25.01.2022 Facebook Case #131 Brought to you by CFEH Education http://learningforvision.com.au/... A 22 year old female presented for a macular assessment. Her acuities were 6/6 in each eye with no distortion on Amsler grid and an unremarkable ocular and medical history. Both eyes had a similar appearance, so only the right eye is shown here. What would be the most likely diagnosis for this patient? For the answer go to https://www.centreforeyehealth.com.au/facebook-cases/

21.01.2022 A recent article in Choice on what to consider when buying prescription glasses, failed to mention the importance of having a comprehensive eye examination with an optometrist. We have formally responded to Choice asking them to redress this oversight and to correct the article.

19.01.2022 Tomorrow evening CFEH Lead Glaucoma Clinician, Jack Phu, is hosting the Learning for Vision February live webinar. Join us at 6.30pm for his discussion on The... ABCs or Atypical Disc Shapes and Sizes. The optic nerve is one of the most prominent features seen on posterior eye examination. However, disc sizes and shapes that deviate from a typical appearance may confound assessment. This talk will provide a refresher on the anatomy of the optic nerve and a show a spectrum of atypical disc appearances that may range from the congenital or benign, to the sinister and pathological. The webinar is worth 3 face-to-face therapeutic points. If you are interested in attending this webinar or any of our future ones held each month, visit www.learningforvision.com.au

14.01.2022 In Australia, while 'Flora Plant Dairy Free Buttery' is indeed a mouthful, the ingredients are anything but mouthwatering... Vegetable oil, water, salt, emulsif...ier (sunflower lecithin), buttery flavours, vitamins A, D, colour (beta carotene). #butteryflavours ?@$#!? 'Flora Plant Butter' is 79% fat... and a perfect example of tweaking a product to fit the 'plant-biased' narrative. Interestingly, butter isn't a legally protected term in the US unlike the UK, where 'Flora Plant Bvtter' is spelled with an ambiguous leafy 'v' as a "creative and cynical attempt to circumvent consumer law?" suggested someone on Twitter. BTW, the legal definition of margarine sets it at 80% fat or above, so it appears Flora have deliberately set the fat content slightly under 80%, meaning retailers can't place the word 'margarine' on the display or pricing label. Marketing departments know that 'margarine' has become a dirty word amongst their consumers... So, they fixed it! 11.01.2022 [Latest update on Stage 4 restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne] - 6 August 10 am We have received updated advice from the Victorian Government this mornin...g (6 August 10 am) regarding permitted workplaces during Stage 4 restrictions https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au//Permitted%20Work%20Premises%2 This advice has confirmed that optometrists can continue to ‘provide services that prevent a significant change/deterioration in functional independence necessitating escalation of care (e.g. a requirement for specialist input/review, an increase in care needs and/or alternate accommodation, avoiding a hospital admission or emergency department presentation).’ This means that optometrists can provide urgent care and care that is necessary at this time to prevent deterioration of an established condition. We advise you to: use your clinical judgement in determining what face-to-face care is appropriate to provide postpone face-to-face services where doing so is unlikely to pose a risk to the patient’s eye health OR impact the patient's ability to function (work, drive etc) utilise telehealth wherever possible https://www.optometry.org.au//covid-19-clinica/telehealth/ cease routine recalls of patients and provision of routine care during this period The requirement for a medical referral for patients to access optometry care during Stage 4 restrictions has now been removed. For those practices remaining open it is important to ensure you and your staff have the required work permits for travel https://www.justice.vic.gov.au/permitted-worker-scheme. If you are self employed current advice is to sign both sides and print and take your AHPRA registration certificate with you. Practices also need a COVID-safe plan https://www.business.vic.gov.au//creating-a-covid-safe-wor. A template pre-loaded with useful information has been uploaded to our website here https://www.optometry.org.au//covid-safe-plan-template-fo/ We will provide further updates on issues that are not yet clear, such as whether practitioners can work across multiple sites, when this becomes available. For further COVID-19 clarification or advice, please don’t hesitate to contact the Optometry Victoria South Australia office via 03 9652 9100 and [email protected] or Optometry Australia's Optometry Advisor Helpdesk on 03 9668 8500 or at [email protected] (cc Optometry Victoria South Australia)
