25.01.2022 Our virtual excursions have cultivated a community of learners, a community that walks together, a community of thinkers, who are discovering questions and constructing knowledge together. The childrens gallery is a display of childrens visions of their community, seeing Springvale through the eyes of children.

24.01.2022 Today we took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, kindergartens, early childhood centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year celebrates the 20th year of this event which promotes the value of reading and literacy as well as adding an element of fun, colour and vibrancy. Whitney and Britney The Chicken Di...vas written by Lucinda Gifford was this years book. Many of you would have seen the colourful book in your childs classroom, but today we joined together to be part of this national event. As you can see we had lots of fun!! Take time out to read along with Jen - enjoy!
24.01.2022 Excursions are a huge part of our curriculum at Springvale Service for Children. The pandemic really made our teaching team think dynamically to continue this aspect of the program. Virtual excursions have been really popular and provoked the children to ask questions and clarify what they notice in their community. Excursions didnt stop, they just felt a little different. Walking through Springvale through the eyes of children.

23.01.2022 Today at SSC we launched My Family Lounge by holding a family breakfast and information session. The wonderful app allows the streamlining of our enrolment process, and assists families in easily changing and maintaining their child and family details anywhere, anytime that may suite them! What a wonderful way to connect with families through an innovative parent portal.
22.01.2022 ‘Zoom’ a new concept that has enabled connection, when our means of communication have been limited. For children ’Zoom’ has bought about many ideas and connotations, evolving around language, magic and movement. After recently receiving a letter and gift from Wee Care kindergarten in Bondi, we wanted to send a Zoom meeting invite, so that we could meet all the children and teachers. The invite inspired children’s ideas of how ‘Zoom’ works.

21.01.2022 After receiving a special act of kindness from a kindergarten in Bondi NSW, we are returning these well wishes. The children have made beautiful friendship pebbles with a small message of thanks. These will be sent along with a picture of SSC and a collaborative piece of art that the children made before stage 4 lockdown. We are very excited to be sharing these messages of hope to another part of Australia.
21.01.2022 After 6 weeks of working from home and on-site, our educators have been able to reflect on current practices, review policy, work on areas of our QIP and be inspired to enhance their professional knowledge to ensure better outcomes for children. We are so very proud of the ongoing commitment and resilience of our team during a very difficult time.

21.01.2022 Calmer Kindergartens webinar training -Professional learning opportunity for our educators to consider how trauma can have an adverse effect on childrens learning and development, especially in todays climate. A wonderful way to share practice and experience across the sector.
19.01.2022 "The history making session saw early years professionals from across the Southern Melbourne Area come together online to reflect and celebrate how COVID-19 has positively changed the way services engage with children & families", and Springvale Service for Children were a part of this virtual group of 160 participants. Well done to our very own celebrities Karla, Jen, Asa and Shaing dar. SSC were selected to be a part of a video reflecting and their response to COVID-19 along with 3 other services. 19.01.2022 In times of uncertainty, it is normal for children and family members to have strong reactions such as feelings of sadness, irritability or anxiety. As educators it is so important to be in tune with how children are feeling, especially during the recent pandemic. At Springvale Service for Children we have been incorporating yoga and meditation into our curriculum. Today we encouraged families to take a wellbeing kit with them, so that they could continue this while they are at home. We hope all our families stay safe, and for those that we may not see for a few weeks take care. From all the team at SSC.
18.01.2022 A national plan has been activated to manage the virus and support our community.
16.01.2022 We want children to be healthy and happy, not just now but for the rest of their lives. And teaching them about meditation early can help them do just that, especially during the stresses of the recent pandemic. Here at SSC, children have been participating in meditation through stories and yoga everyday as part of the curriculum. The stories that have been used in the meditation have been developed by the children themselves, using their ideas and experiences over the day. ...Children have been going on mindfulness walks in our garden to inspire ideas for the stories, which have included things such as rainbows, flowers and birds. Our amazing educator Jill believes that offering children time to ‘just be’ and relax their busy minds has supported them to regulate emotions during this difficult time and enabled them to develop concentration, while also exploring an imaginary world through a sense of calm and stillness See more

14.01.2022 Its so important to continue to develop childrens first language because they will learn English more effectively if they continue to develop their first language at the same time. This will support children to become truly bilingual. Our Bilingual library is now in our foyer, so that we can engage our families to exchange books to take home. Also its an opportunity for our educators to read bilingual books with small groups of children.
14.01.2022 A babys brain is a remarkable little creature forming more than a million neural connections every second when activated. Babies learn through spending time with their parents and other special people in their life. Weve created Bobbie to show us all the emotions, thoughts and responses that happen in a childs brain when a baby experiences meaningful moments. These meaningful moments, especially if they occur early in a childs life and often, build strong brains, providing a strong foundation for their life. Download the Bright Tomorrows app today to receive access to over 1000 meaningful moments and tips to help build young brains. #thrivebyfive#. https://thrivebyfive.org.au/

11.01.2022 The thought of starting school can bring about many feelings for children, whether excitement or trepidation, the thoughts going through children’s minds over the next few months will be a consideration for many teachers. Here at SSC we have been asking children what they hope to see when they see their school for the first time. It’s quite enlightening to hear their ideas and feelings on the subject. It was very clear that their understanding was shaped by their growing ima...gination and also the influential people in their lives. The expectation to learn numbers, read books and play in the playground was very prominent in their conversations as well as the idea they will have to wear big kids outfits, have the opportunity to see animals and experience beautiful things. We will continue to learn more about the children’s feelings of starting school, while also connecting with our local schools to support children’s continuity of learning. See more
11.01.2022 Stop and pause at the beauty around you. Our virtual excursions have not only supported childrens sense of place, but have also invited opportunities for learning. A simple walk in the park can provoke curiosity, empathy, environmental responsibility and a chance to consider our own wellbeing.
11.01.2022 We have recently had an array of messages of thank you from our families, saying how much they appreciate our commitment and care during these difficult times. This has inspired us to create an acknowledgment station for families and children to document their appreciation for our educators.
11.01.2022 HIllarious What would your review be?

10.01.2022 Our commitment to Quality Improvement. It is important that all members of the SSC community have an awareness of the process and requirements of our self-assessment, how this informs, shapes and prioritises our ongoing commitment to quality improvement. Our display includes childrens, families and educators voices, showing the uniqueness of our service.
09.01.2022 Our virtual excursions took us on a trip to the train station and supermarket today. Being familiar with and having a connection to the community, provides an important relationship to the environment; promotes belonging, and a sense of identity and learning. What do you see, what do you think and what do you wonder about your community?
07.01.2022 Even though some of our educators are working from home, their teaching and learning doesnt stop. They continue to provide opportunities for children to learn at home, such as sharing a love of growing fruit.
07.01.2022 Books can be an amazing learning tool and something that has been very beneficial while children were learning from home. Have any of you heard the phrase’ going beyond the book?’ Well it’s a phrase I use a lot and I’m really not sure if I invented it or I’ve heard it or read it somewhere in my work. Story time can have different purposes and meanings for all of us as teachers, whether it’s for enjoyment, to provoke new learning or to assess existing learning. Whatever the r...eason, books ofter amazing opportunities to go further than the story itself. Recently, I had a discussion around the idea of developing a curriculum around a particular book. Some of you may have already heard or know about Fleers ‘conceptual PlayWorlds’ well, this idea is very similar to this concept. As a team we looked at a book called ‘Family’ by Aunty Faye Muir and Sue Lawson. This was quite timely as many of the children had returned after stage 4 lockdown, so ‘family’ was a great topic to unpack. Looking through the pages we could see many ideas that could shape our curriculum, however we really wanted to gain ideas from the children themselves first. ‘Going beyond the book’ starts with having an open mind and seeing the book through the eyes of the children. Rather than reading the book, we waited for children’s responses to the images and colours as we turned the pages. Occasionally we became the provocateur saying what do you notice or image if you were there, what would you do, think or feel? The information taken from the voices of the children were then used to create the curriculum. For instance, within the book there was a picture of a family gathered around a fire. The conversations amongst the children was about what they might be doing, however one child said I would feel warm and happy, everyone is happy. Feelings when we are with our family was a feature of our program that week. I’ve used the idea of ‘going beyond the book’ previously using the book ‘Ssh’ by Sally Grindley. I have to say that this is a book that has captivated children’s imagination over the years and been a big favourite for many, including the teachers themselves. When using this book I have used the idea of suspense with a hint of silliness to inspire and motivate learning. The use of I wonder and what do you think were questions I’d use and I’d even ask the children to think of other characters that could be in the book. It’s been quite enlightening to listen to the children thoughts and insights. ‘Going beyond the book’ is a great teaching strategy to use when assessing children’s comprehension and mean making skills, but it’s also really enjoyable to do more than just read the book. If you’d like to know more about Fleer’s Conceptual PlayWorlds here is the link-https://www.monash.edu/conceptual-playworld
06.01.2022 Today was the day to wear a mask at SSC, however this looked very different for some of us. Superheros and princesses were the preferred mask and how wonderful was that. #funmasks@SSC#
06.01.2022 While educators are putting all their energy into creating a positive mental health environment for children and young people, its also important to focus on the wellbeing of themselves. We have recently created a wellbeing space for educators to come and just be, relax and take time to reflect on their own feelings.
03.01.2022 Hey everyone, We just wanted to send out positive vibes and groovy moves to all our children, staff and our fellow educators. Enjoy! We challenge our SSC families and friends of the community to do the same!
01.01.2022 Using our deep knowledge of how children think, question and explore, we travel with them on a journey of self discovery. Today we ventured out into our beautiful natural surroundings, using technology to enhance our senses. What do you see? What do you think? What do you wonder? The possibilities are endless!!
