21.01.2022 Nineteen of Katherines leading business, local government and community sector organisations have joined forces, calling for the development of short stay acco...mmodation in Katherine. With extremely high levels of homelessness in Katherine (31 times the national average), a chronic shortage of social and affordable housing, high rates of house crowding, and no appropriate visitor accommodation, the joint statement is calling for immediate action. Short stay visitor accommodation is vital in providing a safe, affordable and appropriate place to stay for those visiting town to access health services, or for cultural, sporting or family reasons. Katherine is the only major regional centre in the NT where such a facility does not already exist or previously been committed to. 16.01.2022 Today Molly and Fran from the Down Syndrome Association of the NT delivered a special gift to Somerville made by the young adults at Project21. During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown the students could not meet in their usual classroom so using Zoom they created the Project21 Virtual Classroom. This kept everyone connected and busy on several projects. One such project involved making bunting in preparation for Territory Day. All the material, needles and thread were delivered to the students houses every week and they got to work cutting and sewing. The Territory Day bunting was then packed into special boxes. Somerville look forward to hanging our bunting in celebration of Territory Day. A huge thankyou to Fran, Molly and all the students from Project21. You have made our day.

12.01.2022 Congratulations to Carolyn Cendo who has been part of the Somerville team for an extraordinary 35 Years! Carolyn joined Somerville in 1985 and worked in childcare before being seconded to an administration role in Somerville’s main office. Carolyn undertook Executive Assistant roles, acted as Administration Manager, worked in purchasing and HR. Over decades Carolyn has been responsible for recruiting more staff than anyone else. Assuming responsibility for managing and supp...orting the casual workforce across disability services to ensure rostering in our houses was consistently maintained. Carolyn has volunteered at hundreds of Somerville events and is a strong advocate for Somerville. Working on Somerville stalls in many locations across Darwin giving freely of her own time. Carolyn has been a great ambassador for Somerville, proud to share the great work that Somerville does in the community.
