17.01.2022 Getting to the business end of the cover crop trial. Will any of the cover crops reduce Sclerotinia drop in the lettuce crop? Some lettuce transplants succumbing to Sclerotinia. Lab confirms its Sclerotinia minor. A full assessment of the impact on the different cover crops on disease levels and soil structure will be done as the crop matures. Keep an eye out for a farm walk in mid June.

15.01.2022 Cover crops powering away over the last month. Looks like our plan to terminate in February might be too late for the tillage radish. Seeding = weeding.

14.01.2022 Cover crops are up and away and enjoying Tasmania's early summer.

14.01.2022 A few phone photos that I took at the Soil First cover crop field day at Table Cape this afternoon; Rob Wade's Sly Boss direct drill being given a dry run through some standing, unsprayed cover crop behind a Fendt 720

13.01.2022 Here is a short video on the achievements of the Soil Wealth and Integrated Crop Protection projects over the last three years. https://youtu.be/gkRsEL6O6ZE

11.01.2022 Cover crop mix of tillage radish + oats produced 35 - 60% more biomass than straight sowing of millet, oats or ryegrass in southern Tassie.

10.01.2022 We were asked about the cost of each of the cover crops used in the trial. The table has been updated to include costs of just the seed. All other operations were the same , ie sowing, termination etc. Check out the $/t of cover crop. Between $5 to $20/t dry weight of cover crop biomass delivered and spread. And that doesn't include the roots and other benefits of growing your own!... A pretty cost effective way of adding biomass and feeding your soil bugs.

06.01.2022 Last week we visited the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture demonstration farm in Forthside to take weed biomass and soil samples from the potato crop prior to ...harvest. This is part of a replicated cover crop trial including ryegrass and Caliente, and will be monitored for impact of these two cover crop varieties on weed germination and growth for the next two seasons. Major weeds observed on the site during our recent visit included chickweed, blackberry nightshade, amaranth and mallow. See more

01.01.2022 We will know this patch of soil very well! Soil sampling to measure Sclerotinia sclerotia, soilborne diseases using SARDI's Predicta vegetable panel, Uni Tas will look at soil microbial community and of course we will look at soil properties. Keep an eye out for the results and how cover crops change these.
