24.01.2022 Baxter's adoption journey Baxter joined our rescue after being found wandering the bush and being in poor condition. Baxter spent his impound time under 'duty of care' as the rangers were worried about him as he was matted and distressed ... No one came for Baxter, so he became one of our rescue dogs No doubt Baxter was a challenge with his behaviour, he very stressed and confused after living on the run for who knows how long Slowly Baxter improved but he was a complex boy, he did not understand other dogs well and guarded his bed, his food and what became his beloved pink toy that he carried with him everywhere Baxter learnt food was coming twice a day, his bed was his, he didn't have to guard everything as if his life depended on it He showed huge separation anxiety issues and his howl and bark were impressive for his size With all that was Baxter we knew we had to be careful with the home he would go to because he could easily be too much for a home that couldn't meet his needs and understand his behaviours. We knew in the right home though he would make an amazing companion and thrive We didn't know how long it would take to find that home but we knew the wait would be worth it As luck would have it Baxter didn't have to wait very long. A potential home came along, we wrote an essay to ask this potential adopter if she was up for the challenge that could be a bumpy ride as he settled in We received an amazing email back that made us confident Baxter had a great chance and a great home with an amazing lady So four weeks have been and gone and this is the latest update 'Baxter has settled beautifully and is a happy, confident and playful little chap who is a terrific fit for me and for the mountains' Baxter has found his forever home with his forever human and Baxter is thriving

23.01.2022 Genie's surgery day Our heart hurts for Genie, we can only wonder what her life has been like for who knows how long. She is a sweet old girl who deserves only the best and no more hardship in life. Today was her surgery day and even though we know she needed this surgery.... It is hard to see the list of what she needed. We try to remember Genie needs our strength and love to get her through the following days. After 11yrs of neglect and producing puppies Genie was a bit worse for wear. Genie underwent a huge surgery today. A total of 2 and a half hours. She required full mammary strip removal due to multiple mammary masses. Thankfully her chest xray showed no signs of metastases. Genie has been desexed, so no more babies for her ever. The xray showed Genie's heart is enlarged. It has concerned our vets, so Genie has been started on heart medication. Her teeth were cleaned and any rotten teeth removed. The good news is that her comprehensive blood tests are all clear. So despite her previous life and a huge surgery today, Genie is now healing, with much needed pain relief onboard, a quiet room and comfortable bedding. Today has been huge for our girl, all has been necessary to address her health needs and one step closer to a fab future and being ready to find her forever home.

22.01.2022 Meet Pixie (one of the Fab 5) She is the most gorgeous girl imaginable. Sweet, cheeky and shy all at the same time Pixie is unexposed to the outside world and finds it all a bit daunting. There is no whipping her off and exposing her to all that life has to offer when the smallest thing is foreign to her ... Her comfort levels are small and we are slowly building up her confidence. Pixie has never walked on lead, let alone worn a harness, if let off lead she would never return If we were to throw her into the deep end of life whether it be a beach or a dog park we would set her back in gaining her confidence. Overwhelming her with such force that is doesn't make the experience pleasant, instead traumatising her further We need to be slow and deliberate in how we show her the way to a better life. Where she no longer has to fight for survival, that food is a regular thing and never in short supply. Not just used for breeding purposes, but where dogs are companions to us humans Guiding her to being better adjusted to life, so when she is ready to leave the nest she will cope and have a better understanding of world There is no quick fix, there is no magical cure. It takes a lot more than just love to help dogs such as Pixie (although she loves a cuddle or ten a day). Good intentions can be detrimental if we don't understand what she needs. Love and cuddles just aren't enough to undo her entire existence for 9 long years It is beautiful to see the smallest step towards becoming a beloved companion. How she is cautiously trying to play with the foster carer's dog Pixie is slowly learning so many new things at once and we know she will find an absolutely amazing home when she is ready. Our screening of potential homes is not left to chance but with the best interest of Pixie

17.01.2022 Suzie Q, Benji and Sir Walter Goldfish have been adopted together It has been the hardest news to keep quiet to allow for the 3 week trial period to be completed before announcing the adoption Benji and Suzie Q were a bonded pair and needed to find a home together. ... The most beautiful couple applied to adopt Sir Walter, we let them know some of his challenges and asked them to look at Benji and Suzie Q as a match for their home Instead of saying no to Sir Walter, or no to Suzie Q and Benji, we were asked if it would be possible for them to adopt all three Many phone calls were had, as changing from adopting one dog compared to 3 is huge. We all felt comfortable that this could work Just over 3 weeks later and many updates in between, we can confirm it has been the perfect match, for the perfect home, for the perfect couple to adopt these 3 beautiful dogs We couldn't be happier and have watched them progress in their forever home with their forever humans

13.01.2022 Mourning the loss of Gigi Our beautiful old girl rescued from a Sydney pound in February this year. Gigi was 16yrs old, had a pendulum mammary tumour, teeth so rotten they had caused holes up into her nasal cavity and decreased kidney function.... Our girl had suffered before arriving into care. It became clear early on that Gigi needed to going our Forever Care program where she could have all her needs met and for whatever time she has left that she would be loved unconditionally. Gigi underwent surgery and went on to thrive in care. Gigi was small but mighty, fragile yet strong in spirit. Gigi happily climbing up the stairs to the lounge and taking up prime position. Dinner time always meant it was time for Gigi to put in her order and bark her demands. Gigi had a wonderful 8mths in care with Anna and Ken. Sadly, on Saturday Gigi had a turn, as she was being rushed to the emergency vets Gigi passed away in Ken's arms. Leaving shock and grief in her wake. Anna and Ken are still trying to remember their little girl has gone, suddenly and without warning Their hearts are hurting and Gigi's spot in their home is empty, nothing feels right. We take on these old darlings, never being able to undo the damage of a life time, only able to give them every precious day. Holding fast to those memories as we mourn their loss. Run free at the rainbow bridge Gigi To Anna and Ken, our love and thoughts are with you during this time of grief

12.01.2022 Ollie's adoption journey Ollie arrived in our care late last year after finding himself in a pound unclaimed. To say he was a bit of a mess is an understatement We had been expecting an older dog, yet the vets put his age between 5-7yrs. He was just a young boy who had been totally neglected... He was emaciated, his skin was thick, void of hair in many places and infected. One of his patella's was virtually non-existent With a good diet Ollie started to put on some weight His skin was a huge challenge though and every time we seemed to be going in the right direction, we ended up two steps back Between exclusion diets, numerous medicated washes, injections and medication trials it was a hard and sometimes an emotional road to be travelling with Ollie Ollie had his luxating patella surgery, it was complicated and had our knowledgeable orthopaedic vet challenged, but he fixed it and Ollie could finally walk without pain. The wound site healed quickly and his patella was firmly in place Ollie never officially went up for adoption. Somewhere during the challenges Ollie gave us, the most lovely lady found Ollie's story and contacted us. We explained everything and that we could not predict when Ollie would be ready for adoption Not once did her commitment to Ollie waiver, her excitement just grew at time went on Finally the day came where he was ready, so between his carer and new forever human a date was set for a meet up. Added to this was a long drive for his forever human as the distance between them was great, but not once was this brought up as an issue. On meeting it was literally love at first sight and we knew Ollie had found his forever home. Ollie seemed to know this too. Ollie bonded quickly to his new doggy brother. Ollie also decided he was going to collect every toy he could find and placed them all around the room. He even decided a slipper was his and this was proudly carried it around as if he had found gold Ollie has gone from abandoned and unloved, to a loved and safe forever. He is now acting like a puppy and bringing new surprises weekly to his humans who update us regularly of his shenanigans The mix of so many different emotions through Ollie's journey was worth the end result. At times the struggle was real and an element of sadness was ever present that we couldn't 'fix' Ollie no matter what we tried. Now we sit here and reflect on the journey that is Ollie and find our hearts full and the only thing that matters now is Ollie's future and we couldn't be happier

12.01.2022 The face of happiness There's nothing more special than adopting a senior. Giving them the second chance they need. Meet Phoebe In tragic circumstances she found herself homeless. ... Lucky for Phoebe she was spotted instantly by SSR Sandy's family. They've so much love to give, and within a day they had decided to adopt her. So after her vetwork and a little rehab they made the long drive to Sydney and collected her. A nervous little bundle, we knew they had the patience and love to bring out Phoebe's happy and joyful spirit. See now, Phoebe, knowing how much she is adored in this beautiful photo by Annie Glendinning <3

It will be at different times as each dog has their own hurdles to get through

09.01.2022 Please help our girls see again they have been used and then discarded. They need help and we need your help to make it happen They are: - The forgotten ones.... - Bred for profit. - Totally blind by the age of 2yrs old and 5yrs old. - Neglected. - Unsocialised. - Discarded. They have completed their ability to make anyone money, Our tiny rescue is now hoping to try to give Ella and Lucille their chance at seeing again. It comes at an enormous financial cost of $11 000 - $12 000 to our registered charity that relies purely on the kindness of strangers and beloved loyal donators. We have managed to raise $5000 so far but we have such a long way to go. We thank each and every person that has helped us get this far We knew Lucille was blind, Ella was failed to be diagnosed by the vets she saw prior to coming into our care. Our costs immediately doubled. For eyesight alone; This does not include all the other costs it takes to look after our foster dogs. Let alone our other foster dogs or our forever care dogs. It has not come without stress and concern of how we manage this huge sum needed. The only responsible thing we can do is to cease taking in new dogs until we are in a better position to secure our girls future. There looks to be luxating patella issues for Ella as well. At the age of 5yrs she is worse for wear. So further costs look to be ongoing. But one step at a time. Our rescue is aiming to give these girls ALL the help they need. If you could even spare $5 to help cover the cost of eye surgery for our girls, we would be so grateful Knowing your donation would give Lucille and Ella the gift of sight. They deserve it. After all they have been through. Our bank details are Seniors and Silky Rescue BSB 112-879 Account: 422982171 Ref: LucElla We can provide a tax deductible receipt for donations $2 and over. Just email us at [email protected] for a receipt. If you have any fundraising ideas, please email us at [email protected] #lucilleandella

03.01.2022 The big day has arrived. Ella and Lucille are in for their cataract surgery. We can't wait for them to come home and watch the process begin as they see the world for the first time. These gorgeous girls deserve the chance of eyesight. Something we take for granted that our beloved dogs normally have, especially at the ages of 2yrs and 5yrs old.... As we continue to fundraise to help with the expensive surgery, our girls will be on healing and one step closer to seeing again. Thank you to all those that have contributed to making this happen. Without your support our girl's would not have this opportunity to have the gift of eyesight. If you would like to assist with the costs, we have a Christmas Fundraiser on now https://www.seniorsandsilkies.org.au/fundraisers.html Update - the girl's are home and resting. They will be back off to the eye specialist for their first check up tomorrow

01.01.2022 Genie update Our beautiful girl is recovering well After being very sleepy and quiet last night, we woke up to Genie wagging her tail ready to get on with the day ... We offered her some yummy food which she ate without hesitation. Pain relief medication was given Genie then promptly popped herself up onto the lounge via the doggy stairs where she set her self up to chill out and wait for pats and cuddles It is wonderful to see how quickly Genie is recovering and her sweet personality is shining through While Genie has a way to go before being ready for her forever home, we know she is recovering well and life is just going to get better and better for this old girl A huge thank you to all that have donated to Genie's vet bill. Without you we would not be able to help dogs such as Genie https://www.seniorsandsilkies.org.au/donate.html
