25.01.2022 From the Archives: Star of the East Maryborough Reaction to Influenza Epidemic 1919 In June 1919, like much of Australia and New Zealand, Queensland was in the ...grip of the Spanish Flu Epidemic. The influenza epidemic had spread from Europe at the end of WW1, carried by the troops returning home. It is estimated that 50 to 100 million people died worldwide. Due to quarantine restrictions put in place by the Queensland Government the spread of the disease was somewhat but not completely contained. To help stop the spread of the disease the Grand Lodges of Queensland, in line with government regulations, put in place measures to ensure people did not congregate in enclosed spaces. The Star of the East Lodge, which met in Maryborough, records in its Centenary History that In the minutes of the meeting held on 19th of June 1919, there is a reminder of the influenza epidemic which caused so much dismay following the end of World War 1. The Emergency Health Regulations limited the attendance of meetings to 20 persons. In conformity with a ruling from Grand Lodge, the attendance at meetings was also limited to 20 persons. In conformity with a ruling from Grand Lodge, the meeting was opened with 19 brethren who cast their votes for the election of Master(sic); whereupon three of the brethren retired to allow two remaining brethren to exercise their votes." Perhaps this is the reason that, unlike the other Lodges in Maryborough (see advertisement), they did not advertise that 20 members were to attend each meeting. See more

16.01.2022 FROM THE ARCHIVES: This excerpt is from 1944's The Queensland Freemason. It seemed to be a fitting time of year to share this piece of history. Did anyone ever come across Plumridge's crystallised jubes (see the bottom of the document)?

11.01.2022 The Relationship Between Freemason's and Notre Dame Cathedral. Yes. Absolutely. The relationship between Freemasonry and the Knights Templar goes waaaaaaay back.... Freemasons built many of the Knights Templar commanderies, knights halls, churches, abbeys, preceptories and castles. In France, the Knights Templar were major financial backers for many major building projects, including the great cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, which was constructed under the direction and particiaption of operative Freemasons. Wherever Knights Templars built or funded the building of great buildings, Freemasons were heavily involved; from the Middle East, through France, Italy Portugal, Spain, England, Scotland France and other European countries. Wherever these building were constructed, the Knights Templar had holdings. Templar 'districts' were holdings that weren't subject to city or country taxation (they were - technically - Church property), where the ancillary personnel for the Commandry or other Templar operations lived. Many masons lived within the Templar districts, and by the 1200s, both group began profiting from each other's expertise. Both groups simultaneously created labor unions, Masons (through historic documents) joined the Templars and worked on Templar and church buildings. Templars needed buildings for banks, churches and other buildings, and Masons ... well, they were builders. Built by Masons, financed by Templars. After the Knights Templar were arrested, their buildings certainly didn't disappear. Neither did the districts where many Freemasons and Templars lived. This same held true in England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain and other nations throughout Europe. Masons & Templars living in the same communities, doing much the same work (especially after the collapse of the popularity of running Crusades in the Holy Land). This included building Roslin Castle (not to be confused with Rosslyn Chapel), which was started in the early 1300s, after a large influx of Freemasons from France ... this "large influx" happened right around the same time as the French arrest of the Templars. Henry Sinclair (who was a witness at at least one Templar trial) is linked to the Knights Templar, as is his son and the entire Sinclair clan from the 1300s. There is plenty of paperwork and documentation to prove the intermingling of the two from the earliest founding of the Templars, through their arrest, and up through the point where Freemasonry changed from an operative fraternity to a speculative one.

07.01.2022 My name is WBro James Targett, I am a British Paratrooper Veteran, and an Australian Veteran. In September 2019 I am taking part in a charity bike ride with 40... other riders that is raising money to help British Veteran Airborne Soldiers and Australian Veterans, through various organisations and Charitys. The route will cover about 680km (500 miles) over 5 days, thats about 160km a day. (A long time in the saddle, as I am now in my 60's but it will be worth every moment.) Australia is well named "The lucky Country" for our Veterans. Over here we have The Department of Veteran Affairs; RSL, and various organisations that can help, even with these support systems in place a study since 2010 has found that 1 in 20 of the 8,370-homeless people interviewed over the past eight years who are living on the streets in Australia, were ex-military personnel. There are many complex factors involved, including not only the trauma that veterans have experienced in wartime deployment, but also the shame and embarrassment they feel around reaching out for help when their lives are falling apart. If you would like to contact Wor bro James Targett about his cause please email [email protected]

05.01.2022 Freemasonry Our history and traditions One of the aspects of Freemasonry that draws many men to become involved is its rich heritage and symbolism. Ancient documents trace the evolution of its ideas from antiquity to the middle ages to the present day.... Evidence suggests that modern Freemasonry originated in the practices of operative stone masons during the middle ages. The gatherings of operative masons were primarily concerned with developing, acknowledging, and testing the skill of its members, and establishing regulations. There were also ceremonies in which new members swore an obligation to abide by moral codes, regulations and not to bring the craft into disrepute. Over time ceremonies began to include allegories based around the building of King Solomon's Temple, which were used as a means to convey moral lessons. The masons' tools themselves were used as symbols, the contemplation of which allowed the mason to reflect on these lessons while he worked. As the operative masons' guilds diminished, the fraternal aspects and lessons of moral philosophy continued on to become "speculative" masonry, or Freemasonry, the organisation we have today. Speculative Freemasonry developed in Scotland, Ireland and England during the late 1600s and early 1700s. By the 1730s Freemasonry had spread through Europe and North America, and has had a presence in Australia since the early 1800s. The first recorded Masonic activity in Queensland was in the states foundation year of 1859. The inaugural meeting of the North Australian Lodge (No 1098 English Constitution) was held in July 1859 in Albert Street in Brisbane. Our rituals and symbols Masonic ritual is used to instruct new candidates in the teachings of Freemasonry. Our lessons are primarily broken down into the three initiatory ceremonies known as degrees. To ensure the candidate gets to experience and appreciate each degree at its optimum, he is kept in the dark about it until he experiences it first hand. This is one of the main reasons Freemasons conduct their meetings in private. We don't want to spoil the journey of our three degrees for those who have yet to participate. It would be like telling you how a movie ends as you are watching it. During these degree ceremonies, Freemasons use the metaphors of stonemasons' tools and implements, against the allegorical backdrop of the building of King Solomon's Temple, to convey "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."
