25.01.2022 We are back to zoom sessions at Sound Bites, but don’t worry, Rhianna and Elsie have been setting up a green screen so that they can have virtual backgrounds to keep your child entertained (while they sneakily work on their communication or literacy goals ).

24.01.2022 Please bring a mask to wear when you come to the clinic for your child’s speech session. You will also be asked to ‘check in’ via the QR code we have by the door. Thanks everyone for your understanding with this.

23.01.2022 Sound Bites library talks were a big success. We talked through some tips to get the most out of books for language and literacy development. Thanks to Holdfast and St Peter’s libraries for facilitating the presentations. #literacy #speechpathologyaustralia #speechpathologyaustraliabookawards #speech

23.01.2022 Did you know that there are two main types of speech errors? You may hear the terms ‘articulation’ or ‘phonological’ delay/disorder: Children with articulation difficulties have problems using their articulators (tongue, lips, teeth) to make a particular sound. This is often seen in children with lisps. In phonological errors, children are able to produce a sound correctly, but will often use it the wrong position, the wrong word or substitute it with another sound, e.g. sayi...ng ‘doe’ instead of ‘go.’ Charles Sturt University have provided this useful graphic of when children (including bilingual children) will start using English consonant sounds: https://cdn.csu.edu.au//pdf_/0019/3119104/Treehouse-A4.pdf #speechsounds #phonologicaldisorders #articulation #phonologicalprocesses

21.01.2022 Wonderful news that Zack has been granted a wish through ’Make a Wish Foundation’ to see salt water crocodiles in the wild. Zack and his family deserve this special time together. Rhianna feels very lucky to work with them every week and enjoys seeing Zack’s beaming smile https://www.makeawish.org.au/wishes/wish-stories/zackl

03.01.2022 No matter your child’s age, preparing them for a COVID-19 test will help make the experience a little easier for them. . Here are a few tips on how to prepare ...your child: Paint a picture for them: describe in age appropriate detail what they can expect before you head out. This should include where they will go, who will be there, what they will see and how long it will take. Let them know that friendly staff will be wearing masks, caps, gowns and gloves to protect themselves and others from getting sick. Keep them distracted during the wait with their favourite toy, books, music, or a movie/TV show on your phone or tablet. Explain that they’ll put a little stick with a soft end in their nose and mouth, and that it won’t hurt but might feel funny. Plan a fun ‘reward’ that they will get at home after the test (your child will need to self-isolate until they’ve received a negative test result and their symptoms have resolved). . If your child doesn’t like being touched or gets scared in clinical settings, please let the staff know and they’ll work out a way to keep your child feel calm and comforted. See more
