23.01.2022 Geez, wasn’t it a juggle to have to play teacher to our children while the schools were shut! Even though my background is in teaching, having my son learning at home and keeping him focused on tasks was one of the biggest challenges ever. Talking to many of you during that time made me realise I wasn't the only one! For many of us, it was a real eye-opener. Did having your child at home provide you with some surprising insights into how they learn? Or rather their struggles ...and crafty avoidance strategies? Did you notice how difficult it was for them to have to sit down and apply themselves? Were you surprised by how challenged they were by the assigned school work? Did you notice some clearly well-practised strategies to do anything but the work in front of them! For some families, forced home learning produced an interesting mix of feelings of frustration and clarity. Frustration at how hard it was to get their child to do the assigned work but also an insight into how difficult it must be for their child to learn in the classroom. If your child struggles with paying attention, listening, following instructions, remembering information and with reading fluently and comprehending its meaning, they are very likely to struggle in a noisy, fast-paced classroom where they are just one of many students. Sonic Learning’s programs are designed for both primary and high school students with these challenges. Let's talk about you and what you'd like to improve - click the link to book a free phone consultation with one of our learning professionals: https://bit.ly/sonicconsult Take care Shahin

22.01.2022 Are neuroscience programs just for kids? No! In fact, we've just started offering a new program especially for adults who would like to improve processing and memory - find out more here: https://soniclearning.com.au//auditory-processing-reading/ Meet Alexandra. She generously shared her experience with us, here's an excerpt:... "It was only as an adult I discovered Auditory Processing difficulties and how these are related to reading and writing skills. I wondered if anyone in Australia worked with these skills and I found Sonic Learning. I saw this was connected with what I had been learning about neuroplasticity about how the brain can change. I feel so keen to share my experience because I believe these can be powerful in helping others take control of their situation. I can’t say I enjoyed school. I have extreme anxiety around making mistakes, even small ones. I think this comes from having to repeat work at school over and over again with no improvement. I remember frequently being in the classroom repeating work while my friends were outside playing. I felt very excluded and I was terrified of people giving up on me, of being abandoned, as a result of making mistakes. I wasn’t sure what to expect with Fast ForWord but I was pleased to find it wasn’t too overwhelming just the processing speed exercise was a bit overwhelming because I really struggled with that one. Fast ForWord is a program that has endless patience. If it sees me struggling it slows down and it doesn't matter how long I need, it will give me that time to grasp the concept I’m being presented with. Doing this program has also given me enough space to become aware of those anxious feelings connected with making mistakes and how important it is for me to encourage and believe in myself. The questions only start when I press the go button, so I'm in control and I hear the next question when I’m ready. This way, I can become aware of my anxiety and slow the whole process down if needed. #neuroplasticity #braintraining #neuroscience #fastforword #capd #apd #auditoryprocessing

20.01.2022 We're excited to announce that we're launching a new program on Monday for little kids aged 3 - 7*! We're especially excited about this program because it's developed by Australians. Hailing from Melbourne, @TALiHealth have developed two groundbreaking programs: 1) TALi DETECT - an attention assessment that you can do with your child in 20 minutes. From Monday you can do this assessment and receive a full report for FREE (you heard right). See where your child's attenti...on skills sit compared to other kids their age - register here: https://soniclearning.typeform.com/to/KVTCo7U2 2) TALi TRAIN - if your child's assessment shows below average results, you can enrol them in this attention training program to improve their attentional skills. Not only are these programs clinically proven and completely unique, they are seriously cute. Click the link in our bio for more information and to sign up for your free attention assessment ... and have a wonderful weekend! * these programs might be appropriate for kids older than 7 if developmentally appropriate - give us a call to discuss. 18.01.2022 I found an old Baci chocolate in the pantry today (almost as good as finding $10 down the side of the couch!) . Usually the little messages inside Baci chocolates are either weird, cheesy or even a bit creepy ... but today I was pleasantly surprised to find something that resonated with me - this little message here (swipe for proof). . Did you know this month is #dyslexiaawarenessmonth ? If someone in your life has Dyslexia, your support (no matter how small) can make a huge... difference. 17.01.2022 This is Shahin, and she's a teacher. But not one of those mean ones (I've been scarred by Mrs Cain from year 3 - I'm sure they don't make teachers like that anymore right?). She's really nice, down to earth, professional and everyone loves her. . Shahin is a teacher and she used to help kids do Fast ForWord programs at school. Now she is helping kids all around Australia do programs at home. . Shahin helps (also makes ) her son do our programs at home. He's been doing th...em since he was little and now he's almost in high school (!!!). The other day his teacher said he was doing so well with his online learning that he decided he deserved a day off school (he didn't get it). . If you have a question about our services, Shahin is one of the professionals here to help you. We offer something quite unique (and we think pretty special) - a free chat with a teacher, OT or speechie so you can talk about your concerns (confidentally of course) and make an informed decision about what you'd like to do next in terms of your own or your child's learning journey. 12.01.2022 Emma Price and @artgalleryofnsw Congratulations Emma on your beautiful blog post interview on the @artgalleryofnsw website. Read the full post here: https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/b/posts/art-is-my-oxygen/ Emma works across many mediums, including mosaics, and her Andy Warhol inspired portrait of mum is very realistic (yep, her mum is a gorgeous human). Swipe to see some of Emma's work.... Acknowledging, nurturing and developing our strengths is so important - both for mental health and for developing a growth mindset. Do you find yourself spending most of your time thinking about how to help your child improve their weaker areas that there's little time left to focus on their strengths? If so, you're not alone - it's a delicate juggling game and both of these things are important. What are your own strengths and what is your child really good at? ----------------------------------- PHOTOS: 1. 11.01.2022 Do you have a teenager who lives with Dyslexia? Sharing success stories like this one can help them learn that we all have strengths, and don't need to define ourselves by our weaknesses. Encourage him or her to ask: what are my strengths? What am I passionate about? How can I develop those strengths?

11.01.2022 The EdTech Awards recognizes people in and around education for outstanding contributions in transforming education through technology to enrich the lives of learners everywhere. This year, Fast ForWord has been named a finalist in the "language learning solution" category.

11.01.2022 Last month Dr Andrew Whitehouse from Clinikids (an Autism Spectrum Disorder research initiative based in Perth) presented a great webinar about the past, present and future of autism research. He highlighted that the last 2-3 decades of autism research were largely focused on the causes of ASD. The overall conclusion is that there are many possible pathways to cause and many are still unknown. In other ways, there is no one thing that causes ASD, rather there are many factors... that interact and overlap. There will never be a single "thing" that we can do to prevent or change the causal pathway. He then went on to point out that this is a good thing, because understanding that the causes are complex has caused researchers to be able to now focus on the individual rather than the process that got them to this point. This really spoke to us because we talk with people who have learning difficulties (and their parents and loved ones) every day, and they do not want to be defined by their diagnosis. While a diagnosis might be helpful when applying for funding or gaining a very basic understanding of the challenges involved in a person's life, it doesn't change who they are and it doesn't tell you who this wonderful person is and what their individual strengths and challenges are. So the takeaway...research is there to help us understand, explain and help. But the most important part is to move forward with the helping!

07.01.2022 It might seem like a harmless statement, but a recent conversation with an adult who experienced auditory processing difficulties her whole life, and still suffers from the lack of understanding and compassion shown to her during her younger years, reminded me that seemingly harmless statements can have a lifelong effect. Kids listen to what we say about them and these things contribute to their perception of themself as a learner - and a person. I can't count the number of t...imes I've heard parents say their children often describe themselves as "dumb". Children (and adults) with auditory processing disorder don't choose to have poor listening skills. They just have trouble processing what they hear so they zone out. It’s a problem in the classroom, since most classroom instruction is verbal. Auditory processing (listening) problems aren’t related to IQ, and students do not grow out of it. A supportive adult can make a HUGE difference to these kids. That's you! Learn more about APD and download a free info pack here: https://soniclearning.com.au//what-is-auditory-processing/

07.01.2022 Meet our newest speech pathologist, Simone! We took this picture in May 2020 when Simone started at Sonic Learning (hence the jumper and scarf!). 06.01.2022 Claire sent me these pictures from the weekend when she took the kids to a place here in Perth called the "Secret Garden". It made me remember two interesting things I'd learned about the brain, and why getting outside is so important. 1. Exercise causes neurogenesis - the birth of new neurons. I remember hearing this in the very first online lecture I've ever attended, which was 14 years ago now (did we even have the internet then?). Back then it was a brand new discovery,... and now there's quite a body of research. So just think about that next time you go for a walk - you're growing NEW BRAIN CELLS! 2. When we stop to enjoy nature, our mental performance improves. I remember reading an interesting article in National Geographic a few years ago called "This is Your Brain on Nature". It describes something called the "3 day effect" - their study participants performed 50 percent better on creative problem-solving tasks after three days of wilderness backpacking. Hoping you can find a nice place to clear your mind and get some fresh air on this lovely day. xx Tina

01.01.2022 This photo looks like a stock photo, but believe it or not, it's a real one sent in by Jamie and his mum Clare! Aren't they gorgeous? Jamie enrolled in our Fast ForWord processing training program last year because, although he is incredibly bright, he had trouble listening and paying attention in class. As adults, if we aren't good at something (for me it's sports) - we'll avoid that activity at all costs. For a child who isn't good at listening, who has to sit and listen al...l day, persisting in the classroom is difficult. More often than not these kids become disruptive or act out and are labelled "the class clown". Jamie's mum Claire read about Fast ForWord in the book, "The Brain That Changes Itself" by Dr Norman Doidge (if you'd like a sample chapter just DM us your email address and we'll send it through to you). "I knew we had to find this program," said Clare. Jamie worked hard and with his family's support, completed a 3 month course of Fast ForWord training working on his listening, processing, attention, memory, reading and language skills. He also returns regularly during the holidays to train on our Reading Boost program. At Sonic Learning we are committed to providing high quality evidence based programs for people who would like to improve essential skills like auditory processing, memory, attention, language, reading, spelling, following instructions, and social skills. If you'd like more information we'd be happy to send you an info pack - just send us a message or fill out the contact form on our website. https://soniclearning.com.au/jamies-phenomenal-turn-around/
