25.01.2022 Have you ever felt like you were 'in the zone'? It may have been playing sport, music, video gaming, or going for a run. For decades, researchers have tried to find out what the zone is and how to enter it. And the assumption has been that there is one zone that we can experience. New research from Southern Cross University sport and exercise psychology experts Dr Christian Swann and PhD candidate Scott Goddard suggests that there may be two types of zone.... One is a 'flow state', where athletes describe effortlessly 'letting it happen'. The other is a 'clutch state', where athletes report making it happen by purposefully and powerfully stepping up in a key moment. Here’s how to decide which zone you need to be in and how to get there: https://bit.ly/35URdZp

17.01.2022 #Bignews The first Coral IVF babies deployed onto the Great Barrier Reef are thriving! Despite the most widespread bleaching event ever recorded, Southern Cross University researchers have found more than 60 coral colonies, born through the first Coral IVF trial on the Reef in 2016, thriving and likely to spawn next year. Lead researcher Professor Peter Harrison has just returned from a research trip to Heron Island to check on the progress of the 2016 coral babies and to co...nduct further Coral IVF trials in the southern Great Barrier Reef. I was thrilled to see healthy branching Acropora colonies that are on track to start reproducing themselves in the coral larval restoration sites we settled larvae in four years ago during the first small-scale pilot study, Professor Harrison said. The first Coral IVF trial was made possible with the support of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. Read more: https://bit.ly/3aorJGu

13.01.2022 Southern Cross University scientists have won the global NASA competition with their Rapid Repair wound-healing technology! The ground-breaking technology will be catapulted into space to treat astronauts, repairing wounds in days rather than weeks. Developed by Southern Cross University’s Dr Rosemary Craig and Dr Nedeljka Rosic with business partner Gerard Criss, Rapid Repair projects a fine virtual skin scaffold into damaged skin so that molecules flowing into the wound a...lign as they would in undamaged skin. This reduces the need for stitches, staples and glue in many clinical situations. NASA has requested us to send a sample to the International Space Station for astronauts to test in micro and zero gravity. And following this week’s announcement of Australia partnering with the NASA Artemis Accord, our technology could be on the mission where the first female astronaut walks on the moon in 2024," Project leader Dr Rosemary Craig said. 05.01.2022 Five tips for a healthier Christmas Christmas is a time of fun, family, and festive cheer. It is also a time where we tend to over-indulge. Southern Cross University PhD candidate and academic tutor Megan Lee specialises in nutritional psychiatry. She shares some small and easy ways we can feel happy and healthier this Christmas.... 1Get involved in active Christmas sports. Join the kids in the backyard for some cricket, head to the beach or your favourite swimming spot and cool down. After Christmas dinner encourage the family to all get out for a walk to see the local Christmas lights. 2Snack throughout the day rather than eating three large Christmas meals (summer stone fruits and nuts are amazing choices). If you do choose to eat a big lunch, try to go for the seafood options over starchy carbs like bread and pudding. Skip the turkey, it has a protein in it that makes you feel sleepy after eating it. 3Skip or slow down your alcohol intake. Drink water between drinks, use soda water as a mixer rather than sugary fizzy drinks. 4Reduce holiday stress remember you don’t have to spend time with anyone who makes you unhappy or uncomfortable (even if they are family). Start your own Christmas traditions, if the ones your family have cause unnecessary stress. 5Instead of giving presents this year, trade experiences with your loved ones. Make a voucher book for the kids with trips to the movies, slumber parties, favourite foods, hugs, board game nights that they can redeem throughout the year. Bake, build, grow, paint or make gifts for other family members.

01.01.2022 Thumbs up if a massage has ever helped improve your mental wellbeing. if you've experienced the same benefits while pregnant. New research reveals the benefits of partner-delivered relaxation massage to help with anxiety in pregnancy. One in five pregnant women suffers from perinatal anxiety and/or depression, corresponding to nearly 100,000 women a year. According to a recent analysis, perinatal mental health issues are costing Australia a staggering $877 million per ye...ar. "New parents often report feelings of insecurity and lack of confidence in the efficacy of self-care activities. Through the partner delivered massage our participants regained feelings of control and autonomy which are key drivers in maintaining positive psychological health and reducing the need for clinical and/or pharmacological interventions," Associate Professor Romy Lauche, Deputy Director of Research at the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine, Southern Cross University explains. But it was not only women who benefited from the partner-based interventions: their partners also reported significant changes. Continue reading: https://bit.ly/31c8dI1
