25.01.2022 Want a better idea of what our bucket-list ticking 2021 "Southern Lights Flight" is all about? Check out this New Zealand news footage of a similar flight out of Dunedin in a 767 back in 2017. Ready to join ours out of Melbourne in a flash chartered Qantas 787-9 Dreamliner in September 2021?!... https://youtu.be/ePiObslewVE Contact us TODAY at [email protected] for more info!
24.01.2022 WOW! Take a look at the upcoming Kp (aurora "strength") indices coming along between October 20th to 28th. Kp of 4.0s and right up to a HIGH of Kp 6.0 on Sunday 25th! The Kp-index is the global geomagnetic activity index that is based on 3-hour measurements from ground-based magnetometers around the world. The Kp-index ranges from 0 to 9 where a value of 0 means that there is very little geomagnetic activity and a value of 9 means extreme geomagnetic storming.... In Australia, even in Southern Tasmania at around 41 S latitude, to see auroras would really require a Kp of around 6-7 if not greater to be able to see with the naked eye low in the sky. If you look at the second image, it gives a rough indication of the Kp required at different latitudes to be able to see auroras even if low on the horizon. Given that auroras generally occur around 80km and right up to as high as 600km above the Earth's surface, this means that auroras can be seen further north than the second chart indicates. Under clear dark skies with unobscured/unrestricted views to the southern horizon, auroras can still possibly be seen very low on the horizon around 500km north of where the Kp index chart would indicate they should be visible. With a Kp of 6.0, southern Tasmania should have some nice auroras low in the southern sky and even parts of southern Victoria potentially may have views very low on the southern horizon under very dark skies (but mores visible on long-exposure photography rather than with the naked eye) Booking coming and think and fast for our 2021 Sept 25th "Southern Light Flight"! We're chartering a Qantas 787-9 Dreamliner to fly ~3,000km south of Melbourne to around 65 latitiude to (fingers crossed!) view the mesmerising aurora australis from 38,000feet! 22.01.2022 Looking forward to showing and teaching my guests how to photograph the enchanting Southern Lights from 38,000ft in September 2021 on our inaugural Southern Lights Flight! My passion for astrophotography started almost 35 years ago when Halley's Comet graced our skies in 1986! I've been running group tours right across Europe/Russia/Scandinavia since 2001 and then starting my very own boutique, bucket-list ticking 4-5 star trips at Quo Vadis Holidays in 2011 (including my m...ost popular trip, the 14-day "Arctic Circle and Auroras" watching and photographing the Northern Lights in Scandinavia since 2017). I'm very excited and looking forward to assisting my guests on board this unique flight next year to also see and photograph themselves the mesmerising aurora australis! With renowned Melbourne-based British astrophysicist Professor Alan Duffy on board as Guest Speaker! I invite you to take a look at some of my aurora borealis photos from Scandinavia and Iceland on my photography website: https://tlkphotography.com.au//quovadis-holidays-to/aurora Seat selection available at time of booking, NO need to rotate your seats with other passengers on our flight PLUS our date is right around the week of the Sept equinox when auroras have the greatest probability! 19.01.2022 Something to whet your appetites.... Here’s a compilation of time-lapse and even real-time Northern Lights footage the owner/Director of Quo Vadis Holidays has taken over the last four years whilst leading his groups around northern Scandinavia in search of the Tricky Lady herself. Cameras always bring more brightness, colour and vibrance to auroras than the naked eye can. Never-the-less, you can see from the real-time footage towards the end they can still give off a lovel...y soft, pale green hue and their shimmering movements are like curtains blowing gently in a breeze. Our 14-day Arctic Circle and Auroras trip through Sweden, Finland and Norway is our most popular trip and the ultimate and most complete bucket-list ticking adventure through Scandinavia in winter. Our first departure is already almost full for Feb 2022. Looking forward to showing our guests the Southern Lights from 38,000ft in September 2021 on our Southern Lights Flight! 18.01.2022 Some VERY exciting news to announce for next year's inaugural 787 Dreamliner "Southern Lights Flight" out of Melbourne to view the aurora australis over the Southern Ocean near Antarctica... I can now finally confirm that our Guest Astrophysicst on board will be none other than astronomer and tv science guru extraordinaire Professor Alan Duffy! Those here in Australia will no doubt recognise him from his regular science/astronomy/physcis updates on Ch10's "The Project". (sor...ry for those of you were expecting former "Aussie Bachelor" astrophysicist Matt Agnew hah!) Not such a bad CV...: - Born in England and growing up Ireland - degree in Physics at the University of Manchester. - incorporated study in the Netherlands on an EU scholarship, working on supercomputers at Europe's oldest observatory in Leiden University - undertook physics at the University of Amsterdam (even though he spoke no Dutch when he started. And for anyone who has also tried to learn Dutch you'll appreciate what a task that is!) - Master of Physics (1st ) in 2005 - PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics in 2009 at the University of Manchester - his thesis entitled "Investigation of large scale structure in the Universe". - invited to Australia in 2009 to assist with the first stage of the Australian component of the Square Kilometer Array which will become the world's largest astronomical facility - 2012 accepted an academic post as Postdoctoral Research Fellow at my alma mater of Melbourne University - Associate Professor at Swinburne University of Technology here in Melbourne - regular speaker at conventions and guest speaker on Australian tv for anything science-based. I think he might know a thing or two about auroras...... Looking forward to having the Professor on board to entertain and enlighten us on auroras and all things science and astrophysics on this unique and exciting flight next September! (Oh and sorry ladies, he's married with a young child hah!) Seats selling fast and overwhelmed by the interest in this exciting adventure. 03.01.2022 So why did I choose September 25th 2021 for my Quo Vadis Holidays inaugural Southern Lights Flight? The graph below of Kp or aurora strength pretty much explains it all! The Kp-index is a measure of the global geomagnetic activity index (i.e. the solar wind that causes auroras) which is based on 3-hour measurements from ground-based magnetometers around the world. The Kp-index ranges from 0 to 9 where a value of 0 means that there is very little geomagnetic activity and a... value of 9 means extreme geomagnetic storming. In Australia, even in Southern Tasmania at around 41 S latitude, to see auroras would really require a Kp of around 5-6 if not greater to be able to see them with the naked eye low in the sky. If you look at the second image, it gives a rough indication of the Kp required at different latitudes to be able to see faint auroras even if low on the horizon. One can clearly see from the bar chart, the week around the Sept equinox (and also the March equinox), the aurora strengths are MUCH greater than outside that week when Kp is down to a relatively normal 1.0-2.0. This is due to the "Russell-McPherron Effect" (which is a post for another day!) As Kp is a logarithmic scale, it means that Kp 3.0 is not 1.5 times stronger than Kp 2.0 but is actually TWICE as strong. Kp 4.0 is FOUR times stronger than Kp 2.0 and Kp 5 is EIGHT times stronger than Kp 2.0! (That's the engineer in me coming out!) To travel outside of the equinoxes risks not only much less chance of seeing auroras but also, if seen, they will be most likely far weaker/fainter and far less active than during the week of the equinoxes. We’ll be flying right down to 60-62 south PLUS being there around the equinox to ensure your aurora flight is the best aurora australis experience possible! On top of that, we have NO seat rotation required, you may select your preferred seat based on availability at the time of booking PLUS your deposits are fully refundable until March 20th. Our chartered Qantas 787-9 Dreamliner will fly ~3,000km south of Melbourne to around 62 latitiude to (fingers crossed!) view the mesmerising aurora australis from 38,000feet! Bookings already coming in daily for our 2021 Sept 25th "Southern Light Flight"! 01.01.2022 Seeing an aurora for the very first time for most people is an unforgettable experience! Am very lucky in my "work" designing and running boutique, small-group trips around Europe, Scandinavia and beyond to have seen auroras on over 40 separate occasions throughout Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland over the years. Always an absolute thrill! A handful of some of my literally, thousands of aurora photos I have below. ... From faint, dull white, stationary bands barely visible to the naked eye to mesmerising performances of pastel greens, faint pinks and even mauves stretching overhead and from horizon to horizon shimmering like curtains blowing in a breeze! Choosing the right time and date on our exciting 2021 "Southern Lights Flight" is not done by chance nor on a whim! To absolutely maximise our chances of seeing auroras on this adventure we choose the very small window of the week around the equinox when, due to the Russell-McPherron Effect, aurora activity is always known to be much brighter and far more frequent. We've chosen September 25th for that very reason (and also taking into account the phase of the moon to reduce the effect it can have on the darkness of the night sky) - NO seat rotation during the flight - Seat selection at time of booking - Maximised chance of seeing auroras by flying around the equinox - Renowned astrophysicst Professor Alan Duffy as guest speaker on board - Three seating options and full international service! - Expert photography assistance on board - Refundable deposits until March 20th, 2021 Departs Melbourne 8pm Saturday 25th September 2021.
