25.01.2022 Internet providers and service levels... Hi All, We had a few good wasted hours this week with a customer choosing iiNet.... They advertise on TV and are a big company so they should be good - right? ...no... We used to be a reseller for Westnet - a small WA company that had great customer service and products but as soon as they were bought by iiNet their customer service went downhill FAST. This last week was spent trying to find out why the existing $300 router wouldnt connect - we were told we had to get a $500 router instead. Only after the 3rd call to iinet we were told new information and instantly connected - leaving the customer with unneeded expenses. We recommend Aussie Broadband as theyve never steered us wrong and we always talk to an Australian help desk. The trouble with big companies is that they ALWAYS outsource - we should all band together to support local businesses with real support! Cheaper is not better and this has been proven time and time again!

25.01.2022 Wow last weeks post reached so many people - we hope this helps many out there but also shows were all about help and support. We will always advise on what you need and our recommendations are based on experience. When we suggest something, we know that it has been tried and tested and ready for your business growth!

25.01.2022 Hi all, Weve had 3 incidents this week with "Crypto virus" damage - this has extremely destructive effects and typically files can only be restored from backup. This has the potential effect of not only losing a day of work, but downtime for staff whilst data is restored....Continue reading

24.01.2022 NEW WARNING!!! Most of us have already had calls from "NBN" threatening to cut off the phone lines in 24 hours - some of these seem obvious but this is a new threat... Weve had a customer who today received a call from "Telstra" regarding their existing NBN application - the caller quoted the correct reference number and knew the details of the planned installation. Because of the information they provided, the customer had little hesitation in sending them a copy of his dr...ivers license and paid an upfront fee with his credit card. Suspicion grew after the fact and he called Telstra, only to be informed that it was a scam - potentially by data leaked/sold from within Telstra or its call centers. (the statement by the Telstra contact of course cannot be verified or quoted as fact, however if there is a breach then Telstra will be bound by the Data Breach Notification Act and would be required to report to all parties involved if details have been compromised) In this case the main red flag was the email address used - nbnptyltd @ australiamail . com - this is really nothing to do with NBNCo or Telstra. PLEASE think twice before sending off information and remember that Telstra and all other internet providers will NEVER ask for upfront credit card payments as they always bill after the fact. Be safe out there and if there is a sniff of doubt CALL US FIRST - a quick call for the right information is free and can prevent fraud and potential identity theft.

23.01.2022 Infra-red seems to not reflect Kias blue.. More importantly infra-red makes daylight at night time but only visible by the cameras. This is the current standard of camera - 5 megapixels and totally weatherproof!

22.01.2022 Hi All, Yes youve seen so many announcements regarding Covid-19 that youre probably sick of. Even though restrictions have eased we dont want to abuse this as so many seem to have done - even today I see so many blatant disregards for others safety it makes me sick. ... I will still maintain a safe distance and sterilise where possible. We are not over this yet and will keep safety of us all as a priority.

22.01.2022 Hi all, As many are concerned about the state of the world, the same amount of you are considering safe practices to keep staff safe and isolated. Most of our customers have measures in place to allow staff to work remotely but please contact us if you need assistance.... Likewise many customers hire staff who cannot work remotely - like us they rely on hands-on work and onsite presence. We will always practice superb hygene for all customers. We reassure all Australians will move past this - even though alot of the hype is driven by the media. On that note, please be aware that alot of shipments of hardware although currently in stock is also goverened by overseas and interstate shipments and we are foreseeing a shortage in devices soon. Please be aware that some orders may be delayed but we will advise where needed.

21.01.2022 Hi all, When youre stuck in a situation well do our best to come to a resolution - were currently retrieving a 3 year old backup from a 9 year old server that has been decommissioned 2 years ago to get back a few mailboxes - its a long process sometimes but it can be done. Thats our purpose - customer service!

21.01.2022 There is new information arising about MYOB support for certain organisations. It seems those using Accountants Office or Accountants Enterprise will no longer support several common server and office versions as of December this year. If you havent been contacted by us already about this then please let us know if youre affected by this change. Years flow by quickly and you might be surprised how old your current server is.

21.01.2022 Passwords!! We all hate them and have to keep so many... These passwords are keys to our lives now - banking, accounting, identity and so much more. ... We would like to remind everyone that your password needs to be STRONG like a bull as more depends on it than you think. Please change your passwords periodically and make sure theyre more than 8 characters without conforming to common patterns. Try to make a phrase - a little random so that no-one can guess or take hints from your domain or username. For example "Placename1" doesnt cut it by todays standards. Microsoft have been recommending to disable password expiry policies lately, but we will continue to enforce them due to recent activity.

20.01.2022 Need a commercial wifi network? Open-Mesh access points give you great coverage and all the data reporting you could ever need. Cloud managed and hassle free. These are to be installed into a three level motel in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

20.01.2022 "Update Tuesday" Microsoft commonly release updates on the second Tuesday of each month. You might find that computers and sometimes servers reboot automatically to apply these updates on Wednesday. Unfortunately Microsofts philosophy feels like "Lets just release it and see how it goes" but so many users experience issues.... If you experience any problems around this time please first try and reboot a few times for the updates to complete and then let us know if they still reappear.

18.01.2022 Wow its hard to get time to post! Heres an example of a PC that needed regular maintenance due to its environment - a clean every 6 months could have prevented it to fail catastrophically. Its only a surveillance PC but it can mean the difference between "business as usual" and a liability lawsuit. Think about it!

18.01.2022 Subway POS... Most POS systems in Subway stores are running super slow mechanical drives. We always supplied SSD drives in the past and we can make your POS system 10 times faster by doing a simple upgrade. Contact us for more information - its a reasonably priced upgrade!

16.01.2022 Hi all, Most of you already know, however keep an eye out for current malicious emails that have been circulating since the start of the year. They are a two-step delivery system and because of this they manage to circumvent antispam and email protection filters.... Please alert this kind of email to all staff there have been an increasing wave of this type of delivery lately. If you have been sent link to Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, WeShare, etc etc, that contains a PDF, youll see that when you hover over the link within the shared file youll see it tries to take you to yet another location. The first link (in this case OneDrive) is legitimate and safe (and this is why it doesnt get blocked by antivirus software) but the second link is malicious. In some cases it has come from known senders, mostly because their account has been compromised. Please report these back to the sender where needed and delete these emails to prevent any issues. If you have been prompted to enter your credentials and have entered your details, please make actions to change your password immediately and contact us if you need assistance.

16.01.2022 Another scam alert! There have been emails circulating pretending to be Suncorp - they have an "updated terms" PDF attachment that is password protected, meaning it cannot be scanned by antivirus programs. The PDF then provides a link to log in to your internet banking account!... Please exercise vigilance as always and if youre a Suncorp customer be sure to recognise these before getting caught out!

15.01.2022 Were still learning - technology changes every day. Were always here to help for new advice and growing needs.

14.01.2022 Hi All, Its a New Year with new devices, programs and considerations. Please note this year well concentrate on security as always especially with email as this is still the biggest way scammers operate. ... Those out there still using simple passwords will be forced to change - a phrase is the new normal and Ive shown most of you this way of thinking before but it will now be enforced. Heres looking forward to a safe and prosperous 2020!!!

14.01.2022 Credit where credit is due.!

12.01.2022 Theres always something that challenges us - I feel like in 2020 there is nothing we cannot accomplish! This is a recent one where we had to repair a circuit using a smaller chip than the original - it JUST fit with a little work. I like inspiring challenges like this!!

12.01.2022 BUYER BEWARE - Harvey Norman/JB hi-fi etc Hi All, Please be aware that new devices from big retailers are shipping with Windows 10 "S"... This abomination is a level below Windows 10 Home - it is a cut down version that only allows programs available on the Microsoft Store. It sounds OK to start with but given the limited selection on the store it may leave many of you short of the programs you use - for example even Google Chrome is not available, along with many plugins you need for normal use. This can be crippling for those who expect the freedom that allows normal computers to do what we want. This version does allow upgrade to full Windows versions at a cost, and time taken to modify. Southside Computers will always quote the right versions of Windows that match the needs of your business, and specifications that wont Leave you waiting for programs to load for longer than they should. Service is our goal and we wont steer you wrong. If you do decide to purchase from the people who are only out to make a sale, get them to clarify and give you options to move forward. Any second guesses, just call us!!

09.01.2022 Hi All, In light of more phishing emails and potential to steal credentials, well be activating Multi-factor authentication on all Office 365/Exchange accounts. This means your account will require a mobile number attached and will not allow unauthorised logins without a code texted to your phone. Ill notify each user but please call if you experience any difficulties.

07.01.2022 Kebab anyone? We repair just about anything - even simple circuits like this kebab shaver power supply. Like The Goodies - anythinganytimeanywhere!

05.01.2022 A warning again - Telstra and phones/NBN Hi all, Another warning for consumers with a small office - There is at least one Telstra Business Centre and a certain renowned rep who is pushing customers to get new phone systems in light that the NBN will be cutting off analogue lines. ... From what weve seen so far NO effort is made to inspect current systems and quote outrageous monthly costs for a new one plus heaps of unneeded features. This for example can blow out costs to the hundreds of thousands of dollars over a 5 year contract. One recently was told their current system was incompatible, even though it just needed a low cost upgrade. I implore you all to discuss your options with alternative providers as VoIP services over NBN are great for small businesses and cost significantly less. Again if there are doubts of over quoting please just ask us for a second opinion - were not VoIP dealers but we KNOW what a business needs and understand that its not about what Telstra dictates. Also please dont be susceptible to their scare tactics on top of the automated phone scams out there.

04.01.2022 Wow after a big day of outages we still find that the Eight Mile Plains node is experiencing major troubles. Thanks to our friends Aussie Broadband who are keeping us informed every chance they get! You wont see Telstra or any others sharing info like this:... 24/07/2020 09:02pm AEST - The attending technician requires approximately 300 metres of cable to replace the section with the damage. The technician will return in the morning of 25/07/20. Due to the site being in a residential area, the technicians will be unable to perform works overnight and therefore will be on-site tomorrow. 02.01.2022 Hi all, Just want to add a further warning about recent spam and virus attachments... We recently have seen many attachments as ".docm" - these are Word Macros - ie scripts that are usually meant to make things easier, but in these cases the attachments run scripts that can infect or cause damage to files and networks.... Please remember that sending Word files is stiil an unusual procedure, and if you receive these look out for the telltale signs that it may be a virus. (address, email properties, unusual content) As always please contact us if there are any questions or concerns but as we always say vigilance can help prevent issues. In addition there is always the question "is it sent from someone in our organisation?" - the answer is most commonly "NO" Looking at the email properties can easily verify the originating source and prove that it is a "spoofed" address - pretending to be someone theyre not. We are currently researching different corporate antivirus and anti-spam solutions and will advise when we find the best working solutions for all our existing and new customers - stay listening!
