24.01.2022 It's not all about getting more work, sometimes you just need to help people. I just meet with a customer who wanted us to build a new website for them. The first question I asked was "Why do you want a new website?" to which they replied that "the form on the contact page wasn't working". I explained to them that this could be fixed easily and cheaply by their web developer. That said "Really"? and I said "Sure, just contact them and explain what the problem is and ask them... to fix it." Whilst this seems pretty obvious to most people, this particular client is elderly and somewhat technically challenged, so it wasn't obvious to them. They thanked me for my time and offered to pay me for the advice, which I declined. Sometimes you just need to help people. Good dead done !

20.01.2022 Google to provide Free Ad credits for Small and Medium-sized Businesses effected by Covid 19 Google have announced that they "want to help small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) stay in touch with their customers during this challenging time. That’s why we’re giving our SMB customers worldwide $340 million in ad credits, which can be used towards future ad spend, until the end of 2020 across our Google Ads platforms." Who is eligible for the ad credit?... Small- and medium-sized businesses globally, who have spent with a Google Ads account in ten out of twelve months of 2019, and in January and/or February of this year. Even if accounts are managed by an account managers, "each of the eligible accounts will receive an ad credit." When will eligible customers receive the ad credit? Starting in late May, we'll begin rolling out the ad credit in phases. Over the following months, eligible customers will be notified and will see the ad credit applied in their Google Ads account. How much are the ad credits? The ad credit amount will vary by customer based on past Google Ads spend, and the country and currency where the business and Google Ads account is set up. So the bottom line is if you are eligible, your account will receive the ad credit in late May and you don't have to do anything to get it. You can find out more about the program here. https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/9803410

06.01.2022 Are you paying Sensis (Yellow Pages) for SEM? Ask for a report so you can see what you are getting for your money. I had a client contact me this week who was paying $400 per month for SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and I asked him what he was getting for that. He said he thought he was paying to "appear" in Google searches. I told him to get a report from Sensis so he could see exactly how many clicks or calls he was getting. When he showed me I was gob smacked.... In 4 months he had received just 22 CLICKS to his website at an average cost of $10 per click, so the total spend was a little bit over $220. What happened to the rest of the $1600? Well they haven't been able to explain that yet BUT suffice to say he is cancelling his contract with them. So if you are spending money with Sensis online, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ask for a report so you can see exactly what you are getting for you money.

04.01.2022 Has your website been hacked YET ? This article published recently claims that around 18.5 Million Websites Infected With Malware at Any Time. Chances are if it hasn't happened to your website yet, it is only a matter of time before it does.... So what can you do about it? Firstly run your site through a Malware Checker like Sucuri https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/ If it comes up with a problem, talk to your web developer quickly and get it fixed. If it looks OK, count your lucky stars and then look at taking some PREVENTATIVE action. You can start by making sure your operating software or CMS (Wordpress, Joomla etc) is up to date as well as all of the plugins. Check that the PHP version is also up to date. Once that is done, make a BACKUP of at least your Database, or if possible, the whole site and continue to do that on a regular basis. Next up check your Analytics and look for anything odd like lots of traffic to your login page. This is definitely from HACKERS TRYING TO HACK YOUR WEBSITE. They will run a password cracking robot on there until they crack it, so we suggest you make sure that you have a good randomly generated password. It is possible to use IP blocking techniques to block IP's of hackers when they try this, but it takes a little bit of know how. Another thing you can do is make sure that your website has an SSL certificate on it. Google doesn't look kindly on websites that do have them these days and users are less likely to interact with sites that don't have them. These will also help protect against hackers. If this all sounds to hard, talk to your web developer or website managers about this. Most of them will offer some sort of Web Management Agreement which covers this. https://solutions4.biz//web-deve/web-site-management-plans Bottom line is if you don't take some action, it is probably only a matter of time before your website gets hacked. https://www.securityweek.com/185-million-websites-infected-

03.01.2022 ARE YOU GETTING YOUR WEBSITE UPDATED? It can be a really exciting time when you get your NEW site designed. Everyone loves the new design, you sign off on it and tell the Web Designers to flick the switch and it goes live. Wohoo ! What happens next? Well what CAN happen is that all of a sudden your site is not coming up in google searches any more, your traffic drops off and you stop getting sales or inquires.... Why? Because your web DESIGNER didn't have a plan to ensure a smooth transition from the old site to the new one. Transitioning from one site to another is the MOST IMPORTANT time in your website's history when it comes to Google. If you get this wrong, you will have 404 error pages popping up all over the place, which is a bad experience for the user and even worse for your SEO. You can even end up with this ! 2 Versions of your website showing in Google https://blackdolphin.com.au/ https://www.blackdolphin.com.au/ The new one looks great but guess what. Traffic has dropped by 66% because Google is penalising BOTH sites because they haven't set up the correct canonicalisation. So what is the lesson? Well if you are getting a new site designed, make sure you talk to someone and see if they have an SEO transitional plan. If they don't talk to someone about it urgently. It is so important to get this right, because if you don't, it can take you months of work to repair the damage and you can lose lots of sales in the mean time.
