30.04.2022 { 5 MIN STORYTIME BREAK } - Many of our clients have travelled the famous Alaska Railroad. Stepping aboard this train is like stepping back in time. Rewind back to 1903, when the construction of the famous Alaska Railroad had just begun in Seward, Alaska. Twenty years later, the "golden spike" went in just outside of Fairbanks in the tiny town of Nenana! These tracks flow through the Alaskan history books on an educational expedition, as you pass through each town, ask the st...aff about its significance. Today, wherever you board this blue and gold beauty, you’re in for a treat! The Coastal Classic train promises spectacular scenery as it hugs the coast between Anchorage and Seward, and the Denali Star train travels between Anchorage and Fairbanks, stopping at Talkeetna and Denali along the way. On the way to Denali from Anchorage keep your eyes open for magnificent 23,310 ft Mt. Denali (often hiding behind the clouds it’s so high!) Happy Friday, everyone! Nat :) PS... here's a great article we found on the Alaska Railroad, enjoy!

25.01.2022 [Day 5: CESIS] We journeyed north from Riga into the stunning Latvian countryside (we all couldn't believe how beautiful it was) to reach the tiny medieval town of Cesis (pronounced 'tsesis'.) Here we met our fabulous local guide, Regina, who was in traditional costume and was straight from the 13th century! The sun was shining and we had a grand tour of the castle. The afternoon was spent meandering through these DIVINE streets. Red roofs, tiny windows, and these dreamy co...bblestones... don't you just wonder what they have seen, the stories they could tell?! The construction for Cesis Castle began in 1209s, just three years after the town was founded. We stayed one night here and it was so peaceful and calm. But despite the town being so small, the flurry of activity come night time was incredible! People coming out of the woodworks, going for dinner, having drinks... it was a gorgeous and inspiring experience. :) Next stop... Tallinn, stay tuned ;) Nat xo

24.01.2022 I love this. So often, even on our travels we can get caught up checking social media, posting this photo and updating that. Imagine a trip to a place SO remote and wild, you can't even check your phone. ;) Image via Pinterest

22.01.2022 Preparing for our Scandinavia and Baltics tour which departs Melbourne in 2 weeks... We'll be travelling through Sweden, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Norway and Denmark, so follow our adventures on instagram! The weather in Stockholm has gone up 5 degrees to 7 celsius today! Here's to a new adventure! :)

21.01.2022 [STEP BACK IN TIME] Stockholm, Sweden. Well, I never knew this... but Stockholm's name derives from the words "stock" (log) and "holm" (islet) in acknowledgement of the city's distinctive bridges and waterways. Isn't that interesting?! Its architectural history had its beginnings in the mid-13th century with the construction of the fortress in Gamla stan, Stockholm's gorgeous Old Town. A significant event in Stockholm's early history was the Battle of Brunkeberg on October ...10, 1471. Fought between the Swedes and Danes, the battle initiated a long and vengeful history between Sweden and Denmark. Now called Norrmalm, the Brunkeberg battleground occupies a central part of modern Stockholm. Three years after a particularly violent bloodbath between the two warring entities in 1520, King Gustav Vasa rose to the throne of Sweden. He is credited with having had a great impact on Stockholm's development into a major European city, declaring the city an independent monarchy with Stockholm as its capital. The title was made official in 1634. Stockholm is the very first destination on our Scandinavia and Baltics Tour, beginning in just a few weeks on May 7. :) Nat xo Image via Pinterest Info taken from https://www.flysas.com/us/Destinations/stockholm/history/

21.01.2022 [TUESDAY FUNNIES] Some hilarity for your day! During the cold winters, the Alaskan Wood Frog becomes a frog-shaped block of ice. It stops breathing, and its heart stops beating. When Spring arrives the frog thaws and returns to normal going along its merry way. How funny is that?! :):) https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/379498706083454997/

21.01.2022 WOW. Introducing Haines, Alaska. One of our dreamy 'off the beaten path' destinations on our Alaska Canada itineraries. We still have spaces on our June and August Group Tours. Our Information Session is TOMORROW at 10:30am = come along! More details here: http://www.spectrumholidays.com.au/information-sessions :) Pic via https://au.pinterest.com/pin/361695413801495569/

20.01.2022 [Day 8: HELSINKI] We arrived in Helsinki after two days in gorgeous Tallinn (exploring the old town which was like something out of a fairytale! All the pastel coloured buildings were divine!) We were introduced to beautiful sunny Helsinki on a 4 hour tour around this waterfront city. The Fins love their sun... when it comes out! Which is why this 3 leveled sun deck by the water is so popular (pics 1 + 2!) The Esplanadi is a gorgeous tree-lined avenue with high-end shops eit...her side and a gorgeous walkway with grass areas down the centre for locals to enjoy. They love relaxing and enjoying life. The blooms were all out for us we walked down here on our "free afternoon." We also visited the "Rock Church" (Temppeliaukio Church), carved inside a rock. We were lucky to walk in just as a chamber music group began playing... so magical! So there we sat, surrounded by a striking wall of rock and taking in the beauty around us. Stunning! Our Finnish adventures began well... next stop Rovaniemi. :) Nat xo

17.01.2022 Inspiring words by Mr Hemingway. It's time for adventure :)

17.01.2022 [TUESDAY FUNNIES] These guys have finished work early and are ready to celebrate Christmas! 6 sleeps to go :) Wishing you a peaceful day. Stop amongst the busyness and take a moment to reflect on this special season. :) xo

16.01.2022 [Day 3: RIGA] - What a beautiful and resilient city! The whole of Latvia carries such a sense of pride in their history and freedom. After a few freezing days in Stockholm, we arrived on the ferry into Riga to a day of sunshine (hoorah!) We explored the streets of magnificent art nouveau architecture before wandering the old town. We passed by a violinist who was so talented we all stopped, our guide told us she actually plays with Andrea Bocceli when he comes to town, and ...loves sharing her music with everyone on the street. I think I stood there with my mouth open when I heard this! A wonderful highlight was stumbling upon a local Latvian restaurant, where no English was spoken. We ordered off the menu, not really understanding, but it was one of the most incredible moments! Communicating without language is a very special experience. Riga you were a great treat for us all. Nat xo

16.01.2022 [STEP BACK IN TIME] Skagway, Alaska."Skagua" was the Tlingit name, which means "the place where the north wind blows." The first non-Native settler was Captain William Moore in 1887. He is credited with being the first white man to use the White Pass route between Skagway and the interior. In August 1896... gold was discovered in the Klondike region! The following summer they came, the first boatload of prospectors landed at Skagway. By October 1897, according to a Northwest... Mounted Police Report, Skagway "had grown from a concourse of tents to a fair-sized town with well-laid-out streets and numerous frame buildings, stores, saloons, gambling houses, dance houses and a population of about 20,000!!!" 5,000 stampeders alone landed in February 1898 (woah!) Two trails were used by the gold seekers to reach the headwaters of the Yukon River. The 33-mile-long Chilkoot Trail began at nearby Dyea; and the 40-mile White Pass Trail began at Skagway and paralleled the present-day route of the White Pass & Yukon Route railway (WP&YR). Thousands of men carried supplies up the Chilkoot Trail, which was too steep for horses, or took the 40-mile White Pass trail to Lake Bennett, where they built boats to float down the Yukon River to Dawson City and the gold fields, 500 miles distant. In 1898 a steam-operated aerial tramway was constructed on the steepest section of the Chilkoot Trail, which eased the burdens of those able to pay! This marvellous little town is a highlight on our Alaska and Canada tour. Many a story it's little streets hold!! :) Happy Monday everyone! xo Image via http://www.fodors.com/ http://www.explorenorth.com/al/history/skagway-history.html

15.01.2022 Who is loving this warmer weather at the moment? We are! And we are also loving planning our 2018 tours. Which of these tours would you LOVE to go on if you could? 1. Alaska Canada 2. Scandinavia & The Baltics 3. USA National Parks

14.01.2022 [STEP BACK IN TIME] Denali, Alaska. A gold prospector, William Dickey, named this glorious peak 'Mount McKinley' in 1896, after President William McKinley. The state of Alaska officially changed the name to 'Denali' (meaning 'the great one' in Athabascan) in 1975 and asked the federal government to do so too. However, when the park was tripled in size and renamed 'Denali National Park and Preserve' in 1980, the federal government retained the name 'Mount McKinley'. In 2015, ...the decision was made and the name was finally changed back to 'Denali'! 'Denali' stands at 20,310 feet (America's tallest mountain)... and since it's SO high it actually has its own weather! That's right! And because this is the case, unfortunately, the mountain is often covered with cloud. :( So if you don't see it the first time, you may just have to come back to Alaska. ;) Have YOU caught a glimpse of Denali?! If so, where were you? We hope you have a wonderful weekend! Nat xo Image via Pinterest http://www.livescience.com/40595-denali-mount-mckinley.html

14.01.2022 Hello and happy Tuesday from these little friends! They're harbour seals at Le Conte Glacier in Alaska. I took this photo of these icebergs 2 years ago, the turquoise was so bright and the ice was like glass. I actually couldn't believe my eyes. Come along with us in July or August and experience these wondrous sights. :) Have a great day! Nat

13.01.2022 ALASKA & YUKON TOUR INFORMATION SESSION Saturday 12th April 2018 @ 11:15am Summer Tour Departs => 20 Jun 2018 Fall Tour Departs => 01 Aug 2018 (Still spaces left)... RSVP if you would like to attend :)

13.01.2022 Who remembers the 90s classic "Northern Exposure?" Well, this is the tiny town of Talkeetna, which the town in the show was based on!! It's located halfway between Anchorage and Denali, with one main street lined with cute log cabins and local wares. Talkeetna has drawn many Alaskans who love a quieter, more simple lifestyle. Many of these folks love the adventurous and peaceful life "off the grid", with many living with no electricity or water. :) For some cute pics and to get a feel of the town click below. Enjoy!

12.01.2022 As we're enjoying (or avoiding!) the 38-degree weather here in Melbourne today, let's spare a thought for our Alaskan friends! It's 3 degrees Celcius in Anchorage today! -6 degrees in Fairbanks! And wait for it... -11 DEGREES in Chicken, Alaska! I think we can safely say it's wintertime over there!! ;) It may be FREEZING, but this gorgeous aurora borealis pic is what Fairbanks looks like this week! If you'd love to see Alaska in wintertime let us know, we can create something... pretty magical for you ;) Nat xo Thanks for the pic Only In Alaska, taken by the super talented @roykero.

11.01.2022 {DEPARTING SUNDAY} Preparing to lead our Fall group through the heart of Alaska and Canada. We have 13 great people in this group, it's going to be a wonderful adventure. I always love seeing people experience the magic of Alaska for the first time. If you have ever been on a tour with me, it will be like you are coming along for the ride! :) Nat xoxo

09.01.2022 Wrangell, Alaska... not many have heard of it but boy what a treasure to be discovered! Located on southeast Alaska's Inside Passage, it's a tiny town of 2400 wonderful people. Several 'now famous' people actually made their way through Wrangell in the past, including Wyatt Earp who served as a temporary marshall for 10 days while he and his wife, Josie, were on their way to the Klondike. Famous naturalist John Muir often wrote of his adventures in Wrangell. And let's not for...get Soapy Smith, the famed 19th century outlaw (one of the most notorious con men in the history of the West!), used to hide out in Wrangell when things were too hot for him in Skagway! This gorgeous town is peaceful, not touristy and a fabulous and unique way to experience the REAL Alaska. :) Nat xo Photography Charles Baxter http://www.panoramio.com/photo/116903940 http://www.wrangell.com/visitorservices/history-wrangell

08.01.2022 The White Pass Yukon Rail Road in Skagway is one of the highlights of our Alaska Canada tours. We get to travel along the very track the prospectors hiked back in 1896 trying to strike gold in the Klondike Gold Rush in Dawson City. What a tough road that must have been for them, trekking 110 miles in the snow, and all the while carrying one tonne of goods! All in the name of GOLD! So this very track is now a wonderful railroad allowing thousands to take a step back into history :)

08.01.2022 Don't forget our FREE Information Session (Virtual Tour) of Alaska and the Yukon is tomorrow! Saturday 9th December at 10:30am at our offices. 511 Whitehorse Road, MItcham :) Please RSVP below if you'd like to join us. Nat xoxo

08.01.2022 [Day 10: ROVENIEMI] We were a few hours from Rovaniemi from Helsinki when we began seeing the specks of snow. Oohs and aahs were the magical responses from our group and the cameras began snapping away at lightning speed... little did we know we were heading into a snowy winter wonderland and our "little piles of snow" would fade into insignificance! Still... the childlike wonder was so fun to embrace! This is the view from our hotel, Rantasipi Pohjanhovi, the first hotel ...in Lapland. We loved seeing these ice sheets floating down the river -- such a wondrous sight! We learnt the hotel was built in 1936 and played host to many elaborate and fancy parties, before sadly being destroyed in WW11, along with the rest of Rovaniemi. After the war, hope was not lost. The gorgeous riverside town was reconstructed to a plan by Alvar Aalto, with streets laid out like reindeer antlers! (See story attached) Next stop... Inari :) Have a wonderful day, friends! Nat xo

08.01.2022 If you (or anyone you know) would love to be part of our next small group Scandinavia and Baltics Tour let us know and we can send you a brochure! Or you can sign up for our next info session. Have a lovely day! Nat :) http://www.spectrumholidays.com.au/information-sessions

06.01.2022 [Day 12: INARI, FINLAND] Today was a BIG day! We crossed the Arctic Circle (a latitude of 663339") AND visited Santa in his home! (Just your average morning lol!) So we continued north through Finland to Inari = with a latitude of 6854'21.46"N! I think this was the furthest north many of us have been! (Including those of us who have flown to Coldfoot, Alaska!) More and more snow appeared as we travelled through the gorgeous Lapland countryside, and we began spotting many r...eindeer friends along the way. it was so magical! After learning all about the different Sami cultures, we had a treat as we pulled up at Hotel Kultahovi, a huge group of women and children were celebrating, all dressed in traditional Sami costume, see pics below. (I'm sure they knew we were coming ha!) The following day we visited the Inari Sami Museum... then I surprised everyone and took them to a reindeer farm! This was definitely a highlight. We fed Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen and gave them a special word of encouragement ready for their big adventure in December! ;) Then we had tea and coffee and afternoon tea in a traditional hut, it was quite an experience! "It won't get dark around here until mid-August." This is what we were told by many locals! Yep, 24 hours of sunlight is what they are used to around here. This sunset image below was taken at 10:30pm at night! Next stop... we board the Hurtigruten Ferry :) Have a beautiful weekend! Love Nat xoxo

04.01.2022 We are setting up our Christmas Window today :) 20 sleeps to go! Come and take a FREE "Virtual Alaska Yukon Tour" This Saturday 9th December at 10:30am at our offices. RSVP below :) Nat xoxo

04.01.2022 Some of our friends enjoying their lunch! This is what you get to see on our "REAL Alaska Tours"; stunning wildlife, up close and personal. Come join us in Alaska this August. There are still spaces available on our Fall Tour. :) (Photo by Andrew McMaster)

04.01.2022 [DAY 2: STOCKHOLM] This is Stockholm friends! The Old Town (Gamla Stan) is so beautiful. How gorgeous is Stortorget Square? We meandered into this square on our first morning around 9:30am after flying in from Australia at 7am. It was snowing and 2 degrees when we landed! (This photo was taken a few days later when the sun was out and it was 4 degrees = heat wave!) We had hot chocolate and cinnamon buns in the cafe at the bottom of the orange building in the middle (Chokladko...ppen) and this square was bare, not a soul in sight. We loved this city for it's rich history, beautiful architecture (these colours!) and gorgeous people (who are suuuuper stylishly dressed by the way.) We then went on a tour "Under the Bridges" of Stockholm, and saw a completely different side of the city. What a wonderful start to our Scandinavia and Baltics Tour. Stay tuned for more to come... Nat :) xo

03.01.2022 Only 5 months until our fabulous National Parks Tour sets off! 01.01.2022 [STEP BACK IN TIME] : 1883 marks one of the most prestigious years in Canadian history. Besides Canada's first transcontinental railroad reaching successful completion, 3 railroad workers stumbled across a series of hot springs on the lower shoulder of the present-day Sulphur Mountain. After various heated ownership disputes, the springs and it's surrounding areas were labelled Canada's first national park by 1885. This is the stunning view of Banff from Sulphur Mountain... i...n the bottom of the image you can see the 'castle-like' Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, the elegant 250-room built under the direction of William Cornelius Van Horne, in 1888. Even if you don't stay at the Banff Springs, it's definitely worth a look. A drink on the terrace overlooking the Banff Springs Golf Course is simply spectacular as thousand-year-old jagged peaks watch over you from above. Suddenly you begin to feel quite small as you realise the magnitude and history of these new rocky friends. Our first Alaska/Canada tour departs on May where we will travel to Banff, Alberta before heading to Vancouver, British Columbia on the Rocky Mountaineer. :) Have a lovely day!
