18.01.2022 Netball and ankle injuries: Netball is one of the most popular team sports in Australia and one which unfortunately can lead to frequent visits to your physio. One of the most common netball injuries are sprains to the ankle. A sprain is defined as a tearing of the ligaments that connect bone to bone and help stabilise the joint.... Acute ankle sprains can result from a force being applied to the ankle joint which causes excessive range of movement at the joint. Rolling the ankle on landing is a typical netball injury where players are immediately aware of the condition and may hear an audible ‘snap’ or ‘pop’, due to the tearing or stretching of the ligaments. The immediate treatment of any soft tissue injury consists of the RICER protocol rest, ice, compression, elevation and referral. RICE protocol should be followed for 4872 hours. The aim is to reduce the bleeding and damage within the joint. The ankle should be rested in an elevated position with an ice pack applied for 20 minutes every two hours (never apply ice directly to the skin). A correctly sized compression bandage should be applied to limit bleeding and swelling in the joint. See your physio as soon as possible after the injury to determine the extent of injury and to advise on treatment and rehabilitation. Ref: Sports Medicine Australia

12.01.2022 Running injuries can be debilitating and frustrating, stopping you from doing what you enjoy the most. Spine and Body can help by diagnosing and treating your injuries to get you back on track, back running again. With most running injuries, you don’t need to completely stop running. At Spine + Body, we use 2D video running analysis to help identify biomechanical abnormalities related to your specific injury. Based on the findings, we use strategies such as Gait retraining ...to correct how you run in order to unload structures under excessive loading which may be predisposed to injuries. This is done in conjunction with manual therapy, There is no ONE perfect way to run, which is why we use specific cues in your assessment and injury to help you run pain free again. If you are a runner and have no injury, we can help optimise your running style to a more economical and effective one. Book an appointment with Gabriel for a running assessment to see how you can reduce injury and increase performance. Online bookings available. _____________________________________
12.01.2022 Stop scolling, breathe deeply! Our breath correlates directly with our mood, sporting performance and ability to carry out daily tasks. Many of us shallow breath and carry tension in our shoulders and thoracic spine which can inhibit our ability to deep breathe. Our Physio’s at Spine + Body can alleviate tension, free up your movement and teach you proper deep breathing techniques so you can breathe with ease. -Pro tip: Lay on your back to start, when you inhale, aim to expand and raise the stomach, on the exhale let the stomach fall. This is the beginning of diaphragmatic breathing.

10.01.2022 A foam roller is an essential tool to be used prior to a workout in order to limit soreness and tightness. 02.01.2022 A tradies’ health is their most important tool, yet Australian tradies experience some of the highest rates of injury and time off work compared to other workers. In fact, 3 in 5 serious workplace injuries involve a tradie, despite tradies making up only 30 per cent of the Australian workforce. The Australian Physiotherapy Association is encouraging all tradies, their employers and families to think about their health and take a few simple steps to prioritise their wellbeing at work. https://choose.physio/tradieshealth
