25.01.2022 "On 23 December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided, in its resolution 49/214, that the International Day of the Worlds Indigenous People shall be observed on 9 August every year. The date marks the day of the first meeting, in 1982, of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations. On this day, people from around the world are encouraged to spread the UNs message on the protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples." (via United Nations website) Events at the UN headquarters in New York include messages from high-level UN officials, governments, indigenous peoples and other key leaders; performances by indigenous artists; and panel discussions on emerging issues. Most reasons are due to inter-generational issues and trauma (Stolen Generations), mistrust of the education system, health (such as eyesight, hearing and ADHD) and too shy to attend school, etc. If youd like to learn more about Indigenous Literacy, try the following resources and programs: - Literacy for Life Foundation - Show Me The Way - Accelerated Literacy Program - Indigenous Literacy Foundation Source: Aboriginal literacy rates - Creative Spirits, retrieved from https://www.creativespirits.info//aboriginal-literacy-rate
