25.01.2022 EXPLORE Just six kilometres to the south of Norfolk Island lies Phillip Island which is protected by the Norfolk Island National Parks. Phillip Island has an area of 190 hectares (470 acres), measuring 2.1 km (1.3 mi) from west to east and 1.95 km (1.21 mi) from north to south, with the highest point, Jacky Jacky, being 280 m (920 ft) above sea level. In the right light, the island appears in its striking colours; rich reds and purples, subtle y...ellows and greys arched like rainbows through the contours of its imposing form. Some have even dubbed it the "Uluru of the South Pacific" The island is difficult to get to and harder still to climb, but for the thousands of sea birds that regularly visit, Phillip Island is nothing short of an oasis. 22.01.2022 A chain of some 500 islands in the western Pacific, Palau is recognised by divers-in-the-know as one of the best areas to scuba, thanks to three currents converging in its waters, bringing together some of the most varied aquatic life in the ocean. Several of Palaus most popular dive sites are situated around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Rock Islands (445 sheer limestone islands that dot more than 100,000ha of surrounding waters), including Blue Corner..., where feeding sharks, eagle rays and turtles are all part of the underwater show. Wreck-diving enthusiasts will also be sated, as innumerable wrecks litter the sea floor. And while scuba is undoubtedly the main drawcard here, you cant leave without donning snorkel gear and exploring Palaus famed Jellyfish Lake. 09.01.2022 CONSERVATION While the rest of the world ponders over the recent news that a million species globally are facing extinction from human activities, Lord Howe Island is celebrating the success of 40 years protecting its unique species, by removing the last introduced feral mammal pests. Wherever humans have settled islands, they have brought their domestic animals along, and Lord Howe Island is no exception. Early sailors put pigs and goats onto the ...island for food; the settlers brought farm animals and domestic animals- horses, cats, dogs. The worst feral mammal to arrive was the Black rat, that got onto the island in 1918 with an incident involving the cargo ship Makambo. As a visitor you can contribute to the islands conservation by adhering to import rules, and also by cleaning your walking shoes before travelling, and at shoe scrub bays at walking tracks.
