04.01.2022 BULLYING AND HARASSMENT IN eSPORTS It seems to be the time of year when, perhaps through the frustration of being in lockdown for a number of weeks, improper comment is starting to rear its ugly head online, in particular through eSports events. Back in 2017, Speedway Australia introduced a standardised process for dealing with potential social media misconduct within the sport. The aim was to ensure consistency in penalties, with a standardised set of rules by which all c...ompetitors, crew and officials may be held to account. We’ve unfortunately put some people through the Social Media misconduct process outlined in the rulebook owing to serious cases of in-game abuse, sometimes with those abusive comments continuing through Private Messaging well after the eSports event has concluded. In some instances, this has resulted in competitors being excluded from an event, from the league, with the most severe cases of continued abuse to date, resulting in a 1-month suspension of their Speedway Australia licence. We are happy to keep dealing with the problem for as long as it takes to eradicate this kind of behaviour from the sport. Speedway Australia encourages participation and friendly discussion in eSports events and online social media, provided it stays in a positive manner. The accessible nature of the internet, however, often lends itself to individuals posting threatening and derogatory material in the heat of the moment. Complete details of the Social Media rules can be found on page 67 of the current rulebook, and the picture below. We remind all competitors, if you have any problems with bullying and harassment in eSports events, please forward details to the Speedway Australia eSports Facebook page via the messenger tab - don't take matters into your own hands! #bekind #dontbeaporkchop
