25.01.2022 Do you distinguish your knees as good and bad or are you normal and still refer to them as left and right? Knee pain is quite an umbrella term, meaning that there are several conditions associated with pain around the knee. One that seems to be very common in all ages is Patellofemoral Syndrome, known as Runner's Knee. When your patella (kneecap) is placed in a position not in line with the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone), it doesn't allow your patella to glide smo...othly, potentially leading to irritation, inflammation and eventually degeneration of your knee joint. This isn't your knee's fault. Imagine the knee as a train and the leg as the train track. If you keep looking at fixing the knee and don't pay attention to the "track", you'll only get so far with pain relief. The source of incorrect tracking can stem from either the bottom i.e. your feet and ankles, or the top, which could be your hip muscles. Here are two exercises that demonstrate a simple but effective way to start improving your foot and leg mechanics: Windshield wipers Glute medius activation There are no fixed amount of sets and repetitions here. Start off getting used to each movement, concentrating on the muscles you need to target. Then perform them until you begin to get tired (not sore!). These can easily be performed anywhere, as many days as you can. Try these out and let me know how you go! Also, like this post if you agree I should never dab, ever again hehe

23.01.2022 Ingrown toenails They are the most commonly occurring toenail ailment that occur when the nail curves and grows into the surrounding skin - rather than growing straight up and out of the nail bed. The main causes of ingrown toenails include:... Incorrect nail cutting Ill-fitting footwear Hereditary/Genetics When diagnosed early, ingrown toenails can be treated without any major invasive techniques. But when left untreated, or if you decide to perform a home surgery procedure on yourself (good grief please don't), they can become more painful and infection is more likely to occur. Removal of an ingrown doesn't have to be painful and once treated, you often will feel relief shortly after. We can help treat your ingrown toenail in the safest and most hygenic way - and also help prevent it from becoming an ongoing issue. If you need help with your ingrowns, call us on 0450 604 240 or book online at www.solepurposepodiatry.com.au. We would love to help you out

16.01.2022 What makes a good shoe? Sure enough, a lot of us are guilty of buying shoes that look good, and may also feel good at the time of trying them on in the store. But soon afterwards, they start to cause more harm than good to our feet and end up affecting our ability to do what we would like to. Whether it is for sport, work or even just day to day walking, it is important that you wear the right shoes for the right amount of support for you. ... Some advice for picking your next shoe would be: Check the width and depth of the shoe. This ensures your foot doesn't get squashed and reduces the risk of increased pressure. Make sure the heel counter (back of the shoe) is firm when you push on it with your thumb. This helps keep your foot stable and also stops your shoe from wearing out too quickly. A fastening mechanism - such as laces, straps or a buckle - is almost always preferred as it helps hold the foot in place. Slip on shoes require your foot to work harder to keep the shoe on. This gripping action can lead to deformities like clawed or hammer toes. A Podiatrist can help by assessing your foot and leg mechanics and help you decide what shoes are best fit for you. So if you have any questions, please contact us on 0450 604 240 or visit us on www.solepurposepodiatry.com.au (p.s. this is not my shoe, nor do I have giant feet thank you very much).

07.01.2022 Strength exercises for plantar fasciitis With the warmer weather finally making its return, I think we can collectively agree that we all want to end our Covid bulk phase and get back moving again. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most commonly seen foot injuries seen by Podiatrists. The main reason it occurs is due to the fact that people recommence too much activity too quickly, with not much strength in their feet to begin with. ... The tibialis posterior muscle works together with the plantar fascia with stabilising the arch and preventing excessive pronation (rolling in). The big toe is responsible for activating the intrinsic (smaller and deeper) foot muscles that help provide support the big boss - the plantar fascia. Both exercises shown are simple yet effective exercises to rehabilitate and prevent plantar fasciitis symptoms. You can easily adjust tension in the band to suit your level of strength. Aim for about 15-20 reps per leg. Good luck!
