24.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who joined the ANZAC Day commemoration to light up the dawn from our homes as we remember all those from the Sorell district who served and the contributions made in war time and in many other ways. Lest we forget. #lightupthedawn #lestweforget #stayhomesavelives... http://sorellhistory.org/sorell-remembers-1914-1919/

22.01.2022 Yesterday long serving SHS member and advisor, Peter MacFie, was presented with the University of Tasmania's special Distinguished Service Award and Medal for his contribution to history. Congratulations and well done Peter! Professor Kate Darian Smith, Executive and Pro-Vice Chancellor, College of Arts, Law and Education, University of Tasmania presented the awards to Peter via FaceTime video link.... Peter has several articles in Pitt Water Chronicles Vol 1 and Vol 2 and many members will have participated in history walks, concerts and other history themed events with Peter over the years.

18.01.2022 How wonderful to hear music from Sorell’s early colonial days. You can learn more about Alexander Laing (17921868) in our Pitt Water Chronicles journals Vol 1 & 2 and we also sell ‘On the Fiddle’ (2010), a compilation of Laing’s tunes co-written by Steve & Marjorie Gadd and Peter MacFie.
14.01.2022 A community meeting at Forcett Community Hall today discussed the history of the Forcett Cemetery, the background to the Anglican Diocese proposal to sell to a local funeral business as cemetery manager and options for more directly involving the community in the change. Forcett Cemetery in Quarry Rd was established on land gifted to the people of the district and administered by volunteers. Carole Dodge and her late husband Darryl managed the cemetery for around 40 years. In 1982 the land title was transferred to the Anglican Church and in recent years the Sorell Parish has managed the cemetery plots, maintenance and burials.
11.01.2022 A fabulous example of how maps and charts can tell us so much about the past.
10.01.2022 According to Google maps, driving from Launceston to Dunalley today takes two hours 40 minutes., a long drive today but a longer and more difficult trip in 1937... when Robert Tanner and his family undertook that journey to visit the Spaulding family. Join us to hear Robert tell the story of that journey at our regular free monthly public talk on Tuesday 20 August 2019 at 7:30pm. The venue is the Sunday School at St Johns Park, New Town. Find it by turning off Main Road, New Town, into St Johns Avenue, left at the end, then first to the right. The talk is based on a story to appear in the next edition of the Pitt Water Chronicles, a series of publications from the Historical Society of Sorell Inc. All are welcome. No charge. Join us and the speaker for a cuppa after the talk. For more information about the Pitt Water Chronicles go to [http://sorellhistory.org/pitt-water-chronicles/].
