25.01.2022 We are asking the big questions at Soho this morning...

22.01.2022 Why waste matters: PART 1: this is a global issue On a global scale, we estimate that food waste currently causes 14% (yep, you heard right!) of the worlds greenhouse gas emissions. In the United Kingdom alone, business are currently generating around 15 Million tonnes annually, 40% of which will go straight to landfill. The methane gas emission from landfill is also now being recognised as far more harmful than Carbon Dioxide as a greenhouse gas.... Governments are finally recognising this a major issue worldwide and have started to implement legislation to combat this waste crisis. Closer to home, in Australia alone, it is estimated that food waste costs our economy $20 billion each year. We throw away 3.1 million tonnes of edible food each year (or 20% of each family grocery shop) with another 2.3 million tonnes being disposed by the commercial and industrial sector. The complexities of dealing with food waste means that an integrated approach is needed. There are also substantial opportunities to rethink how food waste can be prevented, or wasted food can be used for other purposes. Next week we will bring you part two, where we look at what industry is doing to reduce waste, from processing waste to saving edible food for people in need.. Stay tuned.

We do this is many different ways from sponsoring the local football team to partnering with Muru Group. Since 2015 we have been working with a Not-For-Profit called Wear for Success. Wear for Success provides professional clothing and work skills training to help people with the best possible chance of achieving their dreams. Starting in 2...011 this organisation is run by volunteers and since then has helped over 3,800 people needing support on their journey back to work. Their services help a variety of people from long-term unemployed, Indigenous Australians, humanitarian migrants and people with mental health issues, amongst others.
