25.01.2022 What were you thinking Subway?! This is a speech sound error not a marketing ploy!!

25.01.2022 Its Speech Pathology Australia week! 1.2 million Australians live with a communication disability that impacts on their daily life. Communication disability is invisible to most Australians. Unseen and out-of-sight. Ive attached some flyers from Speech Pathology Australia shedding light on this issue. https://www.speechpathologyaustralia.org.au//Speech_Pathol

25.01.2022 This is a great, clear explanation of what's going wrong with our current literacy system. Let's spread the word and set our children up to succeed and enjoy learning to spell, read and write. Thanks Alison!

24.01.2022 WOW, there goes the first term of the year! It can't be easter break already April is 'WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS' month. At SOS Therapy & Learning Centre, we understand that EVERYbody is different and that they should show their quirks in every way possible. Our approach to therapy and learning, supports these differences and allows our clients and their families to learn in a safe, welcoming and flexible environment. We love our clients with Autism and the way in which they are constantly teaching us how to see the world differently. Never hide your differences; they make you who you are and that is a pretty AMAZING person. -Hannah Graham, Senior SP

23.01.2022 Parents often don't realise that communication is much more than words. Before our children are ready to communicate verbally, they need to understand how conversations work and the skills required for social communication. It's important to get down to your child's level, chat and interact with them in a play-based environment to develop these skills, ready for their first words. This is just one of the great FREE videos/articles from The Hanen Centre.

23.01.2022 Today is International Stuttering Awareness Day. Stuttering affects 1% of the world population, so around 75 million people. This is a video from speech pathologists around the world who’d like to share some important facts about stuttering. Importantly, SOS Therapy and Learning Centre would like you to know that studies now show many children will not just grow out of stuttering so, please don’t wait and see. We can treat children’s stuttering and early intervention is key. Clare Catmore, Principal Speech Pathologist. https://speakeasy.org.au//important-facts-about-stuttering/

22.01.2022 The delayed after effect- our client's parents would know it so well! It is important to discuss this with your child's teacher to help them to understand how to support this child more efficiently throughout the school day. If this sounds like your child, here are some simple and handy tips to start with: - Ask the teacher to set aside consistent movement breaks throughout the day. These MUST be a break from sustained auditory and visual attention. Some examples are: sen...d the child with a message to the front office, go and splash water on their face, fill up the teacher's water bottle. - Ask the teacher to allow your child to have some downtime for the last 10 minutes of the school day e.g. we recommend more relaxing tasks such as iPad time, lego, colouring in. - When your child gets home from school, allow them time to transition back into the household by giving them 20-30 minutes of quiet, alone time. Try not to ask them how their day has been until they have had a chance to regulate into their environment. Get in contact today if you want to know more!

22.01.2022 Another great free resource! Very visually friendly and phonics driven :)

20.01.2022 SOS Therapy and Learning Centre take the safety of our clients, client families and our speech pathologists seriously. We have been seeing clients using Telehealth and will continue to do this as long as necessary. As restrictions in Western Australia ease and clients return to therapy sessions at the Centre following the procedures in our infographic will be more important than ever. Stay safe everyone and stop the spread, Clare Catmore, Principal Speech Pathologist #covid19 #coronavirus #stopthespread #staysafe #speechpathology #sostherapylearningcentre

18.01.2022 A powerful group of examples of the amazing outcomes from people with Dyslexia. At SOS Therapy & Learning Centre, we encourage our clients to harness both their strengths and weaknesses in order to learn and build from. A perfect reminder not to let your difficulties or comments from others stop you from achieving your goal!

16.01.2022 We love a free resource- especially when it's a decodable reader created by the gold standard of literacy programs 'Sounds Write'. Enjoy!

16.01.2022 A great little clip shared by Phonics Books LTD. We were shown this at our 'Sounds Write' training by Dyslexia SPELD Foundation to demonstrate the importance of teaching children according to spelling patterns. This allows children to understand the flexibility and thorough understanding we need to write in our very complex English language without all the complicated rules and exceptions. e.g. spellings of /or/= or, aw, a, ar, au, al, ought, augh, our, ore, oar 'Sounds Write' teaches these in different stages starting with our higher frequency spellings and later introducing more complex, lower frequency spellings; all taught through explicit, multi-sensory instruction.

14.01.2022 Happy Friday everyone

13.01.2022 Absolutely love this quote- so very true! So often we punish children for fidgeting, rocking on their chairs, distracting others or engaging for a reaction. We just ask you to firstly, stop and think to yourself, 'what is my child seeking through this behaviour?' Think about what your child is missing or craving to solve the root of the behaviour rather than punishing them for what is usually a natural reaction.

13.01.2022 Five From Five is a fantastic website with contributions from experts in the field of literacy. Ive no doubt these resources will be high quality and extremely helpful. Clare Catmore, Principal Speech Pathologist.

12.01.2022 Hahaha I clearly have good taste. The Worst Alphabet Book with P is for Pterodactyl on the cover is a best seller. Now I covet this book! Hilarious

10.01.2022 The SOS Therapy and Learning Centre team at the Ask a Speech Pathologist stall at St Josephs School Queens Parks Family Fun Night. The balloons didnt fair too well in the wind! It was great to see so many families in attendance and a good night was had by all. Clare, Hannah and Annabel, the SOS speech pathologists and mud pie specialists!

10.01.2022 Book sharing is a great tool to use for children of all ages! Book Sharing is not only a great opportunity to bond with your child and improve their literacy skills, but is also effective in exploring story elements, and developing skills of problem-solving and reasoning. Take the time to explore before, during and after reading, to help build you child's word and world knowledge ;)

09.01.2022 A Friday morning funny! I can relate to this as both a mother to a child with a specific learning disorder and as a speech pathologist. Have a fabulous Friday and an excellent weekend Clare Catmore Principal Speech Pathologist.

09.01.2022 Hahaha! I really want this book!

06.01.2022 At SOS Therapy & Learning Centre, we use the UK Phonics Book Series to compliment our evidence-based, synthetic phonics spelling programs such as Sounds Write. Follow their page for some great tips and tricks, and now some free templates to help support the process of decoding at home :)

05.01.2022 At SOS Therapy & Learning Centre, we follow the Dyslexia SPELD Foundation's gold standard for both the assessment and treatment of language and literacy skills. 'Sounds Write' is just one of the fantastic synthetic phonics programs we can offer to help support your child's literacy development. Luckily for our parents, they also offer a free online training: https://www.udemy.com/help-your-child-to-read-and-write/ If you'd like to know more about any of our programs or how we can help your struggling child, then feel free to get in contact for more information.

03.01.2022 This is a great post about the importance of dictation as part of an evidenced based approach to learning literacy. We use dictation as part of our Sounds~Write lessons. I giggled at the title, Doing dictation doesnt make you a dictator, at least not if youre doing it right!

02.01.2022 As the school year nears to a close, we just want to thank and commend all our amazing families for making it through the 2019 school year! A lot of our kids may not have achieved an award for being the most outstanding in an area, but seeing the small achievements and improvements, as well as watching them persevere through the tough times, is what makes coming to work as a Speech Pathologist easy

02.01.2022 This is very positive news! SOS Therapy and Learning Centre uses evidence based resources to explicitly teach children structured synthetic phonics in order to read. We have sets of the Little Learners Love Literacy readers mentioned in the article. We do not advocate encouraging children to memorise lists of words visually or reading strategies such as look at the picture to help you figure out what the word might be, to guess words. We hope WA schools follow this lead and use decodable phonics based readers. Clare Catmore, Principal Speech Pathologist.
