07.01.2022 Belgium's Tinne Gili was too strong for Australia's Sarah Cardwell (Pictured) Australian duo Donna Lobban and Sarah Cardwell competed strongly before dropping o...ut in the early rounds of the CIB Egyptian Open earlier this week. Cardwell dropped her match with Belgium's Tinne Gilis 3-0 on Saturday, while Lobban went down to the second-seeded Nour El Sherbini from Egypt in the second round. Gilis launched out of the box with an impressive first game 11-3 to have Cardwell on the back foot. The 18th ranked Belgium stormed away to take game two 11-2 before closing out the contest to win 11-4 Tinne Gilis (BEL) defeated Sarah Cardwell (AUS) 3-0 11-3, 11-2, 11-4 Lobban started the competition off in fine touch against Egypt's Menna Hamed. The 21st PSA ranked Australian dropped the opening game against the 52nd PSA ranked Egpytian 5-11 before storming back with a gutsy 14-12 win in the second game. Lobban continued the momentum into the third, winning 11-4 before Hamed powered home to take the fourth, 11-9 to set up a grand-stand finish in the fifth. Both players traded blows in a back-and-forth decider before Lobban got the edge that she needed to win 11-9 in a five-set classic. Donna Lobban (AUS) defeated Menna Hamed (EGY) 3-2 5-11, 14-12, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9 It was a tough second round for Lobban against the 2nd ranked player in the world, Nour El Sherbini of Egypt. Lobban went down to Sherbini in Chicago earlier this year in four games and was determined to step up the intensity and reverse the 3-1 result. Sherbini was too strong across the match, holding out Lobban in three games to advance to the third round. Nour El Sherbini (EGY) defeated Donna Lobban (AUS) 3-0 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 Sherbini easily accounted for Canadian Danielle Leourneau in the third round quite comfortably 3-0 and takes on India's Joshna Chinappa tomorrow night from 6pm (Egyptian time) in the Quarter Finals. #squashgirlscan #squashinaustralia #squashoznation
