14.01.2022 A bit of a Friday flashback. We’ve always been farmers - this is us in our 20’s with our piggies in the background. So young and filled with ideas and energy. We had just begun our certified organic outdoor piggery, we’re managing 2000 acres with cattle and sheep. Our days were filled with hard work and hard play enjoying the beautiful Severn River in all her beauty. At this time we had dived deep into holistic land management courses, organic farming and soil health and eco...logy. Brilliant times. If I could chat to these two now I would say don’t give up. Droughts end, floods rise and fall and cycles always do the full circuit. The land has always looked after us and it’s pretty much our thing to return the favour. Here we are in 2020 still farming, connected with country and have both chosen this life and it us. 07.01.2022 Avena sativa (milky Oats) Harvest tomorrow of this divine medicine. So wonderful discovering new herbs and their uses! The milk literally pops out of these green seeds when pressed between your fingers, releasing a suite of medicine that settles nerves and are used in tinctures to help manage stress. An abundant first crop of these beauties here on solum, we’ll be drying the oat straw for use in tea blends. ... 04.01.2022 <3 Today is National Ag Day <3 so we thought we'd tell you a story :D Our lives have seen us weave on and off the land and we've always managed to return home to farming. As a young couple we managed a large sheep and cattle property where Mike copped a good hit of chemical poisoning from sheep dip. Here we pivoted into the world of to organic farming (we used to be called the rainbow warriors), soil health and holistic management. It changed our outlook, our lifestyle and h...ow we turned up. Every. Day. We've free-ranged pigs, grown cattle, sheep, chickens, had market gardens, held food events and can now safely say we've nestled into our beautiful farm on Yaegl country where we grow medicinal herbs, licensed hemp, limes, hold workshops and distil our essential oils. This last few years has been a time of transition for us. The drought and fires had us wobbly at the knees. Each time we turned our hands back into the soil and regrouped. Its been a time for slowing down and regathering, defining where we wish to be in what is becoming such a fast paced world. In this world where farming is rightfully gaining momentum and awareness of food systems, source and ecology is growing. As always, Solum follows her own cadence and our favourite permaculture principle of 'Slow Small Solutions'. We know our next year includes community, medicine and regenerative farming. In 2021 we have Agro-ecology weekends and herbal medicine immersions planned alongside building community, building our soil and planting planting planting more on farm. It will be really lovely to have you along with us <3
