24.01.2022 Mesolimulus are an extinct genus of arthropods. This species of horseshoe crab lived during the Jurassic. They had an extremely unusual form of locomotion that left trace fossils with cross-shaped markings - originally identified as being made by pterosaurs or early species of birds.

24.01.2022 Trace fossils provide evidence of the presence of an organism. These tracks were made way back in the Paleozoic by a trilobite.

15.01.2022 Crinoids (Sea Lillies) are echinoderms. These animals are abundant in the fossil record due to their calcitic skeletons. The calcareous plates that make up the bulk of the animal are created within the body wall, leaving very little living tissue (or fleshy parts). Like all echinoderms, they have a water vascular system to move fluid around their body, diffusing oxygen and collecting cellular waste. This water vascular system also enables them to move. Other echinoderms include star fish, brittle stars, sea urchins and sea cucumbers.

09.01.2022 Calcite is such an interesting crystal. Calcium carbonate- CaCO3, forms the most amazing shapes and formations. It is often found in caves, forming the speleothems, or cave formations like stalactites and stalagmites. It is an important component in cement and is used in the manufacture of fertiliser, metal, glass, paint and rubber.

08.01.2022 In 1988 Kathy Wankel and her family were out boating on Fort Peck reservoir in Montana. They stopped on an island to look around, and Kathy found some bones. She took them to the Museum of the Rockies to be identified. What Kathy had found were the first arm bones of a T rex ever found. Over the coming years, the excavation of the T rex uncovered the biggest and most complete T rex fossil ever found. It has since been surpassed in size and completeness by other specimens, however it is still one of the most complete T rex fossils ever found. I give you...Big Mike

05.01.2022 Temnospondyli were an early group of tetrapods. They evolved in the Early Carboniferous and share a common ancestor with amphibians. This little guy is a Branchiosaurus sp. It sounds a bit like a dinosaur, but Temnospondyli are much older than dinosaurs by over 100 million years!

05.01.2022 Elephant birds laid enormous eggs. They belong to an extinct giant bird family Aepyornithidae from Madagascar. There is evidence from fossil remains that these birds were hunted by humans for food, potentially contributing to their extinction.
