20.01.2022 Using electricity to heat water is not only expensive, it also causes a lot of carbon pollution. The power used by your electric hot water system may account for more than a third of your households annual power use, as well as producing thousands of black balloons of carbon pollution. Taking shorter showers is an easy way to use less power. For example, cutting your shower time by three minutes can save $35 per person per year on household power bills. Get the whole family to take shorter showers and the savings will really flow.

14.01.2022 To use less power for your household lighting: * replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs especially in places where you need to keep lights switched on for long periods - like in the living room *use tubular fluorescent lamps in kitchens, garages and workshops limit the use of halogen lights to highlighting decorative features such as a painting on the wall. 11.01.2022 Each year, youll probably spend more than $140 lighting your home and generate around 12,000 black balloons of carbon pollution by using incandescent bulbs. Switching to energy efficient bulbs, such as compact fluorescent light globes (CFLs), can cut your household carbon pollution and power costs by as much as 75 per cent. Compact fluorescent globes produce just as much light as old-style (pear-shaped) incandescent bulbs and are designed to fit standard light sockets (bayon...et and screw fittings) but they cost much less to run. There are even globes suitable for dimmer switch and movement sensors, and downlighting applications. Over its lifetime, one 15-watt CFL does the same job as six 75-watt incandescent globes, consuming just a fraction of the power

08.01.2022 An important tool in choosing an energy efficient washing machine or dishwasher is the energy star rating label. This easy to recognise rating label tells you how much energy an appliance will use in a year, so you can compare different models. The more stars a washing machine is awarded, the better. The highest rating is 6 stars. Washing machines and dishwashers also feature the WELS label (water efficiency labelling scheme), which lets you compare the water efficiency of di...fferent products. A 5 star water efficient washing machine can save up to 100 litres per wash compared to an older style top-loader. That means if you do more than six loads of washing a week, you would save more than 24,000 litres of water a year thats about the same as filling half a good sized backyard pool!

Fitting curtains and blinds that reduce heat loss and trap warmth saves on power bills and reduces our impact on the environment. You can reduce heat loss in winter: * close curtains, blinds or shutters on cold, cloudy days and especially at night this keeps the heat inside your home ... * cover windows with close-fitting, floor-length, heavy curtains. Curtains with pelmets are better at storing heat than Venetian blinds. Tightly fitting Holland or Roman blinds made from closely woven fabrics like a cotton/polyester blend are also effective for reducing heat loss.
