23.01.2022 Read the latest about using digital soil maps to make forecast decisions in the current issue of Precision Ag News https://spaa.com.au/resources/ Digital soil maps that use spatial data, machine learning and guided soil testing are pinpointing soil constraints and their specific impact on yield. The work is being perfected by Ed Jones from the University of Sydney and soil specialist Dr Pat Hulme, from Sustainable Soils Management in Warren, NSW. By showing farmers how constraints impact on yield, they can decide if amelioration is worthwhile.

21.01.2022 Read the latest about new options for on-farm connectivity and find you nearest Ag demo farm in the current issue of Precision Ag News https://spaa.com.au/resources/ In paddock sensors for water, weather, insect traps etc have been working well for a while. The missing link has been reliable and cheap connectivity for automatic data collection. In this article we look at a terrestrial IoT connectivity option, the Things Network, and Myriotas nano-satellite solution. Both offer great opportunities to Australian farmers but there are some differences that are worth understanding.

18.01.2022 Precision Ag News Sensors and the secret life of sheep Ground-breaking research into new technology is shining a light on previously hidden sheep behaviours. Australian Wool Innovation is using wearable sensors combined with some pretty complex algorithms to give sheep researchers an unprecedented amount of information on sheep behaviours.... Murdoch University’s Andrew Thompson is using wearable sensors - Smart Tags - to investigate pasture utilisation and feed efficiency. It could ultimately lead to the development of an alert system that could tell a producer remotely and real time the optimum time for moving sheep to fresh pasture.

16.01.2022 Launching our next "Three Minutes With...." Here we iintroduce Christina Ratcliff, Principal Research Technician at CSIRO. This video showcases Precision Ag Tools (PAT) plugin. PAT is a QGIS plugin for tools required for processing and analysing precision agriculture data. It includes tools for data cleaning and map interpolation to create TIFF's from high spatial density on-the-go sensor data such as yield monitor or EM38 soil sensor data. There are also tools for analysis of remotely sensed imagery and for the clustering of multiple datasets. And it coincides with a new release of QGIS3 / Python3 compatible version of PAT.

08.01.2022 Read the latest about farmers using new ag technology in the current issue of Precision Ag News https://spaa.com.au/resources/ Being an early adopter can be as exhausting as it is exciting. Having been among the first to use GPS guidance, autosteer and yield mapping in the late 1990s, the Sargents investment in PA technology stalled in the early 2000. They now focus on using their data, or tools supported by contractors, to better understand and manage variation. For his r...ecently completed Nuffield Farming Scholarship, Andrew took his family into a new area of early adoption open source farm software. He hopes this will offer ways to overcome compatibility issues, manufactures upgrades that make old data inaccessible, and the high costs of proprietary software. At the same time, it provides a way for farmers to stay in control of their data and encourage agtech developers to create add-ons that work with the open systems. See more

01.01.2022 In a year long study in the #SE SA, Elders agronomist trialled sensors for mapping nitrogen in canola. The key findings from this project include: -The variable rate map generated showed a significant amount of paddock variability, indicating sensor imagery such as this would be a worthwhile method in determining precise nitrogen application. -NDRE is less sensitive to plant population and bare soil readings than NDVI. -NDRE is more sensitive to crop shadowing than NDVI. -Res...ults indicated NDVI had the strongest relationship to yield at late flowering. 01.01.2022 Precision Ag News Remote alerts for wild dogs? Can sheep behaviour be used to remotely alert woolgrowers to the presence of a wild dog? Researchers working on Australian Wool Innovation's Smart Tag project believe so and are using wearable sensors to answer this and other animal welfare questions in what could be an important move in the ongoing war against wild dog predation.... Earlier research using GPS technology demonstrated there were some key sheep behavioural changes under simulated predation scenarios. Now a trial at Dunraven Station, in western Queensland, hopes to build on this research under commercial conditions and, ultimately, develop an algorithm that will offer an alert system to allow producers the option of intervention before it is too late.
