24.01.2022 It's going to be a scorcher this weekend on the Coast Here are some helpful hints to keep your pets as cool as Charlie as the temperatures soar - Fresh water and lots of it - Ice cubes in their water ... - Plenty of shade - A pool to swim in (under supervision of course) - Keep them inside in the air conditioning! - No walks or exercising in the heat Some pets are more sensitive to heat than others, this includes brachycephalic cats and dogs (e.g. bulldogs, pugs and Frenchies), long-haired animals, and pocket pets like rabbits and guinea pigs Signs of heat stroke include excessive panting, drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhoea, dullness, lethargy, incoordination and collapse. If you see any of these signs, contact a vet immediately
20.01.2022 Update 31/10 6:30am: ROCKY HAS BEEN FOUND!! Thanks to everyone who shared this post! *** LOST DOG *** Rocky, a black and tan German Shepherd, is missing from Berecry Road, Mangrove Mountain. He went missing this afternoon, potentially after being scared by the storm. ... His family are very worried about him. If you see him, please call Bill on 4374 1604 or 0408 414 073.
18.01.2022 Meet Sophie, a 6-year-old German Shepherd Sophie presented to Somersby Animal Hospital for vomiting white bile. Her owners had originally booked in an appointment in the afternoon but ended up rushing Sophie up in the morning due to Sophie's behaviour. Sophie tried to herd them towards the car and when they opened the door, she jumped in and wouldn't get out. Her owners took this as a sign that she needed to go to the vets now! Well it's lucky they did, because on arriva...l Dr Robin quickly realised just how sick Sophie was. Radiographs were immediately performed and Sophie was diagnosed with a mesenteric torsion (essentially where the intestines become twisted and blood supply is cut off). Sophie was rushed to surgery to correct the torsion and to hopefully save the intestines. Thanks to Sophie convincing her owners to bring her to us so quickly, we were able to save all of her intestines and she is well on the road to recovery If you've got a strong stomach, check out the comments section for a video of poor Sophie's very gas distended intestines
17.01.2022 We're interrupting our regular scheduling of Wildlife Wednesday this week to share Kraken coming in for his check up with Dr Robin Komodo dragons are amazing animals with many fascinating talents. One of these is parthogenesis - i.e. the ability for a female dragon to lay fertile eggs without the assistance of a male Check out the video for some kraken' footage
13.01.2022 Wildlife Wednesday This Feathertail Glider was brought in to us this week after being found wet and unresponsive in a member of public's backyard. There was some concern that a dog may have attacked her, but thankfully on examination we found no injuries and once she was dried and warmed up, she began to act like normal Weighing in at 10-15 grams, Feathertail Gliders are the smallest gliding marsupial in the world. However despite their minute stature, they have been known to glide up to 28 metres in one go!
11.01.2022 Wildlife Wednesday Frilled-neck lizards may be one of Australia's most iconic animals (alongside Skippy and drop bears of course!). These impressive lizards have even sparked the imagination of those in Hollywood, with the Dilophosaurus in the 1993 classic, Jurassic Park, being heavily based on them (despite there being no evidence that these dinosaurs actually had a frill) Frilled-neck lizards also intrigue scientists with the way they run on their two hind legs. ...In 2008, scientists set up a "lizard gymnasium" to help determine why frilled-neck lizards run on two legs and not four. It was determined that bipedal running required more energy than running on four legs, and that it did not offer any speed advantages... In their paper, published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, the scientists stated that maybe the lizards were just "pulling a wheelie" See more
10.01.2022 *** FOUND BIRD *** This little budgie was saved by our nurse, Katrina, after being attacked by a dog on Monday night. She rushed him up to the clinic where Dr Kat performed emergency surgery to save his life. He is one tough little bird and he woke up well from his surgery. He currently has about 2 inches of stitches along his abdomen. He is still in critical condition, but we have our fingers crossed that he will pull through. ... He was found in the Somersby area and we would love to get him home. If you recognise this budgie, please give us a call on 4372 1799

01.01.2022 Meet Jirri, the swamp wallaby Jirri came to see Dr Robin when he was a tiny orphan, after his mother was hit by a car. We performed x-rays and were able to see two broken legs. Dr Robin cast the legs and then Jirri was hand-raised by Katrina and Mark, two amazing carers from Wildlife A.R.C. Check the comments for the x-rays, and enjoy this beautiful video of Jirri's first hops away after being released
