24.01.2022 After winning the British Open for the fifth time in 1965, long-time Sorrento Golf Club member Peter Thomson (pictured below at the event) who was the only man to win the UK tournament for three consecutive years in the 20th century - allowed his son, Andrew, to take the famous 'claret jug' trophy to school for ‘show-and-tell’. However, the artifact, hallmarked 1873, was not enough to impress, as one of the other boys proceeded to insult Andrew by telling him his own father... had a trophy that was better. Forty years later, in 2005 during pre-qualifications for the British Open at Kingston Heath, Thomson told the story of how the world’s most famous golfing trophy had ridden on Melbourne’s public transport system in the bag of a schoolboy. The officials of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, who traveled everywhere with the trophy and never let it out of their sight, didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. #MondayMemories #sorrentogolfclub

14.01.2022 One of the six attendees of the first meeting of the Sorrento Golf Club in 1907, was Cr David Macfarlan from the Shire Council. He bought the general store in the main street (Stringer's) as well as the Athenaeum Theatre and was largely responsible for the development of the Sorrento main street as a successful social and shopping precinct. It was upon his instigation that electricity and the water reticulation scheme were brought to Sorrento. By the time the Sorrento Golf C...lub had acquired a purpose-built clubhouse in 1912, the town had a total of six telephones. The numbers were listed in the local paper as follows: 1 - Continental 2 - Allan, JD 3 - Smith, H.B.H. 4 - Smith, W.S.H. 5 - Goodall, John 6 - Lombard, J #sorrentogolfclub #mondaymemories

12.01.2022 A men's team recently played another traditional interclub match in the Gang Cup versus Kingston Heath. Our team was very proud to be able to record a win at Kingston Heath. It was one of the few times in the event’s long history that Sorrento has achieved this feat. The origins of the Gang Cup are noteworthy. In 1984, Sorrento's Geoff Brash phoned Kingston Heath’s Bruce Williams, seeking assistance. Sorrento's mower had been left overnight on the seventh tee and vandals ent...ered the course, releasing the brake and pushing it down the hill. The damage was beyond repair and a replacement was urgently needed. Kingston Heath had recently upgraded its mowers and therefore was in a position to loan Sorrento a spare gang mower. In appreciation, Brash suggested to Williams that a competition be played between the committees of both clubs on an annual basis for the Gang Cup. A lot has changed at Sorrento since 1984. We have so much good equipment now that if anything ever breaks down at Kingston Heath, we could loan them anything they could ever want! #mondaymemories #sorrentogolfclub

09.01.2022 In 1943, six locals, together with six city men decided to incorporate a golf match with a card-playing event. Hosted by Fred Matear, who owned the Hotel Australia as well as ‘Ilyuka’, the beautiful Spanish mansion at Sorrento, the game would become known as ‘The Ilyuka Cup’. It has been played every year since by descendants of the original players. At lunch before the game, bread rolls would be broken open to reveal a golf ball inside, which had been baked into the bread a...t the kitchen of the Hotel Australia. A main course of crayfish and cocktails would follow. After another round of drinks, the game would commence around 4pm, with only 12 holes being played and the winner shouting drinks at the bar afterwards. A poker game would then commence, carrying on until the small hours of the morning. Among the locals was Harold Holt (then Federal Treasurer and future Prime Minister). Holt was described as the worst golfer in the world, although he did once win the Ilyuka Cup. One member remembers, This was probably because he was a better drinker than the rest of the field. #MondayMemories #SorrentoGolfClub

08.01.2022 Last week, Sorrento Golf Club GM Andrew Davis wrote a reminder to members, warning them of the warm weather bringing snakes onto the course. But reptiles aren't the only creatures to interfere with a game in the past at the Club. Shortly after joining the club in 2002, Terry Campbell was playing in a foursome and as the game commenced, all players hit good drives. They then watched in amazement as two foxes walked onto the fairway and picked up a ball each. Campbell’s ball was dropped into the fairway bunker and the other abandoned in the rough. More recently, a brand new ball was found on the third fairway with teeth marks in it. Do you have a story or picture to share of animals on our course? 03.01.2022 This month marks a momentous occasion for the game, as it was in October 1764 that the Society of St Andrews Golfers (now the Royal and Ancient Golf Club) decided that the Old Course should be reduced from 22 holes to 18. On the 3rd of October, twelve golfers had played in the Challenge for the Silver Club led by Captain William St Clair of Roslyn. The next day they decided that the Old Course should be reduced from 22 holes to 18. The Old Course thus became the first 18 ho...le course on the 4th of October 1764. In a revision of the Rules of Golf by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club in 1842, the concept of 18 holes as a round of golf was enshrined in Rule One, which read: ‘One round of the Links, or 18 holes, is reckoned a match, unless otherwise stipulated’ #mondaymemories #sorrentogolfclub #royalandancient #golf #golfhistory
