She’s had a four week history of right hindlimb lameness and pain when getting up from a resting position. ... Radiographs revealed a lateral fabella fracture, which is uncommon and is typically a spontaneous injury without external trauma. Conservative management has been recommended for Coco with 4 weeks of strict rest. If lameness persists in 4-8 weeks, surgical removal of the fracture fragment can be considered. The result of pain and lameness was due to lysis and bone formation in Loki’s toe. Loki’s owner opted for digit amputation. Loki has been recommended to have a bandage change in 7 days & 2-4 weeks of exercise restriction. ... Radiographs revealed a supraglenoid tubercle avulsion fracture (where bone fragment is torn away from the scapula). Dr Ben performed a bicep tendon releasing procedure, allowing the shoulder a greater range of motion. The fragment was also removed. Sweet baby Gigi will be rested for 6 weeks and her owner has been advised to undertake physiotherapy in one month. 16.01.2022 ~~~~~~ Story Of The Week ~~~~~~ Angel Angel is a darling 6 year old Pug who was experiencing episodes of sleep apnea as well as collapse and cyanosis (blue-coloured gums due to lack of oxygen). Pugs like Angel are common sufferers of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).... Short-head breeds like Pugs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Bulldogs are at the highest risk of complications from this condition, due to their anatomy. Components include an excessively long soft palate, slit-like nostrils, narrowed windpipe and excessive soft tissue at the back of the throat. All of these features contribute to obstruction of airflow into the lungs. Initially, Angel had surgery to remove her laryngeal saccules, shorten her soft palate and widen her nostrils. After almost one year, Angel re-presented to Southpaws with upper respiratory noise. Angel had grade III laryngeal collapse, which is end stage disease due to BOAS - the cartilages of the voice box (larynx) becomes very soft and collapse, obstructing airflow further. Her owners elected for treatment with a permanent tracheostomy. Angel has recovered exceptionally well, and went home two days later. Angel will not be able to swim in future, as water can enter the tracheostomy site on the neck and enter the lungs, resulting in drowning. Angel was sent home with steroids to prevent inflammation, pain relief, antiemetics, antibiotics and antacids. 02.01.2022 ~~~Farewell to a love~~~ Rufus Southpaws had the pleasure of looking after the beautiful soul that was Rufus. This young Dalmatian came into our lives 18 months ago, with symptoms of Immune Mediated Polyarthritis (IMPA). ... In June this year Rufus represented to Southpaws with spinal pain and unfortunately Rufus was diagnosed with Grade V Lymphoma. Rufus received a chemotherapy protocol for the treatment of Lymphoma. When chemotherapy was no longer helpful for the crippling pain that Lymphoma caused Rufus, his beautiful and dedicated owners made the heart wrenching decision to put Rufus to sleep. Words cannot describe how sorry we are for the loss of such a gorgeous boy. Rufy really did brighten our day each time he visited. We’ll remember his unique smile as he would run toward us in the clinic His high fives and lovely cuddles will be missed.
