24.01.2022 Gracious God, We give thanks anew for your providence and presence. We prayerfully seek your grace, amidst COVID-19 here and overseas.... We pray for those in need of healing. We pray for your peace with those who are anxious or grieving. We pray you will continue to strengthen and sustain all those who are serving in response. We pray for your Holy Spirits discernment amidst the many choices and decisions facing our national, community and medical leaders. We pray we each might see quickly what more we can do to help those who are vulnerable. This prayer for our nation in the family of nations, with all that is on our hearts, we gather now and pray through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Ecumenical prayer from the National Council of Churches. We have been invited to pray this prayer at 7pm each day.) #stmarystarofthesea #catholicchurch #perth #cottesloe #mosmanpark #graciousgod #pray #holyspirit #family #faith #love #jesuschrist #peace #nationalcouncilofchurches

22.01.2022 St Gregory ( c. 540 604), commonly known as Saint Gregory the Great, was the bishop of Rome from 3 September 590 to his death. He is known for initiating the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome, the Gregorian Mission, to convert the Anglo-Saxons in England to Christianity. Gregory is also known for his writings, which were more prolific than those of any of his predecessors as Pope. After his death, he was canonized immediately by popular acclaim. 21.01.2022 The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Yesterday was the Feast day of The Exaltation of the Holy Cross. On this day we celebrate the Cross as a source of holiness, an instrument of salvation and a symbol of Jesus victory over sin and death; on the Cross, we find the greatest sign of Gods love.... As for us, we proclaim the crucified Christ, a message that is offensive to the Jews and nonsense to the Gentiles; but for those whom God has called, both Jews and Gentiles, this message is Christ, who is the power of God and the wisdom of God.(I Cor 1,23-24) This feast day is linked to some important events in history: the finding of the True Cross by Saint Helena, and the dedication of two basilicas built by Constantine - one on Mount Golgotha and the other on the site of Jesus burial and resurrection. Lets pray together: Oh Lord Almighty! You have suffered death at the cross for our sins. Oh Holy Cross of Jesus! be my true light. Oh Holy Cross of Jesus! fill my soul with good thoughts. Oh Holy Cross! help me in my salvation. Oh Holy Cross! safeguard me against unholy thoughts and worldly dangers that I may worship the Holy Cross of Jesus of Nazareth crucified. Have pity on me. Oh Holy Cross of Jesus! be my hope. Oh Holy Cross have mercy on me forever and ever. In honor of the Precious Blood of Jesus and His fearful Death and Resurrection and His Glorification which leads to everlasting life. As true as Jesus is born on Christmas and crucified on Good Friday. As true as St. Joseph and Nicodemus took Jesus down from the cross. As true as Jesus ascended into heaven. May He preserve me from my enemies both visible and invisible forever and ever. Lord Almighty, into Your hands I give my soul and my body. Oh Lord Jesus! grant me strength to bear the cross as Yourself. Teach me to bear it with great humility that the Blessed Virgin may fill me with the Holy Spirit. Preserve my soul and lead it to life everlasting. Amen. 19.01.2022 St Mary of the Cross Mary Helen MacKillop (15 January 1842 8 August 1909) was an Australian nun who has been declared a saint by the Catholic Church, as St Mary of the Cross. She was born in Melbourne but is best known for her activities in South Australia. Together with the Reverend Julian Tenison-Woods, she founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart (the Josephites), a congregation of religious sisters that established a number of schools and w...elfare institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand, with an emphasis on education for the rural poor. The process to have MacKillop declared a saint began in the 1920s, and she was beatified in January 1995 by Pope John Paul II. #stmaryofthecross #marymackillop #stariftheseacatholicchurch #catholic #australiansfirstst #cottesloe #mosmanpark #faith #love #peace #jesuschrist #god #holyspirit

14.01.2022 Catholic Missions 2020 Lisieux Retreat Please see the flyer for information on the retreat. . .... . . . Some background to the retreat: St Zelie and St Louis were the parents of St Therese of Lisieux. The relics of this family of saints were here in Australia earlier this year during the height of our fears over the COVID-19 pandemic (https://www.catholicmission.org.au//st-th%C3%A9r%C3%A8se-o). That we have managed as a nation to avoid the worst of this pandemic, when compared to what has happened and continues to happen in other countries, is worth our gratitude. The story of St Zelie, St Louis and St Thereses struggles is not unfamiliar to ordinary families everywhere, who struggle through chronic illness, grief and mental illness during these dark and uncertain times. We can draw inspiration and strength from this family of saints by offering everything up in trust to a loving and merciful God.

14.01.2022 Being a dad is a vocation. A dad guides his children. He takes responsibility for them. He is both teacher and caregiver. He is firm but loving. He is a playmate and a companion. He is there in times of great need. A dad is a bit of Gods presence in our lives.... On this day, we pray for all those who have embraced the vocation of being a dad. May God, our Father in Heaven, bless all the fathers of the earth. And may Saint Joseph, husband of Mary and adoptive father of Jesus, care for all dads and inspire them. To those who are dads dads who are present, dads who are no longer with us, father figures, adoptive dads, dads who have lost children, those who have lost their dad, dads who have to be both mum and dad we wish you a HAPPY FATHERS DAY! #father #fathersday #stmarystarofthesea #catholic #catholicchurch #cottesloe #mosmanpark #faith #love #peace #jesuschrist #god #holyspirit #churchcelebration #celebration #godblessus

13.01.2022 This week we celebrated 3 Feast Days! 10 November - Pope St Leo the Great (c. 400 461), was born in Etruria and became Pope in 440. He constantly strove to keep the faith whole and strenuously defended the unity of the Church. As Pope, he famously persuaded Attila the Hun not to march on Rome in 452, and prevented the invading Vandals from massacring the population in 455. Leo left many doctrinal and spiritual writings behind and a number of them are included in the Office of... Readings to this day. He died in 461. 11 November - St Martin of Tours (c.316 - 397), was born in the Roman province of Pannonia m and was educated at Pavia in Italy. He was baptized, left the army and after spending some time as a hermit on an island off the Ligurian coast, founded a monastery at Ligugé in western France, where he lived a monastic life guided by St Hilary. Later he was ordained priest and became bishop of Tours. In his actions he gave an example of what a good shepherd should be. 12 November - Saint Josaphat (c.1580 - 1623), was born in the Ukraine of Orthodox parents.Josaphat joined the first monastery of the order of St Basil to be united to the Catholic Church: he was the first person to do so. He was ordained priest and, eventually and reluctantly, appointed bishop of Polotsk in 1617. Although Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, supported the union, the local aristocracy were against it because it threatened their control of ecclesiastical benefices. Plotting with the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, who visited the Ukraine in 1621, they stirred up trouble and as a result Josaphat was murdered by a mob in 1623. 11.01.2022 Yesterday, 30 November was a feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle. He was born in Bethsaida, in Galilee, and worked as a fisherman. He may have been a disciple of St John the Baptist. He became one of the first to follow Jesus and introduced his brother, Simon Peter, to him. As one of the twelve Apostles he was widely venerated in ancient times, and became patron saint of Scotland because according to legend some of his bones were brought there and buried at the place where the town of St Andrew’s now stands. #standrew #saint #catholic #catholicchurch

11.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St. Charles Borromeo who was born on October 2, 1538 at the castle of Arona on Lake Maggiore near Milan and died on 3 November 1584 . From the age of 12 he dedicated himself to a life of service to the Church. When his uncle gave him the family income Charles donated the most part of his money to the poor of the Church, keeping just enough to pay for his education and his preparation for service to the Church. Borromeo studied civil and canon law at... the University of Pavia. Because of a speech impediment he was considered slow but he proved to be adept and after his father´s death in 1559 the young man earned a doctorate. Years later when his uncle became Pope Pius IV he was created as a cardinal. At only 23 years old, his new nomination gave him even more duties including the government of the Papal States, the supervision of the Knights of Malta, the Franciscans, and the Carmelites. On 19 November 1562, when his older brother Federico died, his family asked him to go back home to get married and continue the family name. He did not accept, his aim was to put into practice the dignity and duties of the bishop as drafted by the recent Council of Trent. Charles became archbishop of Milan in 1565 and after the death of his uncle, Pius IV (1566), Charles was responsible for significant reforms in the Catholic Church, including the founding of seminaries for the education of priests. #stcharlesborromeo #saints #catholic #carholicchurch #feastday #stmarystarofthese

09.01.2022 The feast day of Our Lady of Sorrows is commemorated on 15 of September, one day after the feast of the Holy Cross to show the close connection between Jesus Passion and Marys Sorrows. The seven sorrows of Mary, which were foretold by the Priest Simeon, consist of this intense suffering and grief during the Passion and death of our Lord. They are: 1. The prophecy of Simeon. (St. Luke 2:34, 35)... 2. The flight into Egypt. (St. Matthew 2:13, 14) 3. The loss of the Child Jesus in the temple. (St. Luke 2: 43-45) 4. The meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross. 5. The Crucifixion. 6. The taking down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross. 7. The burial of Jesus. May our lady bless us. #ourladyofsorrows #sevensorrowsofmary #feastday #stmarystarofthesea #catholic #catholicchurch #cottesloe #mosmanpark #faith #love #peace #jesuschrist #god #holyspirit

08.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St Clare of Assisi, an Italian saint who was born on 16 July 1194 and died on 11 August 1253. She was one of the first followers of Francis of Assisi. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition, and wrote their Rule of Life, the first set of monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. Following her death, the order she founded was renamed in her honour as the Order of Saint C...lare, commonly referred to today as the Poor Clares. St Clare was canonized on 26 September 1255 by Pope Alexander IV. Some interesting facts: In art, Clare is often shown carrying a monstrance in commemoration of the occasion when she warded away the invading soldiers of Frederick II at the gates of her convent by displaying the Blessed Sacrament and kneeling in prayer. Pope Pius XII designated Clare as the patron saint of television in 1958 because when she was too ill to attend Mass, she had reportedly been able to see and hear it on the wall of her room. There are traditions of bringing offerings of eggs to the Poor Clares for their intercessions for good weather, particularly for weddings. This happens because the name Clare means egg white in Italian. #stmarystarofthesea #catholic #catholicchurch #cottesloe #mosmanpark #faith #love #peace #jesuschrist #god #holyspirit #stclareofassisi

06.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests. Here is a prayer he wrote in the 19th century.

05.01.2022 Today is a feast day for Sts Simon and Jude. Simon and Jude were disciples who were chosen by Jesus Himself to teach others about God's love. Simon was known as the Zealot which means a person strongly committed to something. He solidly believed in the importance of people following Jewish law. Since he met Jesus he changed his life and became assured that the most important thing was to follow Jesus and his teachings.... Jude was also called Jude Thaddeus to avoid people getting confused with Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus. Jude is the patron saint of hopeless cases and desperate situations. When people feel that there is no one else to turn to, they pray to St. Jude and ask him to bring their problems to Jesus. Jude has a great faith in God and knows that nothing is impossible for those who believe in the Lord. Both Sts Simon and Judes traveled together teaching about Jesus. As both of them witnessed Jesus's miracles and his death and Resurrection they baptized many people who became believers in God. Simon and Jude died on the same day in Beirut for practicing their faith. Saints Simon and Jude, pray for us! #stssimonandjude #saints #feastday #stmarystarofthesea #catholic #catholicchurch #cottesloe #mosmanpark #faith #love #peace #jesuschrist #god #holyspirit

05.01.2022 Welcoming Mass 06/09/2020 Only the human being is capable of transforming a gesture into a rite and an object into a symbol. 04.01.2022 Todays Gospel MT 18,1-5, 10, 12-14 The disciples approached Jesus and said, Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?... He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. What is your opinion? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray? And if he finds it, amen, I say to you, he rejoices more over it than over the ninety-nine that did not stray. In just the same way, it is not the will of your heavenly Father that one of these little ones be lost." #stmarystarofthesea #catholic #catholicchurch #cottesloe #mosmanpark #faith #love #peace #jesuschrist #god #holyspirit #gospel #biblereading

02.01.2022 Nativity of Virgin Mary Today we celebrate the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The traditional fixed date is nine months after the December 8 celebration of her Immaculate Conception as the child of Saints Joachim and Anne.... According to this account, Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child who will advance Gods plan of salvation for the world. Such a story, like many biblical counterparts, stresses the special presence of God in Marys life from the beginning. 01.01.2022 Founded in 1904, St Mary Star of the Sea Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Cottesloe, Perth. Our church is named after Our Lady, Star of the Sea, which was a title given to the Blessed Virgin in the 4th century by St Jerome. A translation of the Latin "Stella Maris", the title is used to emphasize Marys role as a guiding star on the way to Christ. Under this name, the Virgin Mary intercedes as a guide and protector of seafarers.... This year, our parish is going to commemorate her Feast Day for the first time on Sunday 23rd August. You are warmly invited to participate in the Mass at 10am. We will have a special morning tea in the Parish Hall afterwards. (Please be reminded that we must still maintain 1.5 metres physical distance between people from different households.)
