25.01.2022 We are looking at the aspargus growing industry today - this is Naida Rose and Jennie Schouewille picking asparagus at Roxburgh's farm at Vervale in 1942. They were both Land Army Girls and this photo and others appeared in The Australasian November 21, 1942. I have written about Roxburgs here https://kooweerupswamphistory.blogspot.com//thomas-roxburg State Library of Victoria Image H98.105/673

Was it nice on the water? Just where the cross is the door where you go to the Library. Love to all. Frank xxxx State Library of Victoria Image H2014.1013/72
24.01.2022 Tyabb Cool Stores, January 1967. They officially opened April 21, 1914 and are now an antiques centre. It even had it's own railway siding. The cool store reminds us that the Mornington Peninsula was once a significant apple and fruit growing area. The photo is from the Public Records Office of Victoria, Railway Negatives collection VPRS12800, Image S0704 and is actually titled 'Signal Equipment (Mr D. Macaulay) Jan. 1967, Tyabb Looking in up direction from level crossing' I have cropped the photo to hone in on the Cool Stores.
24.01.2022 These scenes of Carrum, Mentone and Rye are from the sketchbook of Idalia McKail (1886-1980) when she was a student at the National Art Gallery, Melbourne between 1908 and 1911. I don't know much else about her apart from the fact that she was the daughter of Thomson John Bailey McKail and Leonore Simeon. State Library of Victoria http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/242681

Read more here https://localhistory.kingston.vic.gov.au/articles/52 I listened to a fascinating Zoom talk last night on the history of Mentone by David Dodd. It was part of a series of events to celebrate the 95th anniversary of Mentone Public Library - a volunteer run, subscription library service. https://mentonepubliclibrary.blogspot.com/ That's an amazing achievement - serving the community for 95 years (and still going strong.) 21.01.2022 X is for X-Ray. This is the mobile x-ray unit that was to visit the Shires of Berwick and Cranbourne in 1950. I remember my Dad having to go and have a compulsory TB x-rays when I was young, don't remember Mum having to go. Victoria had compulsory chest x-rays from October 1963 to 1976, before that it was voluntary. This is a great document from the Commission of Public Health which talks about the prevalence and treatment of TB in Victoria parliament.vic.gov.au/papers/govpub/VPARL1976-78No105.pdf Image from Dandenong Journal October 11, 1950 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/219304408#

It continued to operate under various owners until 1978 and is now Wilson Botanic Park. There were other basalt quarries in the Berwick region, sand quarries around Cranbourne; the granite quarry at Tynong, which supplied the stone for the Shrine. Casey Cardinia Libraries photo.
13.01.2022 Thank you for following the alphabetical trip around the SEHA region, I feel it's been a gem of a journey and so we end with - Z is for Zircon. These Zircon gems were found in the Bunyip River (eastern branch), 17 km north of Longwarry. Photographer: Frank Coffa. These have, of course, been faceted and made to look very pretty. Has anyone ever been fossicking in a local creek or river and found some gems? Image: Museums Victoria https://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/specimens/47322
13.01.2022 This great photo by Fred Kruger is from 1878 - The mouth of the Mordialloc Creek near Cheltenham. Fishing seems to be an equal opportunity pastime in 1878. State Library of Victoria Image H41139/114
13.01.2022 GMH Proving Ground at Lang Lang was established in 1957 and has since tested every model from the FC onwards. With the closure of Holden, the site is for sale and given that the majority of the 877 hectare site is still natural bush land it would be a great opportunity for the Government to buy it and preserve the bush forever. There is a short history of the site here https://caseycardinialinkstoourpast.blogspot.com//for-many Image: Advertisement from Port of Melbourne Quarterly April-June 1966, p.40.

11.01.2022 This lovely watercolour and drawing, signed E. Langford, is of sand hills at Phillip Island. It is from Jessie Traill's 1900 autograph book, which has been digitisied by the State Library - see it here http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/202756 Jessie Traill was an artist, I have written about her here http://caseycardinialinkstoourpast.blogspot.com//jessie-tr The autograph book is a delight. Jessie served as a VAD in France in the Great War and SLV have also digitised her photo album from her time in France http://handle.slv.vic.gov.au/10381/238517 The only mystery is - who is E. Langford? I have yet to find out.
08.01.2022 W is for Warneet and Western Port. Warneet is on Rutherford Inlet at the northern end of Western Port. This aerial from October 19, 1986 shows Quail Island on the left of the Inlet and Chinaman Island on the right of the Inlet. Warneet is the township, north of Chinaman Island; Cannons Creek is at the top of aerial. First land sales at Warneet took place in 1930 and the area was locally known Crouchs Beach after Les Crouch who helped build the first jetty and slip way in the 1930s, was the first President of the Warneet Progress Association which was formed in 1945, and the inaugural Commodore of the Warneet Motor Yacht Club. 03.01.2022 We are looking at various industries in the SEHA region, in this case the entertainment industry. This is the Dandenong Picture Theatre. The image is called 'Cyclone Truss Section. In use at Dandenong Theatre', photographer Ritter & Jeppesen Studios. It is dated c. 1941, but I wonder if is actually 1946 when the theatre was 're-seated, re-furnish- ed, carpeted, re-painted and decorated' (Dandenong Journal 10/4/1946).At the same time the name changed from the Boomerang Theatre (opened 1923) to the Mayfair Theatre. .
