17.01.2022 Trailblazer Barbara Proctor, first African American woman to own an advertising agency, dies at 86 In 1970, Mrs. Proctor struck out on her own with the help of a U.S. Small Business Administration loan. By 1984, her billings had topped $12 million. President Ronald Reagan, in his State of the Union address that year, named her as an example of the American spirit of enterprise, recalling her rise from a ghetto to build a multimillion-dollar advertising agency in Chicago. ... She had been married to and divorced from Carl Proctor before she opened Proctor and Gardner Advertising and used her married surname for her business, she said, because it suggested that a man was participating in operations. Reflecting on her life, Mrs. Proctor remarked that she owed her determination, her successes and her resilience to her experience as a black woman who had grown up poor. I think blacks have a different acceptance of reality than white people, she once told the publication Working Woman. Were more realistic. There is less fear. ... The tick a symbol of affirmation, literally telling the consumer yes you can, Just Do It . Designed by Carolyn Davisdon in 1971 for $35. Phil Knight, co-founder, initially didnt like the logo. I dont love it, but itll grow on me. Almost a decade later, Davidson was invited to lunch where Phil Knight gave her Nike stock. 02.01.2022 The outdoor industry announced an increase of 10.7% on net media revenue year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, posting $221.2 million, up from $199.9 million for the third quarter in 2017.
