24.01.2022 Hi all! The ACT government has today released a plan and timeframes for a further easing of restrictions, starting this weekend, including many positive changes for hospitality businesses. For us though, due to SBM’s relatively small size, number of staff and number of people walking in, we will be remaining takeaway only (with the same restrictions in place) for a little while yet. We are truly appreciative of the continued support we’re receiving from you all, and for the number of you saying how much you’re looking forward to be able to sit in again and enjoy SBM’s unique pleasures...so are we! We promise you that when the time is right we’ll be back open in all our former glory and will look after you better than ever, because sometimes you gotta dance with the one that brung ya! #standbythis

You may have heard that the ACT Government will be lifting the restriction on small hospitality venues (such as us) from this Friday, allowing us to return to close to normal dine in numbers while obviously still observing other existing social distancing and hygiene requirements. We’re as keen as you are to get back to some kind of normal - after six months of takeaway only we’re totally sick of disposables, our chefs don’t want to see another bacon and egg roll for... the rest of their lives and we’re all desperate for some company inside the cafe other than our own. Unfortunately though it is going to take us a little bit longer to get reorganised for what is quite a big change to our operation, so we’ll be staying as is for another couple of weeks while we work things out, dust things off and learn to carry plates again. Watch this space and you’ll be the first to know when things change. Thanks as always for your continued support! xx #standbythis

21.01.2022 Friends! If you hadn’t already noticed we’ve sneakily reopened for dine in! Our sit down numbers are strictly limited to 25 people at a time and the courtyard will be closed for the time being. We won’t be taking any bookings, and as I’m sure you can understand there may be a wait for a table during busy periods. Unfortunately if you are a group bigger than four or you have a dog and need to sit outside takeaway may still be the better option for you. We will also be limi...ting seating time as and when we have to, but please don’t take it personally if we hurry you off the table if others are waiting. We will continue to offer everything on the menu to takeaway and for those of you who are not comfortable being in a cafe environment quite yet we will still offer as contactless an experience as possible, including running takeaway out to your car or across to the picnic table area. Our opening hours until further notice are Mon-Fri 7am-2pm (kitchen closing at 1:30) and Sat-Sun 8am-1pm (kitchen closing at 12:30). 19.01.2022 Hey all! Quick update on our plans for the rest of 2020. We are still limited to 25 dine in customers at a time, as such there will continue to be no action in the back section. Sadly this means we won’t be able to take any bookings for Christmas breakfasts and lunches (or any bookings at all) for the rest of the year. Not only will Georgie often be providing friendly and efficient table service, but she’ll also be taking your money when you’ve finished your coffees, or your meals. PLEASE REMEMBER TO PAY BEFORE YOU LEAVE. Yes it’s been a long year, yes we all have many other things on our minds, and yes some of you may have not sat down in a cafe for a little while, and maybe there are a few other places at which you pay up front, but how oft...en would you sit down and eat in a restaurant and then forget to pay? There are dozens of things we need to remember while we’re looking after you but paying once you’re finished should be the only thing we require of you. Not only is there the obvious cost we have to bear when this happens, it’s also embarrassing for us when we have to chase you across the carpark, embarrassing for you when you have to come back with your tail between your legs, and more than anything it’s demoralising for us and our staff! 17.01.2022 Hi all! In light of the ACT government delaying this weekend’s easing of restrictions we too will be taking some more time before transitioning back to dine in. This is still such a difficult time for hospitality businesses. Moving from takeaway to dine in and so on is not just as easy as flicking a switch, there are so many things to consider. We need to rehire, restock and replan all facets of our business. Opening up and then having to close again such as some of our frien...ds in Melbourne have had to do is even more costly, complicated and soul destroying, so we hope you’ll understand our extra caution. We’ve gotten a fair bit of grief from people (although not from any of you lovelies obviously) about why they were allowed to sit down for a coffee in such and such cafe up the road that is smaller than us and was full of people yet they’re not able to do so at SBM. All we can say is that we have had to navigate a very fine line between business viability and health, and that the decisions we’ve made have always been for the good of both. It’s fair to say that we have been one of the more cautious hospitality businesses in Canberra but we also feel that we have been one of the most responsible. We have and will continue to do everything exactly as per ACT Health’s strict guidelines regarding social distancing, sanitation and otherwise. So for now we’ll continue to offer takeaway food and coffee only (plus still no cash or keep cups) until such time that we feel comfortable and are permitted to make any changes. We’re working extra hard to make sure our food is as alfresco ready, transportable and Canberra winter appropriate as possible...continuing this weekend with this absolute beaut raspberry tiramisu french toast. 12.01.2022 We’ve still been getting lots of questions about what today’s easing of restrictions means to us, and whether we’ll be opening for dine in this weekend. Unfortunately, our cosy little cafe’s size is working against us, and due to the 4sqm rule still very much being in place, we’d be restricted to only one table inside and one or two out in the courtyard. Clearly, this would leave more of you disappointed than it would us staying takeaway only, so that’s what we’re going to do... for the time being. We know we’re entering the depths of winter and that it can be damn cold waiting outside, but more often than not there’s a bit of beautiful Canberra winter sun to bask in, and hopefully that makes it worthwhile. We’ll keep you posted on any developments and hopefully by the time the frost has truly set in our chairs will be down, our heating on, our door closed and our mugs piping hot.
