24.01.2022 Attendants wait. Attendants serve others. Attendants ensure the safety and happiness of a couple on their wedding day.... Attendants celebrate commitment, partnership reconciliation, compassion, mutual respect. Attendants rejoice in faith, hope and love. May the God who attends to all of creation beautiful, very good, bless you as you attend to strangers and neighbours. As you celebrate fairness, accurate reporting of the news, access to information and resources; as you help to build alliances for change, for social justice racial and ecological justice, may God bless you. May God bless you in attending to healthcare and accommodation, diverse representation, nutrition and inclusion; to vital questions May God bless you in attending to opportunities to serve and give. As you live graciously and truthfully, may God bless you. Amen. (Read the full homily, ‘How attentive are we?’ on our church website.) [Photo: Cathie Harrison, Bendalong NSW, 2020.]

23.01.2022 The Freedom Riders gained wide media publicity throughout Australia and internationally, arousing awareness of the plight of Indigenous Australians. Their actions were significant for, two years later, in the national referendum of 1967, the Australian people voted overwhelmingly in favour of removing individual state control over the way Indigenous people were governed and treated, gradually leading to many much-needed reforms at federal level. The group ensured their protes...ts were covered by the media, bringing the issue of racial discrimination to national and international press attention and stirring public debate about the disadvantage and racism facing Aboriginal people across Australia at the time. Charles Perkins said: The Ride was coordinated at the Wayside Chapel. The Chapel was going to be our contact with all the newspapers, television and radio. We did not think there would be much work involved but the Chapel was completely swamped. (Read the full homily, ‘A new tyranny’, on our church website.) [Charles Perkins. 21.01.2022 And I love these words from today’s gospel (Mark 13:29,33,37): Know that the Promised One is near, right at the door Stay awake! stay alert! Jesus encourages us to look around, to notice when people are in trouble, when people are worried or frightened, when the animals, the earth and skies are showing signs of distress. Faith is about being awake so we can look for the promises of God at all times. This month animal preservation project Aussie Ark has returned five pl...atypuses to the wild that were in distress in the Hunter River catchment during the bushfire crisis and drought. The mammals were severely malnourished and their waterproof fur was showing signs of extreme distress. Platypuses are to rivers what koalas are to forests, said Dr Stuart Blanch, of WWF-Australia. These days a sighting of just a few platypuses is often associated with a healthy population, but historical records suggest today’s numbers are only a fraction of what they once were. This alarming decline is a wake-up call to better protect our rivers and creeks. (Read the full homily, ‘The Promised One is near’, on our church website.) [Photo: Aussie Ark]

19.01.2022 There is opportunity to involve ourselves in corporate works of mercy. Together, we can make a difference to the way that food is distributed, the way that prisoners are treated in our state ... And then as individuals we can be merciful. I am called, in and through the conditions of my life (limitations enable this creativity), to respond mercifully to those around me. This is the good news. 18.01.2022 In the Spirit, I imagine the third worker, the one the tyrant calls worthless, lazy and a bum, the one the tyrant has thrown into the darkness, speaking/singing back: Right now, I can’t read too good, don’t send me no more letters no / Not unless you mail them from Desolation Row (Bob Dylan). In 1965, the same year that Dylan recorded Desolation Row, and inspired by the Freedom Rides that had been taking place in the southern states of the USA during the civil rights ca...mpaign to expose racist legislation and long-standing attitudes affecting the lives of Afro-Americans, Charles Perkins co-led a group of 30 students from Sydney University who, in a hire bus, traveled through the townships of rural NSW. The group was called the Student Action for Aboriginals (SAFA). Their objective was similar to that of the American Freedom Riders: to expose embedded and entrenched racism against Indigenous Australians, and to draw attention throughout Australia to their poor living conditions. 15.01.2022 For more than 70 years, churches in Australia have been taking part in the Christmas Bowl learning, praying and acting together to help bring hope, peace, joy and love to countries and people in distress. Community World Service Asia is distributing self-learning packages to children, advocating for girls’ education, and getting schools in Afghanistan ready to reopen. Donations can be made via donation envelopes in the church or via our SSUC link: mycb.link/46613 We are be...ing encouraged to stay alert for something else, something other than conflict and despair; to be alert for something more respectful, more humane, more sustainable, fair, kind (Read the full homily, ‘The Promised One is near’, on our church website.) [Khan Mohammad is a local shopkeeper residing in Qalai Akond village of Kama district of Nangarhar province. With five children to feed and his supply stock depleting, Khan is concerned about meeting his household expenses if his small business completely closes down. Many locals have lost their businesses as a result of the pandemic. Villagers are facing hunger issues due to the lack of resources in the area. Just about 50 people out of a total of 3,890 households were provided with assistance by the government while the remaining people are waiting for some kind of support. I am afraid of losing my shop as supplies decline and because of financial restrictions, I cannot restock my shop with more goods. https://communityworldservice.asia]

15.01.2022 Wishing all November birthdays a wonderful year ahead and be richly blessed throughout

14.01.2022 The gospel brings clarity, shines a light on kindness. This is the good news. (Read the full homily, ‘Only kindness matters’, on our church website.) (Read the full homily, ‘Only kindness matters’, on our church website.)... [Dorothy’s table setting.]

14.01.2022 It’s not about being right. It’s not about being strong. It’s not about being talented, intelligent or respectable. It’s about being merciful caring, attentive, compassionate. This is the good news. (Read the full homily, ‘Only kindness matters’, on our church website.) [Stained glass window at the Annunciation Melkite Catholic Cathedral in Roslindale, Massachusetts.]

11.01.2022 I love these words from today’s psalm: O God, return to us / let your face smile on us, / and we will be saved! God is a smiling God who wants to save or help us. We remember God as a smiling God, and we look forward to God appearing in many smiles. (Read the full homily, ‘The Promised One is near’, on our church website.) 06.01.2022 Ted Noffs was involved with the media and political figures and with the parents, Perkins said. Well, we hired the bus. We placed a banner along the front and prepared to start off from Sydney. The Rev. Ted said a prayer on the steps for those who like that sort of thing. I was one, I needed that kind of help. 03.01.2022 Might the third worker be seen as a Christ figure, the ground in which the talent is buried a figure for Christ's tomb? Might the meaning of the gospel, ... indirectly, have to do with risking love, with prosperity for the sake of (and not at the expense of) others? Might evangelical investments - entail loving actions and enterprise? Let us enter into the joy of God Resisting the iron fist that reaps where it did not sow. Amen. With courage to accept God’s faith in us. Amen. And compassion to stand with all who are cast aside. Amen. (Read the full homily, ‘A new tyranny’, on our church website.) 02.01.2022 Still, we might ask: If it is the case that merciful nonbelievers are welcomed into the banquet of life we are not shown devotees of one or other god or cult but simply kind and humane persons then why bother with Christianity? Why bother with religion? If, in the end, only kindness matters (Jewel, Hands, 1998), then why pray, why meet for worship, why build synagogues, mosques, temples and churches? The question can, of course, be asked the other way around: How does... my/your faith centre on reverence for life, on acknowledging the preciousness of life communicated by the gospel? How does being/becoming a Christian help me/you to be merciful? (Read the full homily, ‘Only kindness matters’, on our church website.) [Jewel, ‘Hands’, Atlantic, 1998.]

01.01.2022 Before we write homilies and seek to overcome estrangement, we belong together in the world. This is the good news. (Read the full homily, ‘Only kindness matters’, on our church website.) [https://www.brighthelm-stone.co.uk]
