25.01.2022 A few Christmas Hampers are still available, order Monday or Tuesday to make sure you're on the list!

24.01.2022 There are worrying times ahead for the community sector and many economists agree this budget has done little to alleviate future challenges for those on low incomes. It seems that most of the benefits of the Stage 2 tax cuts will end up going to higher income earners 90% of the tax savings will go to the top 20% of earners while the bottom half of all Australian taxpayers will receive just 4%. According to The Australia Institute, despite the tax cuts for this year, low to middle income earners in Australia (which is most taxpayers!) will actually be paying more tax in the 2021/22 financial year. Watch their Budget review at the link, scroll down to the webinar entitled Federal Budget Wrap. https://nb.tai.org.au/webinar_series#previous

24.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week 2020 and all Australians are invited to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that sovereignty over these lands was never ceded.

24.01.2022 The wonderful volunteers at Rye Beach Op Shop (next to the laundromat) are kind enough to host a donation box for us. On Saturday we collected a total of $132.95 which will go to assisting those in our community who are doing it tough - so a huge thank you to the volunteers for supporting our work! They are an extremely dedicated and hard working group of people - and they would LOVE to have a few more volunteers there. If you're interested in joining a passionate team helping the community send them a message on via their Facebook page: Rye Beach Op Shop :) And if you're business owner and you're interested in hosting a donation box on our behalf please let us know! Email us on [email protected] or call 5986 1285 10am-2pm weekdays.

22.01.2022 Here at Southern Peninsula Community Support we see people all the time struggling to cover the costs of the most basic needs in life - food, rent, school costs, petrol, bills. The Coronavirus supplement has given many people a breather, a chance to catch up and not have to live with constant anxiety about how they'll manage to pay their next rent or bills. We can't go back to the old rate of Newstart, it wasn't enough then and it certainly won't be enough now. Click the link to have a postcard with your message sent to those making the decisions!

21.01.2022 We had a visit today from Connie and Craig, they wanted to know what we needed in the pantry, so we told them - and look what happened! They took our list to the local supermarket and stocked up - what a pair of legends, a huge thank you to you both for your wonderful support!

19.01.2022 What a fabulous effort by the wonderful students of St Josephs Primary School in Sorrento - their Kick-in-a-Can casual day gathered this huge haul which will go out to those in need in our community. Thank you St Joeys!!!

16.01.2022 Yay! We're moving our Needle Syringe Program back into its old home next to our new, flashy, renovated Reception area from tomorrow. This means the front doors will be open but only so people can access the program - sorry, we still can't accommodate face-to-face services yet, but they're coming! Please note, the hours for the Needle Syringe program will be shortened to 10am-2pm for the next little while, until we can go back to our usual hours - stay posted for updates! 15.01.2022 Looking for childcare in the Dromana area? Some casual spots available at Dromana Community House!

13.01.2022 Minister for the NDIS Stuart Robert has announced HUGE changes to NDIS assessments. Many people are extremely worried about what these changes will mean. It looks like more red tape for people with disabilities and less individualisation of services - and worst of all it might be a sneaky way to limit access to the scheme and save the government money. Tell the Minister your concerns - follow the link to find out how to do it! We’re really worried that these new assessments... will add yet another layer of stress and red tape for participants and their families. And we’re really concerned that the assessors will just use a tick a box system that won’t take into account individual circumstances. We also need to know this is not a sneaky way to limit access to the scheme and save the government money.

12.01.2022 Our amazing volunteers have been hard at work getting our pantry organised, and it is looking pretty fabulous! (Thanks to Mornington Peninsula Shire for the mobile cool room until we get our new one in place!) If you know of anyone who needs some assistance right now get them to give us a call on 5986 1285, 10am - 2pm weekdays. And stay tuned for announcements regarding new hours and our plans for return to face-to-face!!

12.01.2022 Every year, we help parents and carers on low incomes (in particular those on Centrelink) in the Southern Peninsula to apply for a NILs loan of up to $1,500 to cover the cost of essential school items such as uniforms, books, laptops, stationery, school camps, and musical instruments (as well as other essentials such as washing machines, fridges, car repairs, medical and dental expenses). Feel free to give us a call and speak to one of our NILs team members for more information - 5986 1285, 10am-2pm weekdays.

11.01.2022 Lost income due to Covid? Need help with household costs? Check out the Household Relief loan, up to $3000 to cover household costs - rent, utilities etc. paid back over 24 months with no interest and no fees.

10.01.2022 If you've been affected by Covid as a consumer in terms of things such as rental arrangements, refunds and scams try checking out the Consumer Affairs Victoria website. CAV has information and assistance on a range of Covid-related issues.

10.01.2022 Back in the Pantry at SPCS - a million thank yous to @Mornington Peninsula Shire for the use of Memorial Hall these last 10 months! We could not have supported the community the way we did through Covid without the use of the hall, we are very grateful.

09.01.2022 A while ago we put the call out for a bike trailer to help out a community member. The call was answered, and we were able to pass on the bike trailer to someone who really needed it - but check out the passenger! This gorgeous old pup hopped straight up into the trailer and was very happy with the top class ride! Another win for our community, and an opportunity to say thanks again to all the wonderful people who support us and donate to us as that's what keeps the whole thing running! *We always seek permission before we share photos :)

08.01.2022 This DHHS page provides information about and links to the financial support available to people and businesses affected by coronavirus (COVID-19).

08.01.2022 This is Anti-Poverty Week in Australia, and it could not be more relevant than right now. Foodbank Victoria have just released their Hunger Report 2020, and the figures are very concerning. Unfortunately these figures may be just the beginning.

05.01.2022 In the midst of another busy day we had some moments that made our day. A couple come to our gate and asked if they could speak to the CEO, he went out and they got quite emotional, they just wanted to say thank you and wanted us to know how much they appreciated all the support they had been given and that they think our volunteers are wonderful. They have had a very tough year and wanted to make the point how much it meant to them not to feel judged. A little later another client rang, she said much the same and wanted us to know how she had always been treated with the utmost respect. We always hope that we do these things, show respect and be non-judgmental, and to hear clients say it is something incredibly special. In a tough year our staff & volunteers have been fabulous, we cannot thank them enough

05.01.2022 Could you be a Community Connector? Communities across Australia have been significantly impacted by the 2020 bushfires and COVID-19. Many people are experiencing personal challenges as a result of these difficult times. To help communities further support each other local Lifeline Centres are offering people the opportunity to become a Community Connector . A Community Connector is someone with good connections to their community e.g. through a work environment or sporting ...group, who undertakes training in the Lifeline Accidental Counsellor information course and is then equipped to connect community members in need to appropriate local and national services. The Lifeline Accidental Counsellor training is for people who would like to be able to safely and effectively support someone in distress or experiencing a crisis. It is an open course, with no pre-existing skills or knowledge required and it is run free of charge. The course equips participants with the essential skills and structure to: - Recognise when a person is in crisis - Respond in an appropriate and compassionate manner, and - Refer the person to a suitable service Accidental Counsellor training aims to provide participants with the skills to support another in a moment of need and self-care tools to ensure their own wellbeing is in focus. While completion of the course does not make participants qualified counsellors, it builds confidence in how to provide appropriate support in these moments. The course is delivered by qualified Lifeline trainers in two parts that can be completed online: - 1 x 90-minute self-paced e-Learning module - 1 x 3.5-hour face to face workshop Community Connectors will be provided with referral and toolkit resources. For further information please contact Lifeline Melbourne [email protected] Online Workshop - 16th December 2020, 9am to 12.30pm See more

02.01.2022 Assistance with power bills On Tuesday the Victorian Government announced a once-off $250 Power Saving Bonus to help eligible households with their energy bills as a part of the Victorian Government’s Household Energy Savings Package. What is the $250 Power Saving Bonus? It's a once-off payment available to Victorian households with at least one JobSeeker, youth allowance recipient or pensioner. All pension types will be eligible and payments will be available from 1 Februar...y 2021 to 31 January 2022, limited to one per eligible household. Claims will be made through the Victorian Energy Compare website after 1st February 2021. More information will be available after the 24th November budget, so stay tuned :)

02.01.2022 Today is the National Day of Action to 'Raise the Rate for Good'. At Southern Peninsula Community Support we know how difficult it is to get by on payments like Jobseeker; over winter we see people having to choose between heating their house or putting food on table - no one in this country should have to choose between heating or eating. How can we expect people to gain confidence and be ready to look for a job (when there are jobs again!) if they have been ground down by trying to get by on a less than $50 a day, or even worse, if they have become homeless because they can't afford their rent? If you would like to see change, please take action at the link. #RaisetheRate

01.01.2022 #Budget2020 has failed many people (women, older Australians, low-income earners, unemployed, asylum-seekers etc.) and missed opportunities to create jobs in social housing construction and renewable energies. We can't go back to the old level of JobSeeker, but there are no guarantees, this means many Australians are left teetering on the edge of the poverty line once again. We need to #RaisetheRateforGood! In the meantime, we are here for you. If you or someone you know needs help, call us 5986 1285, Mon-Fri, 10am-2pm.

01.01.2022 Great news! We have been successful in securing a grant to upgrade our pantry with a cool room and other storage options. After 10 months in Memorial Hall we have returned to our main centre, which means downsizing due to space limitations. These funds mean we will have double our old capacity so we can accept more of your donations and support clients more often! Thanks to the Victorian Government's Community Food Relief Fund & to Chris Brayne MP for his advocacy for greater funding for our work
