15.01.2022 It was as black as the inside of a cat as we neared this most storied and feared of all the great capes. The wind backed and blew even harder as the swell- tall grey bearded widow makers- chased our wake. A lone Albatross accompanied us, soaring above us, sending shivers up the spine of those that have heard the fable that they are the souls of sailors lost in this lonely and godless stretch of ocean. Anticipation and trepidation grew with each mile we closed the cape - for m...ost on board this was the achievement of a life time and if they lived, they could walk tall with the other brave souls that have weathered this famous headland. Dawn comes quietly at this latitude and black slowly became grey under the leaden sky. Suddenly the low cloud was briefly parted by the spume filled gale and there it was! 1/2 a mile away on our beam towered the famous rock with lighthouse on top! The crew stared in awe- we had done it - rounded ‘Patron de dia Cabo de Hornos’ The Day Skippers Cape Horn. Double island Point! Then it was into Tin Can Bay for Bacon Rolls. Now we are all off to get our left ear pierced.
