10.01.2022 MEET THE SMDS TEAM! Soraya McKee Owner and Operator of SMDS, Jazz and Street Tap Instructor and Choreographer Okay...it’s time to introduce myself!... I am entering my 13th year of dance teaching, and I am experienced in teaching Jazz, both Broadway & Street Tap, Acrobatics, Musical Theatre, Contemporary & Lyrical styles. I have various qualifications through Australian Teachers of Dancing, Dance Factory & Acrobatics Association of Australia. My ‘speciality’ is Commercial Jazz & modern/street Tap & I pride myself on choreographing routines that leave the audience guessing! Outside of the dance school setting, I have run dance workshops for the local community, provided creative direction for tourist attractions such as Sovereign Hill, and choreographed local school concerts and fundraising events. In 2020, prior to the COVID 19 pandemic hitting its peak, I worked as Choreographer for the Loreto College & St. Patrick’s College production of ‘Matilda - The Musical’. Although this was cancelled, the experience gave me a new skill set that I cannot wait to put in practice again! Over the past 9 years I have competed with soloists, duos and troupes while working with other dance schools and have loved seeing the confidence and skill improvement build in my students each time they step out on stage. My biggest achievements in this area so far are winning the Millie Swandale Memorial Trophy at Bendigo Dance Eisteddfod 2 years in a row in both 2018 and 2019 and the Robyn Pascoe Memorial award at Royal South Street in 2019. In my career I have also attended a wide number of masterclasses and choreography work-shops to further my skills, and been mentored by some of the industries finest such as Darren Disney (Tap Dogs original founder), Mia Michaels (SYTYCD USA, internationally renowned choreographer), Tovaris Wilson (Broadway Dance Centre NYC, SYTYCD USA), Marco Panzic (The Dream Dance Company) and Demi Sorono (SYTYCD AU) to name a few. My vision in starting Soraya McKee Dance Society is to create a dance experience for students that is positive, inclusive and welcoming! So enrol with me today! Email, call or see the link in our bio!
