25.01.2022 Hi All, The Victorian Challenge has come to an end for the 2019-2020 Season. No new entries will be accepted for scoring fish for this season. There have been a few submissions in the last couple of days of the competition, making the top few spots really close.... The final results will be tallied and released at the Southern Freedivers presentation night (to be held sometime this year). Thank you to all the competitors for participating in the comp while targeting some of Victoria's tastiest species! Also a big thank you to all the people from Southern Freedivers and Geelong Freedivers that have made themselves available to weigh fish from competitors with their certified scales. A final thanks to Murray Petersen (Abstraction Pty Ltd) for donating the prizes for this competition and supporting this great competition over multiple years. I have really enjoyed assisting and reporting on this comp and I look forward to the 2020-2021 Victorian Challenge.

22.01.2022 Hi All, There have been a few submissions that were caught just before and after the stage 3 restrictions including a 970gm Sweep, a 3.19kg Crayfish and a 730gm Trevally from Hilly, moving him up to 3rd place on the leader board. Chris weighed in an 895gm Flathead moving him up to 4th place on the leader board. There are 7 weigh points around Port Phillip Bay and the contact details are in the "2019/2020 Victorian Challenge" thread that is in the competitions section on the S...FD Forum. Even though the water is cooling down, there is still a lot of boat traffic around, so please dive safe and always have a high vis float with an alpha dive flag. Please note the Vic Challenge for this season concludes on Monday 8th June. No entries will be accepted after this date.

22.01.2022 Hi all, Due to the stage 3 restrictions, we will not be accepting any submissions of fish for the Victorian Challenge for any fish taken from 31st March until the restrictions are lifted. Before the stage 3 restrictions came into effect, there was only 1 submission for the Vic Challenge and this was Watto's 12.05kg Kingfish, which missed out on the 10 points by 225gm. He did score 9 points for his fish and although it did not change the order of the leaderboard, it put him wi...thin 4 points of Kim Adair, who remains on top of the leader board. Refer to the picture for the updated tally. Normally i would give an update on which species are being targeted, but for now its none. We look forward to seeing everyone getting back into this competition when the restrictions are lifted.

14.01.2022 Victorian state titles are less that 4 weeks away! We’re looking at holding it along the back beaches and Phillip island. We’ll be releasing a list of possible locations on Saturday 27th Feb and the final call will be made on the following Thursday prior to the event once an accurate weather forcast is released. 13.01.2022 Even though the Corona virus has shut everything down as far as aggregate competitions and meetings goes. One of Victoria’s premier spearfishing competitions is still functioning and that is our Victorian challenge. Some great fish have already been weighed in and there is still plenty of season left for those still looking for that elusive fish. The competition rules and forms for submitting fish are available on the Southern Freedivers forum. So get out there submit your catches and we will make this years Vic challenge one to remember

13.01.2022 Hi All, The first group of fish have been submitted for the 2020 - 2021 Victorian Challenge and the first was a good size Squid from Mitch. The squid have been laying eggs and this is the perfect time to get out there and target them in all the usual spots. Weighing in 3 fish, Stoj has kicked off his tally with 29 points with a Sea sweep, Salmon and a Squid.... Mitch with his 10 point Squid is not too far behind for now. With cray season open, this is the perfect time to target the tasty species and with Christmas around the corner, they will be a perfect addition to the menu for any Christmas lunch. There are reports of good size whiting being caught by line fisherman and as a tough species to target on spear, any good size capture could help win the competition at the end of the season. Snapper are also being caught in good numbers on rod and reel, so now is the best time of the year to try and get one on spear. The water is also warming up and although it isn't quite there for kings locally, some smaller ones have been caught by line fisherman in western vic. See attached for the leader board. We're looking forward to seeing more fish weighed in over the next month and remember to always have a float and flag when diving.

13.01.2022 Danny has announced that fishing is allowed as of midnight tonight. Therefore we’ll now be accepting entries for the Vic Challenge for fish taken on or after May 13th. Current leader board is as follows.

12.01.2022 Some of our members will be diving in the flinders area tomorrow at either flinders ocean beach or flinders blowhole. Scott McRae has kindly offered to cook a BBQ at the flinders pier picnic area at 2pm for anyine diving. Feel free to come down for a chat!

12.01.2022 Hi All, Southern Freedivers ran the Sorrento Boat Comp as the first competition of the 2020-2021 season yesterday. At the start of the comp the water was reasonably calm in the bay where we all set off and were greeted with large surf on the ocean side of the mornington peninsula for those that decided to go straight out through the heads. One diver (Kim) had to turn around after losing both his guns off his ski within the first 5 minutes of the race, ending his competition a...nd he ended up swimming around with some squid while looking for his spearguns. The swell was lower on the point lonsdale side of the ocean, but there was a westerly/south westerly wind causing a bit of chop. The bay was reasonably calm and the wind dropped in the afternoon to almost nothing towards the bottom of the bay. Was good to see Pete Riddle from Port Fairy and Dave Scholefield from SA come over to compete. Due to our covid safe plan we were unable to have a bbq, but were able to have the weigh-in while wearing masks and hear all about the problems Kim had with his jetski over the day. The final scores are as follows. Paul Blackborrow - 12 species - 1378.3 pts (non-member) Brett Illingworth - 10 species - 1134.15 pts 100% Marcus Dorfstatter - 10 fish - 1104.1 pts 97.35% Dave Scholefield - 9 fish - 996.35 pts (non-member) Peter Riddle - 8 fish - 896.35 pts 79.03% Bob Manning - 7 fish - 777 pts 68.51% Spencer Gubbins - 6 fish - 678.5 pts 59.82% Stoj Pavlovski - 5 fish - 568.9 pts 50.16% Josef Bednarek - 3 fish - 331.25 pts 29.21% Notable fish weighed in were: Flounder (345gm) Brett Illingworth Six Spined Leather Jacket (1220gm) Brett Illingworth Squid (1835gm) Brett Illingworth Silver Drummer (1095gm) Paul Blackborrow Trumpeter (1360gm) Paul Blackborrow Well done to Paul Blackborrow for taking out the comp with 12 species! Thanks to everyone that attended and look forward to seeing everyone at the next comp!

11.01.2022 SFD calendar for the 20/21 season. a printable version is on the forum. Keep in mind that these dates may change due to corona restrictions. The main one to look out for is the presentation night on the 28th November.

09.01.2022 Due to today’s lockdown the Bluefin battle has been postponed. We’ll be holding this event later in the year when the tuna and weather line up again. Let’s look forward to next weekend with Newhaven boat comp. Fingers crossed!!

08.01.2022 We’ve finally got some decent conditions for an ocean dive this weekend. Who’s up for a social dive on Saturday? Bbq afterwards.

07.01.2022 Hey guys We hope everyone is maintaining their sanity in this time of staying dry. For those who live near the ocean, lucky you. Usually this time of year we’d be celebrating the end of season with beers and a fantastic presentation night however this year has been anything from normal, and will stay that way for the foreseeable future. Therefore we’ve had to make a few changes...... You’ve probably noticed that there’s is no presentation night planned. We will hold one at some stage, maybe later in the year, maybe early next year. We promise it’ll be a good one. Usually at the presentation night the Vic Challenge results are released. Since there is no preso night, we will be releasing them early (before the start of the next season). As the current lockdown laws suggest we shouldn’t be leaving our postcode for fishing, we’re going to be delaying the start of the next Vic Challenge. The new season will start when these laws are relaxed. We’ll put up a post announcing the start when that time comes. Club membership is due for renewal. Make use of the AUF extending the early bird offer till the end of August. So that’s $80 for seniors and $40 for juniors plus a $25 club fee. The club calendar hasn’t been released due to the possibility of dates changing, releasing a calendar now will cause more confusion. Once things start to settle we’ll get a calendar out to you ASAP. For now, the only date you need to worry about is the 31st August (end of AUF early bird offer). We hope everyone understands why we have to do this. Looking forward to shooting some fish soon. SFD committee

04.01.2022 Gulf Skindivers proudly present the 2021 South Aus. Spearfishing State Titles. Jan 9-10th on Kangaroo Island. 12 weeks to go until the State Titles will be held... on the diverse North Coast of K.I and possible dive locations include: Emu Bay, Cape Cassini, Stokes Bay, Western River Cove, Snellings Beach and West Bay. The welcome pack including the rules, score sheet with the species list and minimum weights needed as well as all other info will be released shortly. Divers will need to sort their own accommodation so start booking spots now as they will be sure to fill up fast due to most people holidaying locally this year.
