23.01.2022 Including a drainage gravel blanket beneath a rootzone sand layer facilitates the accumulation of water at the interface of the two material layers. This phenomenon is known as a Perched Water Table (PWT) profile. This phenomenon is not unusual and if handled properly, can be greatly beneficial for your natural turf field of Play. In this news blog post, Jarrod Hill and John Neylan uncover what is a perched water table and explain why and how it helps improving your overall... natural turf performance. 21.01.2022 Winter sports can cause significant damage on natural turf fields due to wet soil conditions which in turn reduces grass growth therefore slowing down recovery from wear. In these conditions, the design & installation of a sand slit drainage system for your Field of Play maybe the answer. But do you know why? In this new article, our Senior Agronomist John Neylan talks about the advantages of such a solution and shares some tips regarding choosing the right sand slit drainage system: https://bit.ly/3nESuKn #naturalturf #drainage #sandslit
20.01.2022 The construction of the two synthetic pitches for Manningham Council at Pettys Reserve in Templestowe is underway. In collaboration with Turf One and Smart Connection Consultancy, the western pitch has been designated as the main pitch, while the eastern pitch has been designed to welcome MiniRoos games. Cameron Nayar, SPORTENG Civil Engineer responsible for this project, says: This massive level difference required designing retaining walls throughout the site to accommodat...e the proposed Fields of Play. These walls retain the soil and help in implementing an eight-metre-high ball catch netting. On top of that, the existing terrain was mostly a fill site, creating challenges for retaining wall footings and pavement design. During the construction, we also had to remove massive tree stumps (unusually buried more than 8 meters underground!) and fight against bad weather Lot of challenges that we had to tackle along the way! 19.01.2022 Did you know that the drainage for many synthetic grass pitches happens beneath the surface? Drainage cells are located beneath the synthetic grass system and drains horizontally the field perimeter. From there, trench grate collects the run-off and conveys the stormwater to a raingarden via a pit and pipe network where it will be treated before being discharging into an adjacent creek. In collaboration with Smart Connection Consultancy, Turf One and the Yarra Ranges Council,... SPORTENG has designed the conversion of an existing natural turf field into a synthetic turf field. Part of this conversion was the installation of a drainage system such as described above and shown in the photos. #drainage #naturalturf #syntheticturf

08.01.2022 Do you know what a proof rolling is? In this project for Monash University, our civil engineer Cameron Nayar, in collaboration with Ground Science and A.S.Lodge Courts , revamped the existing universitys tennis courts to be compliant with ITF requirements. To build up these 8 new tennis courts with two netball courts overlay, SPORTENG first had to lead a soil assessment, as well as a proof roll of the subgrade layer. This step is crucial as it will determine if the subgrade... is suitable for the construction of the subsequent pavement layers. You can learn more about proof rolling and its role in any Field of Play construction phase here: https://bit.ly/31qsFp1 #proofroll #tenniscourt #sportsdesign

05.01.2022 Its not every day that you get an elite athlete enquiring about work with your company... Via the Australian Cricketers' Associations Beyond the Boundary transition program, former professional cricketer Cameron Stevenson approached SPORTENG about joining post wrapping up his domestic cricket career. Having completed his degree in civil engineering, Cameron was looking to stay connected with the sport he loved while also developing a career in consulting. Fast forward 2-ye...ars and Cameron has become an integral part of the team. Working within the 3D and drainage teams initially, Cameron has continued to expand his skillset and has started to project manage projects as well. Earlier this year Cameron represented the USA in a couple of international cricket tournaments and fingers crossed will re-join them again when COVID passes. 03.01.2022 Monash University Clayton trusted SPORTENG to investigate the failing of the recently resurfaced acrylic tennis courts. After investigation, we discovered that this failure was due to uncontrolled fill pushed over from the existing embankment during the initial construction. To solve this issue, our Civil Engineer Cameron and Field of Play Consultant Aella worked closely with Ground Science to develop a pavement with a bridging layer and a long design life. ... However, heavy rains over the summer and winter worsened the conditions. Ground Science, AS Lodge and SPORTENG worked hand in hand on a subgrade remediation to counter these environmental challenges. This subgrade remediation includes removal of soft spots, Tensar Geogrid (advanced geosynthetic product specifically designed for trafficked surfaces), sacrificial rock layers and lime stabilisation.
