23.01.2022 Happy World Paella Day from Squirrel Gully and our amigos at Sangria Spanish Tapas Bar, 3 Victoria Lane , Bendigo . Paella ( pronounced Pay-eh-ah ) has a history and tradition that stems from the Spanish region of Valencia although other regions have their own local variations. Near the coast, its usually cooked with seafood. Inland, they typically include Chicken , Rabbit and seasonal vegetables. My favourite thing about Paella is the communal way it is served, , although serving Paella on plates is perfectly acceptable , it is traditionally served in the middle of the table and everyone is encouraged to gather around and eat directly from the Caldero. The paella pan is mentally divided up into pie slices for each diner. You are not allowed to eat from anyone else's slice or break the barrier between your slice and the person next to you without permission. Interestingly , the size of the barrier is a pretty accurate indication of the relationship between neighbouring eaters. The smaller the barrier , the closer the eaters are. It reminds me of my philosophy that food does indeed bring people together. In theory , this will now be able to be trickle charged from a single solar panel. 06.01.2022 Last night while Drew and I had our feet up on the couch, we had a whooping 60ml of rain . Brilliant !!, we thought . Lots of rain to top up our rainwater tanks and fill the dams . ( It's always surprising to see how quickly the dams fill up after a good drop .)We didnt factor in the mischief caused on the bridge running over our gully . 02.01.2022 HOOGAHS VEGAN COCONUT AND LIME CAKE WITH MANGO SORBET AND SQUIRREL GULLY SAFFRON AND DESERT LIME WHIZZ FIZZ Yes , you read it right , its saffron flavored whizz fizz ! Take all your preconceived ideas about what you can and cant do with saffron and politely show them the door, they need not apply.... Food should be fun !...and this quirky little recipe made the big kid in me do a little happy dance when I wrote it. Use it to coat homemade Turkish delight in place of icing sugar, sprinkle it on ice cream, use it to frost the rim of a cocktail glass ( helllllloooo Friday night happy hour ) or use it to garnish a dessert plate as I have here with this vegan coconut and lime cake from Hoogahs pop up vegan bakery. Come into Hoogahs ( 4 Mitchell St , bendigo ) on Saturday between 9am and 3pm to find vegan choc caramel slices, vegan lemon meringue pies, savory vegan cauliflower mac and cheese pies, pulled jackfruit baguettes and a new addition...vegan raw strawberry cheesecakes. Many of Hoogah's bakery items are also gluten free !! Run, dont walk as they sell out fast. To make the Saffron and Desert Lime Whizz Fizz you will need : 1/4 teaspoon Citric acid 1/4 teaspoon Cream of tartar 3/4 teaspoon Bicarb of soda 6 tablespoons sifted icing sugar 1.5 teaspoon Desert Lime powder ( available online at www.bushfoodsshop.com.au ) 150mg Squirrel Gully Saffron Method : Mix the saffron threads with a tablespoon of icing sugar and grind the mix in a mortar and pestle. Chuckle while you reminisce about eating fairy bread and playing with Rubix cubes as a child of the 70's. Stop mid thought to add all the other ingredients into the mortar and pestle and blend thoroughly.
