09.01.2022 Today marks the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presleys death. Did you know, Melbourne General Cemetery is the location of a famous memorial to the King of rock '...n roll? Believed to be the only authorised Elvis memorial outside of America, it was unveiled by Australia's leading rock singer, Johnny O'Keefe, on 26 November 1977. Devastated by the singers premature death, his Australian fan club convinced the cemetery managers to locate the memorial in a rockery that has stood in the cemetery since the 1880s. Reflecting the significance of popular culture, and the style of rockery, the memorial is now heritage listed. Although Elvis is buried in Graceland, this memorial has been a popular place of pilgrimage for fans over the years, and remains one of the most visited memorials in the cemetery. On the anniversary of his death many of Elvis fans place flowers, guitar-shaped wreaths and teddy bears on the memorial. It is not unusual to see fans in tears all these years later. Today is no different, and we expect many fans will flock to Melbourne General Cemetery to reflect on the milestone anniversary of Elvis death. Perhaps you would like to join them and share your memories of the singer. Or why not book yourself on a tour of Melbourne General Cemetery to find out more about the Elvis memorial as well as other notable figures? Image Courtesy of Helen Green Art

07.01.2022 One of the quirkiest aspects of early Victorian funerals was the employment of a funeral mute. It was the mute's job to stand vigil outside the door of the dec...eased, then accompany the coffin, wearing dark clothes, looking solemn and usually carrying a long stick (called a wand) covered in black crepe. Historys best-known mute is undoubtedly Charles Dickens Oliver Twist, who was employed by the extremely sour undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry. Though most "mutes" were perfectly capable of speech, it was their responsibility, not only to remain silent throughout the duration of every funeral, but also to maintain an exaggeratedly mournful expression while they served in the capacity of mute. Macabre as it may seem, during the Regency period, there were men and boys who regularly supplemented their income as professional mutes. See more

03.01.2022 51 years ago today - 18 August 1966, 105 young Australians of Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (half of them conscripts) along with 3 New... Zealanders attached from 161 Battery, 16 Field Regiment, Royal New Zealand Artillery, fought for their lives against an overwhelming enemy force of 2,500 battle hardened North Vietnamese and Main Force Viet Cong, in a rubber plantation called Long Tan. These 18 young Australians, one from every state of Australia, gave their lives in the service of their country. Lest we forget these 18 brave Australians and of course the hundreds of former Vietnamese foes who perished in this incredible battle. We also remember the extraordinary duty, service, skill and gallantry of the supporting Australian, New Zealand and U.S. Army artillery in this battle, the RAAF, the Australian Armoured Corps and the U.S. Air Force. These circumstances of an Australian Infantry Company defeating an enemy force 25 times their size with combined arms support, was so extraordinary that Delta Company, 6RAR were awarded the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation for Gallantry, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation from the South Vietnamese Government, and the Australian Unit Citation for Gallantry. Today is also a day to remember and honour all of the 521 Australians and 37 New Zealanders who made the supreme sacrifice in the Vietnam War.
