22.01.2022 Things to keep in mind this #DeafAwarenessMonth

22.01.2022 "We didn't know what he wanted, and he was trying to speak to us to show us that he wanted something... but we couldn't understand" In March, Tjandamurra was given a life-changing bone conduction hearing aid and was able to hear clearly for the first time.

22.01.2022 We have been enchanted by Soundfair's socials this week. With different voices of people who are deaf and hard of hearing, it's worth jumping over to their page to discover the stories and experiences of some pretty special people.

21.01.2022 In light of International Week of the Deaf, we wanted to share our updated poster on the key roles and responsibilities of a teacher of the deaf, which now includes a section for you to fill out details of the Teacher of the Deaf at your school and how they can be contacted. If you would like a free PDF copy of our poster to print and share please drop us an email at [email protected]

21.01.2022 Alicia (left) and Brie-Elle (right) from our testing team visit primary and secondary schools across Sydney to run the Sound Scouts hearing screening program. The aim of our in-school screening program is to introduce the app to schools so they can run their own screening. Alicia and Brie-Elle work very hard to ensure testing runs smoothly!

21.01.2022 Your child may be missing social cues or trying to compensate for not being able to hear properly but they have been mistakenly labelled as being difficult or going through a 'naughty phase'. If your child has glue ear, it can be particularly problematic if it coincides with them starting school or kindy, as it can impact their speech and language development and hamper their ability to learn and socialise at this crucial period in their lives. Some of the symptoms of glue ea...r are common to other conditions, so it isn’t always easy to tell whether your child might have glue ear or something else. To learn more about Glue Ear in children and how you can screen your child's hearing to identify potential issues, click here: https://www.soundscouts.com//hearing_hea/what_is_glue_ear/

20.01.2022 As #InternationalWeekoftheDeaf comes to a close, we wanted to share a very special someone's story. Aidan is cheeky and bubbly. He was 10 years old when his hearing loss was identified, but he now takes pride in how, at the time, he was "the only one in his year with a hearing aid". We were lucky to chat with Aidan last year about his hearing loss diagnosis, and what it's like for him now in the classroom and playground with the support of hearing technology.... Read Aidan's story here: https://www.soundscouts.com//aidan-s-story-i-can-hear-the/ -- Disclaimer: While Sound Scouts supports the use of both technology and sign language as a tool to enhance communication, we acknowledge that this may not be all parents' preference for their child. Every deaf person and family has their own experiences and choices for how they wish to support their child's deafness. Music: www.bensound.com

20.01.2022 "Growing up as a deaf person I missed out on opportunities due to lack of access, and this included understanding and appreciating art" Sue is now an Artist Educator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, leads Auslan tours at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, founded the Sydney Deaf & Hard of Hearing Photographers (SDHP), and even worked as an Auslan consultant on The Voice Australia.

19.01.2022 R u OK day is a day to check-in and continue the conversation with your loved ones. Hearing loss can be challenging during these times. It can be isolating, especially during times of social distancing, mask-wearing, and lockdowns. Reach out to your deaf and hard of hearing loved ones this R u OK day. #RUOK #RuOkDay

18.01.2022 "Because a hearing loss could occur at any age and often progresses unnoticed, adding a regular hearing check to the to-do list was vital." Sound Scouts is a great tool to regularly check yours and your family's hearing as it's free (in Australia) and you can do it in the comfort of your own home in 8 minutes.

18.01.2022 Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children's Auslan Tutor app is free from 21st to 27th of September 2020!

18.01.2022 "Choose to embrace your implants & your deafness. They are what set you apart & make you unique. You were made to stand out. You were designed with a strong little spirit, meant to shine bright. Don't ever try to hide it." Such a beautiful message from Tessa to her bub. As you can see, Tessa and her gorgeous son both have hearing loss. You can follow their journey together on her Instagram page.

16.01.2022 Did you know, emergency sirens need to be 'omni-directional' so that sound travels from all directions of the emergency vehicle. These sirens, such as those you hear from police cars, fire engines, or ambulances have been designed to contain a range of frequencies to support people who have a frequency-specific hearing loss. Try listening for the different frequencies next time an emergency vehicle flies by. This post was inspired by the Canberra Times 'Ask Fuzzy' segment 'Why is it hard to locate the direction of an ambulance siren?'

16.01.2022 Are you doing something remarkable? Solving a problem that will improve inclusivity and accessibility? If the answer is YES considering applying for the #SYD21 REMARKABLE Accelerator Program. Accelerate your success!

16.01.2022 Mila, FREEZE! This was just too important not to share. So many parents tell us that one of their biggest fears when it comes to their child's hearing loss is their child not being able to hear when a car or bus comes past. Though hearing technology does not 'totally restore' hearing, it can make a big difference in your child's ability to hear the more important sounds like passing vehicles - and it can also help them hear some of the more beautiful sounds in life, such as birds chirping and the pitter-patter of rain.

09.01.2022 Do you know the different terms used within the deaf community? If you are unsure of how someone identifies within the deaf community, simply ask! Most people are happy to tell you which terms they use to describe their deafness or hearing loss, and why.

08.01.2022 The superpower that comes with cochlear implants - the ability to switch them on and off. "Mrs Goodfellow, 48, can read the newspaper in total silence, sleep through storms, and always has the last word in an argument with her husband."

07.01.2022 "Each painting I do, I try to tell the story about how solo or groups of sea creatures can cope while alone and away from the world," Mr Formosa said. "This is similar to the way I face the world every day with my limited sight and total deafness." #InternationalWeekoftheDeaf

07.01.2022 Wonderful to share information about the Sound Scouts hearing check app with the NSW Department of Education, Rural North, Itinerant Support Teacher Conductive Hearing Loss Team. Thanks for your incredible work supporting NSW's students!

07.01.2022 Our #ScientificSunday today is "Hearing tests are just child’s play: the Sound Scouts game for children entering school" (2018). The science of Sound Scouts has been published in the International Journal of Audiology. Watch to find out more. [Video copy]... What does the article mention? The objective to create a hearing test for children that can be used without the involvement of a clinician or calibrated equipment. The app includes a test of speech in quiet, speech in noise and tone in noise, all embedded in a game designed to maintain attention. Data was collected to equalise the stimuli and evaluate the sensitivity and normative performance with which the Sound Scouts app detected known hearing problems and identified the type of hearing problem. The Results - 98% of children with normal hearing passed Sound Scouts - 85% of children with hearing loss failed Sound Scouts (however many improvements have been made since this study) - No child with four-frequency average hearing thresholds of 30dB hearing loss or greater in their poorer ear passed Sound Scouts What’s the verdict? Sound Scouts has the specificity and sensitivity sufficiently high to provide hearing screening around the time children typically enter school.

02.01.2022 Did you know that this month marks Sound Scouts' 10th Anniversary! 10 years ago, our Founder, Carolyn, first came up with the idea of a hearing check designed as a game. A course in digital media introduced Carolyn to the concept of serious games. A serious game, or ‘applied game’, is a game designed for a primary purpose other than pure entertainment. Carolyn's idea of a hearing check in the form of a serious game, came from her experience as a mother, recognising the challenges faced by parents in getting their children's hearing checked.
