24.01.2022 The information picked up on a survey can also assist in the correct calculations for work on #greens, #fairways, #ovals or #pitches. If you know the exact size of an area you can accurately calculate the cost of renovation works, the amount of fertiliser to apply or the amount of pesticides to apply. Rather than just estimating the area. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

24.01.2022 The hydrophobic behaviour of this rootzone sand is the bane of any turfgrass manager. Ultimately, soil penetrants/adjuvents may be required to change the surface tension of this material to allow water to enter the profile for plant uptake. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

23.01.2022 Excessively high salts and chloride are highly detrimental to turf grasses, particularly during establishment. #STRIgroup #STRIaus #sports #turfgrass #golf #football

22.01.2022 Want to see how your #grounds are faring post-winter? Aerial images provide an uninterrupted perspective and are also a great way to identify struggling #turf which may have #disease. It can provide both good images of your grounds and quantitative NDVI data. #STRIgroup #sport

22.01.2022 "Even on courses where there are greater depths of topsoil, protecting fairways should still be seriously considered. High levels of winter play can result in heavily divoted, weak fairway areas the following Spring." Here is the second instalment of technical notes, this time on winter #fairway protection. #golf #sport #turf #grass

19.01.2022 Infrastructure installation is well underway at the Silcock Reserve re-development, Ringwood. The centre #cricket wickets are being formed and irrigation installation has commenced to ensure grassing deadlines are met for club use in 2021. The sportsfields will be a great asset for Maroondah City Council and local community use. #sportsfielddevelopment #localcommunity #turf #turfgrass

19.01.2022 The Trueness Meter is a great quantitative assessment tool used on greens to measure smoothness and trueness. By gaining an objective measure of ball roll quality greenkeepers can use this data to support the decision-making process to optimise playing quality. SportsTurf Consultants STRI Group have undertaken these assessments at numerous golf courses throughout Australia and are of great benefit to our clients. #STRIgroup #Agronomy #turf #greenskeepers #sport

19.01.2022 We have recently completed a geotechnical investigation of the soil profile below a few greens and fairways. Here's some footage of the mechanical drill being used on a fairway. (A hand auger was used on the greens to reduce the impact on the surface.) #STRIgroup #STRIaus

15.01.2022 Topdressing, rolling, verticutting, grooming and brushing all ways to improve #greenspeeds. Our fifth technical note addresses the implementation of all of these techniques while maintaining minimal adverse effects. 15.01.2022 It’s moments like these when worldwide travel is restricted that you remember back to memorable experiences. Here was a visit to a #turf farm in #Chengdu, the turf farmworkers hand weeding the paddock. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

14.01.2022 While #turfgrass dormancy cannot be fully avoided in most circumstances, getting your #soil tested for a chemical analysis of nutrients annually will allow you to reduce the period of dormancy. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

14.01.2022 Sand installation has been underway at the Silcock Reserve for the Maroondah City Council, Victoria, with the grassing of stage 1 expected to commence this week. #sportsfielddevelopment #STRIgroup #STRIaus #sports #agronomy #turf #turfgrass

13.01.2022 In this time of Covid-fuelled anxiety, it is easy to forget the wonder of humanity and our ever-expanding progress and success. This is Ras Al Hamra Golf Club in Oman: an immaculate 12-hole golf club which is completely floodlit, allowing golf to be played at night. A real gem in the desert. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

12.01.2022 Black Layers often become evident in #winter indicated by a blackening in the profile & a rotten egg smell caused by anaerobic bacteria and may impact #turf health. Using good quality rootzone materials and cultural practices (including aeration & thatch control) will ensure that the turf profile drains freely and has good air exchange, thus reducing the potential for Black Layer to develop. #STRIgroup #STRIaus #turfgrass

10.01.2022 Here's some information about Red Thread, a treatable foliar disease. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

10.01.2022 Pictured is the African Black Beetle. Both adult and larvae can cause severe plant damage, however soil-dwelling third instar larvae (pictured) cause the most damage to turf by cutting roots below the soil surface. After two successive dry spring and summer periods, the number of African Black Beetles can reach plague proportions in the second year. ... Beetle densities in excess of 10 per square metre may result in significant damage, but control may be warranted with densities of five per square metre or less. Prior to applying insecticides or beneficial nematodes, get an understanding of population number in your turf profile. Grab a spade or treat some designated areas with soapy water to drive the grubs to the surface to do your counts. #STRIgroup #pest #turf #turfgrass #insecticides

10.01.2022 Many parts of #Australia have had above-average rainfall through the Autumn and Winter months, and this has exposed them to becoming excessively wet and in a poor condition for match play. The use of effective subsurface drainage systems is critical in assisting with usage levels of winter #sports play. Assistance in the design and specification of subsurface #drainage systems will allow your ovals to exceed participant expectations. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

08.01.2022 The Silcock Reserve project in Maroondah City Council is underway. The construction program will involve a moderate earthworks program, an extensive drainage system to suit this naturally wet site and a purpose-designed irrigation system to ensure efficient water application. The rootzone profile will be 150mm sand capping with a Santa ana grass coverage that will ultimately provide a great sporting facility for local community sports. #commmunitysports #STRIAus #STRIgroup #turf #sport

07.01.2022 Pictured is a glasshouse plant back trial to determine the safe interval between pre-emergent herbicide application and seeding. Efficacy & crop safety trials covering all aspects relating to a product’s usage including label claims & instructions are required for registration by the APVMA. #STRIgroup

07.01.2022 As we move towards the spring and summer period here in #Australia, it’s a kindly reminder the stresses root pathogens can place on fine #turf surfaces. Rhizoctonia sp is one such #root pathogen that requires both preventative and curative controls prior to the summer stress period. Accurate identification of root pathogens saves money and provides the necessary fungicide control program to be implemented before issues associated with #root and #grass health arise. #STRIgroup #STRIaus #agronomy #sport #golf #football

06.01.2022 Queensland Blue Couch side by side with hybrid Green Couch. An easy way to tell the difference is by peeling back the leaf to check the ligule located at the junction of the leaf and leafstalk. If the ligule is a thin membrane it’s Blue Couch, if there are fine hairs it’s Green. It's important to distinguish the difference as this has ramifications on labels rates for many herbicides. #STRIgroup #turf #turfgrass #sport #herbicides #sport

06.01.2022 It is critical that any sporting surface (hard or natural turf) is constructed on a stable base with good drainage. A poor base can result in rapid deterioration to the finished surface impacting on playability & safety, with a much-reduced lifespan.

05.01.2022 "With milder winters becoming the ‘norm’ the demand for year-round golf has increased together with the need of many clubs to ‘keep members happy’ while faced with the difficult economic environment currently being endured." This technical note about #golf winter play is the first in a series on turf management. Keep your eye out for the next instalment. #strigroup #striaus #golfcourse #greenkeeper

05.01.2022 As consultants, we visit #grounds all over the country. You’ll see here a picture of a fire ant nest found in south-east Queensland. One of our consultants was able to identify and report the nest after participating in a general fire ant awareness training session run by Biosecurity QLD. In our industry, it is important to be aware of #biosecurity threats particularly when they can be easily spread through the movement of machinery from one pitch to another. #STRIgroup #STRIaus #agronomy #turf #turfgrass #sport

05.01.2022 Equipment innovation is a great thing! These are from the installation of rugby posts at AAMI Park. The machine they use for the operation is fascinating: it grabs the post horizontally from a trailer, then lifts it high into the air, rotates the post vertically and fits the post into the ground. We were surprised by the scale of the task for Justin Lang and his team. #STRIgroup #STRIaus

03.01.2022 Excessive sand topdressing can be detrimental to the turfgrass sward. A general guide is to apply a maximum of 5mm, making sure the sand is brushed off the leaf afterwards. #STRIgroup #STRIaus
