25.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member John Butkiewicz (Lacrosse). John Butkiewicz started playing lacrosse for Williamstown Lacrosse Club at the age of 11, developing into a player that world lacrosse recognised as the leading ‘face-off’ player of his era. Butkiewicz played for Victoria at the national titles eleven times from 1973 to 1989 and was voted the national championships MVP three times. He represented Australia a record five times at the World Series..., an event played every four years, between 1974 - 1990 and was voted the world’s best mid-field player in 1978 and 1982. John Butkiewicz was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1990 for his contribution to the sport of #lacrosse. 24.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Shane Warne (Cricket). Shane Warne is the most prolific wicket taker in Australian Test cricket history. In 145 Test matches he took 708 wickets at an average of 25.41. He took a further 293 wickets in one day internationals (av 25.73) to take the total of wickets taken for Australia beyond 1000. Shane set records continuously throughout his career - in March 2004 he became the first Australian (and the second bowler after... West Indian Courtney Walsh) to claim 500 wickets, in 2005 he became the first to pass 600 and, on Boxing Day 2006, he became the first to pass 700. Among the many accolades heaped on him, one of the most significant was that in 2000 he was nominated by Wisden as one of five Cricketers of the Century. 24.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Barry Cable MBE (Australian Football). Barry Cable was one of Australias greatest rovers. He excelled in Western Australia, winning three Sandover Medals as best and fairest in the Western Australian Football League, and was a dominating player in the Victorian Football League with North Melbourne in the most successful years in the clubs history. He was a skilful left-foot rover, with exceptional disposal and was known ...for his pinpoint handballing. From the moment he first played senior football with Perth in 1962, the small and nimble Cable showed that he was a natural. He was able to adjust his style to suit wet and dry conditions, and was always a rugged but fair competitor. Dr Ken Fitch has dedicated his working life to the field of sports medicine and in particular to the management and operation of Australian Olympic teams. For 40 years he has played a leading role in sports medicine. From the Olympic games of 1972 onwards he has served as a physician and from 1975 to 1984 he was the chief physician at each Olympics. Ken has written extensively o...n sports medicine, illustrated by more than 58 articles in preferred journals, 28 book chapters and has been editor of seven books. 23.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Legend, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson AC CVO MBE (Athletics). Marjorie Jackson first gained fame when she defeated reigning Olympic 100m and 200m champion Fanny Blankers-Koen a number of times in 1949, earning her the nickname the Lithgow Flash, after the New South Wales town where she lived. Marjorie won two Olympic gold medals and seven Commonwealth Games gold medals. Between 1950 and 1954 she won every state and Australian title ...she contested for the 100yds, 100m, 220yds and 200m sprints (six in total). During her athletic career she broke world sprint records on ten occasions. She became the first Australian female runner to break a world record and the first Australian woman to win an Olympic athletics gold medal. In fact she was the first of either gender to win gold on the track since Edwin Flack did so in 1896. Marjorie Jackson-Nelson was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985 as an Athlete Member and in 1995 she was elevated to Legend of Australian Sport for her contribution to the sport of #athletics. 23.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Tracey Wickham OAM MBE (Swimming). Tracey Wickham was probably the greatest Australian swimmer to never win an Olympic medal, instead her performances peaked in non-Olympic years - 1978 and 1982. In 1978 at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games, Tracey won the 400m and 800m freestyle events. In the 800m, she beat the world record time by an astonishing six seconds!... After retiring in 1980, her coach, and fellow SAHOF Member, Laurie Lawrence, inspired her to start training for the 1982 Commonwealth Games, to be held in her hometown of Brisbane. With only a few months of serious preparation, she repeated her 400m and 800m freestyle victories from four years earlier. also winning silver in the 200m freestyle. Bob Elphinston was a founding director of the National Basketball League and managed the Australian mens basketball team to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He was also founding president of the Australian Basketball Coaches Association. In 1991, Bob was appointed general manager for the Sydney Olympics 2000 Bid Company. His work was ultimately rewarded in 1993 when Sydney won the right to host the 2000... Olympic and Paralympic Games. 20.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Dr David Parkin OAM (Coach - Australian Football). Despite paying 211 games with Hawthorn and captaining them to the 1971 Premiership, David Parkins greater fame rests on his record as coach where the determination he had shown as a player was backed by an innovative and analytic mind. He coached Hawthorn through 1977-80, winning the Premiership in 78, then Carlton from 1981 to 1985, wining Premierships in 81 and 82. H...e coached the Blues again from 1991-2000 with a Premiership in 95. Between those terms he coached Fitzroy for three seasons. He was All-Australian coach in 1995. 20.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Rod Marsh MBE (Cricket). Rodney Marsh remains one of the most respected wicket keepers to have ever played international cricket. During a 14-year Test career he collected a then-world-record tally of 355 dismissals; the combination of his concentration, athleticism and highly skilled glove work earning him enormous admiration among spectators and fellow players alike. Marsh was nimble-footed and his capacity to move acro...batically to intercept errant deliveries and catches was a constant feature. He was an invaluable player for both WACA - Western Australian Cricket Association and the Australian Men's Cricket Team, and had an inextricable association with fellow SAHOF Member Dennis Lillee the dismissal caught Marsh bowled Lillee was recorded 95 times in Tests and is one of the famous dismissal lines in Australian cricket history. 20.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Kathy Watt OAM (Cycling). Kathy Watt made history at Barcelona in 1992 when she became the first Australian to win an Olympic cycling road race. While that victory was historic it was merely the highlight of a 20 year international career which encompassed two Olympic Games, six World Championship campaigns, and three Commonwealth Games. Fittingly she book-ended her long international career with victories in the road race... at the Oceania Games - at her inaugural appearance in 1987 and at her final appearance in 2007. Malcolm Speed has had a key role in the shaping of two sports basketball (notably at a national level), and cricket at both a national and international level. He was executive chairman of Basketball Australia and CEO of the NBL from 1980 to 1997, a period which is widely seen as the sports golden age in Australia and in 1997 was recruited to become CEO of the Australian C...ricket Board, where once again, his leadership was marked by both on field success for Australia and sound administration. In consequence, in 2001 he was invited to become CEO of the International Cricket Council based in London, a position he held until 2008. Born and bred on the Gold Coast, Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew was instrumental in pioneering surfing, helping establish the world tour in the mid 1970s. Renowned as a master of the tube and with an almost cavalier approach to big waves, Bartholomew took out the 1978 world professional title. He was rated in the top five in the world for eight consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1983 and remains ...revered as one of surfing’s fiercest competitors and greatest strategists as well as one of its most flamboyant characters. 18.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Tom Carroll (Surfing). Tom Carroll joined the IPS World Tour in 1979 after twice winning New South Wales titles (Schoolboys in 1974 and Juniors in 1977) and the prestigious Pro Junior (1977 and 1980). Carroll locked into the top five in 1982 and wouldn’t budge until the decade was out. He attacked all conditions with precision and power. During his 14 year tenure on the world tour, he accumulated 26 victories, finished in ...the top five nine times and never wavered as the most powerful surfer on earth. Recognised for his great consistency in championship events, he was the world leader in the number of man-on-man heat victories and career finals. He won at least one senior tour event each season for 10 consecutive years (1982 to 1991), and shares the record for 23 consecutive man-on-man heat wins. 18.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Allan Moffat OBE (Motor Racing). Allan Moffat was an icon of Australian touring car racing during one of its most competitive eras, winning 32 of his 100 starts between 1965 and 1989. A winner of four championships, he won two of Australia's biggest races, Bathurst and Sandown, four times and six times respectively. He and his friend, arch-rival and fellow SAHOF Member, Peter Brock are the only drivers to have won Bathurs...t in both its 500 mile and 1000 kilometre formats. Moffat’s impact went well beyond the winner’s podium. He brought a new level of business professionalism to motor racing, pioneering the use of sponsorship in a way that would change the sport forever. 17.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Mark Woodforde OAM (Tennis). Mark Woodforde won his first Grand Slam doubles victory partnering John McEnroe in the US Open in 1989, but from 1992 onwards partnered compatriot Todd Woodbridge in one of the most successful mens doubles combinations in history. Together they won 11 Grand Slam titles, including five successive Wimbledon titles from 1992 to 97 and another in 2000. Mark also won five major mixed doubles title...s. He represented Australia in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, winning gold and silver in the mens doubles and in played in three Davis Cup finals (93,99 and 2000) the most notable being the 1999 final against France which gave Australia its first Davis Cup victory in 13 years. 17.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Bob Dwyer AM (Coach - Rugby Union). Bob Dwyer was the man who, in 2002, lifted the Waratahs to their first ever Super 12 championship play-off. Dwyer has been enormously influential in world rugby for more than two decades. As a coach, Dwyer guided Australia to victory in only the second World Cup ever played against England at Twickenham in 1991. He was in charge of the Wallabies for ten years, coaching 74 Tests and 144... matches overall, winning 99 of them. The Video Challenge will be officiated by Barton himself, alongside a panel of the world's most exciting young surfers including Jack Robinson, Kyuss King, Vahine Fierro, Mahina Maeda and Eli Hanneman. Grommets can upload and submit as many videos as they want via www.blblastoff.com.au throughout the event, u...ntil October 31. As Barton himself says Our motto at BL Blast Off has always been that we Coach kids not judge them, and the focus has always been around improving and getting better not winning and losing. In that same way the video challenge is for everyone, not just the rippers but any kid who is stoked on surfing, we wanna see that stoke and then help the kids to improve.. 17.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member Kostya Tszyu (Boxing). Kosta Tszyu was already world amateur champion when he migrated to Australia from Russia in 1992, but it was after he turned professional that the boxing world began to really take note. He won the IBF World Junior Welterweight title in 1995 defending it four times before losing in 1997. In 1998 he won the WBC title and the following year became the first man in 30 years to unite the title by winnin...g the WBA title and regaining his IBF crown. He retained the united title until 2005. Ring magazine voted him best super lightweight of the decade. Alisa Camplin leapt to fame in 2002 with two triple-twisting double somersaults that won her the aerial skiing gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City Australia’s first ever skiing gold. Over the next year she confirmed her stature with a world-record, a World championship title and a remarkable seven victories in a single World Cup Grand Prix series. For many however..., her greatest triumph was a bronze medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Italy. Recovering from a series of serious injuries she won her medal having had just 20 days jumping on snow in the previous two years. Even though he played in an era when South Melbourne had little success, Robert John Skilton made a huge impact on the game. Her successive wins at the International Aerobic Federation World Aerobic Championships in 1993 made her the only woman of her time to ever successfully defend a world title. Robert Windle represented Australia at three successive Olympic Games Rome in 1960, Tokyo in 1964 and Mexico City in 1968. He turned in one of the most courageous Olympic swimming victories in Australia’s history to hold off the world’s best 1500m swimmers to collect gold at the 1964 Tokyo Games. Professionalism, dedication and a steely determination have driven a career where Louise Sauvage has received universal acclaim. This was formalised in 2000 when the inaugural Laureus World Sports Awards - known as the Oscars of sport - named her World Sports Person of the Year with a Disability. That same year, she was given the honour of lighting the cauldron at her home Paralympic...s in Sydney, where she won two gold medals and a silver and was largely responsible for elite Paralympic athletes earning the public respect and admiration that their able-bodied counterparts enjoy. She carried the flag leading out the Australian team at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony four years later. In a career that began at age 16 at the International Paralympic Committee World Athletics Championships in 1990 until she retired after the Athens Paralympics in 2004, she was a dominant force. 06.01.2022 This year marks 60 years since the Australian Equestrian Team won gold at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games. The team were the first to achieve medals for Australia in Equestrian events, but the medals didn't come without some difficulty; Brian Cragos horse had broken down at the end of the second day. Bill Roycroft had been concussed in the cross-country phase when Our Solo had fallen on him and he was airlifted to hospital in Rome. Through all of that, the team triumphed! A brilliant five-eighth or centre, Bob Fulton played 263 first grade matches 213 for Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, and 50 for Eastern Suburbs and held the distinction of never having played reserve grade. In all, Fulton scored 129 tries for Manly a club record at the time before leaving to join Easts (the Sydney Roosters) in 1977. He captain-coached Easts in 1979. Retiring as a player th...e same year because of a shoulder injury, he nonetheless stayed on as coach until 1982. Fulton made two Kangaroos tours, in 1973 and 1978. He captained Australia in 1978, participated in four World Cups - in 1968, 1970, 1972 and 1975 and played in three Manly premiership winning teams, in 1972, 1973 and 1976. In the early 1980s some acclaimed Wally Lewis as the best player the game had ever seen, while others would portray him as a controversial figure that should be cut down to size. By the end of that decade, there would be unanimous agreement after a career of countless highlights for his clubs, Queensland and Australia. Lewis represented Queensland in thirty-one State of Origin games from 198...0 to 1991, and was captain for thirty of them. He also represented Australia in thirty-three international matches from 1981 to 1991 and was national team captain from 1984 to 1989. He is perhaps best known for his State of Origin performances, spearheading Queensland's dominance in that competition throughout the 1980s. He won a record 8 man of the match awards.
