25.01.2022 What a great initiative.

25.01.2022 Today is the feast day of St Bartholomew. He is depicted in these windows from the southern side of our church. St Bartholomew doesnt get many mentions in the New Testament but he was a great missionary, courageous martyr and the patron saint of all sorts of practical people like plasterers, tailors, farmers, housepainters and butchers. Almighty and everlasting God,... who gave to your apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe your word: grant that your Church may love that word which he believed and may faithfully preach and receive the same; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. See more

25.01.2022 The Bishop commissioning Rosemary as Priest in Charge of Holy Trinity Wooloongabba

25.01.2022 The Archbishop is pleased to announce the appointment of The Reverend Rosemary Gardiner as Priest in Charge of the Parish of Woolloongabba. Rosemary is currently an Assistant Priest in the Parish of Hamilton. Rosemarys Commissioning date is still to be advised, but will be announced later this year.... I know that Rosemary will serve the people of Woolloongabba faithfully and well, and that they will welcome Rosemary, Lindsay and their family to the Parish.

25.01.2022 Looking forward to Jumble next weekend!

23.01.2022 A Prayer for Hiroshima Day Like most traumatic scars, the ones that are found in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are permanent: reminders of the terrible damage human beings can inflict. Similar scars can be found in the hearts and souls of people around the world who understand this terror: scars of grief, sadness, fear and even shame. None of these scars promise an end to war and devastation. Instead, they serve as a reminder of healing and renewal of a return to life.... Gracious God, Spirit of Life and Love, help us to see our scars: those we have created, those we are called to witness, and those we can soothe and heal. We are deeply grateful for the buds and blossoms that even the most scarred offer as a revelation to the world. And, especially on the anniversary of Hiroshima Day, we renew our commitment to peace individually, collectively and globally: To peace within which calms our anxieties and fears, To peace between which overcomes differences, animosities and conflict, And, to the great peace, beyond even our understanding, that is Your gift and which we attempt to be stewards of for the world. Amen.

22.01.2022 I know our poinciana trees are beautiful, but I think the frangipanis are underrated. They look pretty good at the moment, if you ask me!

21.01.2022 Today, 15 August, is the feast day of Mary, Mother of Our Lord. This is a perfect illustration of the story-telling function of stained glass windows in church. Here at St Augustines we have windows depicting the whole arc of Marys story: Her childhood (top left) The Annunciation (top centre) The Visitation (top right)... The Nativity (centre left) The Flight to Egypt (centre) The Holy Family (Jesus as a child) (centre right) Jesus in the Temple (bottom left) Jesus on the Cross (bottom centre) The Pieta (Jesus brought down from the cross) (bottom right) Loving God, who chose the Virgin Mary, by your grace, to be the mother of our Lord and Saviour: fill us with your grace, that in all things we may accept your holy will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

21.01.2022 Music for Advent. Youtube is a great source if you don't already own your favourites. A favourite album of mine is the St Louis Jesuits, Gentle Night. Here is a taste. https://www.youtube.com/watch

19.01.2022 Great speakers. Unfortunately it means getting up at 4am. Ill keep an eye out to see if they are going to be available later

19.01.2022 On September 2, the worldwide Anglican Church commemorates the New Guinea Martyrs. The Martyrs refer to 12 Australian, English and Papuan Anglican missionaries who were brutally murdered in several locations in August 1942 in then New Guinea (now the independent state of Papua New Guinea and the contested Indonesian provinces of West Papua and Papua). Four of the twelve came from Brisbane diocese. Our Te Deum window depicts three of them (L-R): Miss Mavis Parkinson (incorr...ectly depicted as a nun), Rev John Barge and Nurse May Hayman. A Prayer for us and our Brothers and Sisters in PNG: Almighty God, there is no greater love than to give our lives for your friends. Grant us and the people of Papua New Guinea the courage to make our own sacrifice. And may we, in the company of your Martyrs, gaze with joy upon the face of Christ. Amen. 19.01.2022 Music for Advent. I have always loved the album Gentle Night by the St Louis Jesuits. You might like to listen to this song https://www.youtube.com/watch or even the whole album.

18.01.2022 Some food for thought.

17.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Ignatius of Loyola - the founder of the Jesuits and the writer of the influential "Spiritual Exercises". For me the most helpful of these is the Examen - a way to review each day and to seek God's help so that our tomorrow is informed by our yesterday. 15.01.2022 The second beetle

15.01.2022 8 September celebrates the Birth of Mary, Mother of the Lord. It seems like we just had Mary's feast day, so I will keep this post short. This window is in our Lady Chapel and depicts Mary as a child with her mother, St Anne. Loving God, who chose the Virgin Mary, by your grace,... to be the mother of our Lord and Saviour: fill us with your grace, that in all things we may accept your holy will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. See more

14.01.2022 21 September is the Feast of St Matthew. Matthew is depicted in this window on the north side of the church at the moment of his being called by Jesus. He is also depicted in a window in the columbarium, along with the other three evangelists (Mark, Luke and John). As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, Follow me. And he got up and followed him. And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax-collectors and sinne...rs came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, Why does your teacher eat with tax-collectors and sinners? But when he heard this, he said, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners. (Matthew 9.9-13) God of mercy, you chose a tax collector, Saint Matthew, to share the dignity of the apostles. By his example and prayers help us to follow Christ and remain faithful in your service. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

14.01.2022 St Andrew’s Day. St Andrew is the patron Saint of Scotland. He is the brother of Peter (though not one of Jesus’s inner circle - at least according to Matthew, Mark and Luke). In John’s gospel Andrew plays a significant role. Here he is introducing Jesus to the young boy who has food that will feed the 5000.

13.01.2022 Music for the first Sunday of Advent. I love the music of the St Louis Jesuits. Their album (now quite old) Gentle Night is great Advent listening. If you like this one, you might like to listen to all the songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch

12.01.2022 Eternal God, the only source of peace, we pray for all who serve in the defence forces of this land. Give them courage and comfort in danger, patience in waiting, and discipline in the just use of force. Help us to seek for all people the freedom to serve you and each other in compassion and peace. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.... Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5.9)

09.01.2022 For this season of creation, A "Creation Benedictus" by Steven Shakespeare which was part of the liturgy for last Saturday evening's service... . Blessed be the One who creates Who delights in the rhythm of life From the strangeness of matter a universe is spun Within the heart of being Life emerges, vibrant and searching Through the intricate paths of evolution It becomes complex and beautiful Blessed be the One who creates Who speaks through the bodies of all creatures On the fearful clarity of the mountain top The Spirit sings of transformation In the unknown deeps of the ocean The Spirit sings of rebirth In wood and river, field and desert The Spirit sings a new song May the wonder of creation open us To a life beyond our understanding Blessed be the One who creates Who travels across the threshold With reverence for all creatures Let us make peace with the sky With reverence for all lands Let us make peace with the earth With reverence for all becoming Let us make peace with the sea May our senses be filled with the play of creation With a wisdom of the living heart Blessed be the One who creates In whom all things are One!

08.01.2022 An invitation to pray with me this Sustainable September. A prayer for the Season of Creation.

07.01.2022 Season of creation - a joy to be in the midst of so much beauty and song. I was surprised to see not one but two beetles on the same twig.

06.01.2022 Season of Creation - joy in the morning

06.01.2022 As we settle into the lockdown with all it's anxieties and the disruptions to our lives, we might reflect on the words of Sam Wells (quoted in a letter from our Bishop) and to use the prayer below. Sam Wells, Vicar of St Martin in the Fields in London, writes, Our best response to setback, disappointment and loss is to assess which things last a limited time, and which last forever and to transfer our energies from the former to the latter. This is the real adaptive work. ...What we must not do, in isolating ourselves from the virus, is isolate ourselves from the Holy Spirit. The work of the Spirit cannot be locked down. Through it we find springs in the desert. With it we witness epiphanies of resurrection. Please continue in prayer for health care workers, and especially for our own Anglicare Staff working in aged care and with other vulnerable people. God of healing and hope, In Jesus you meet us in our places of uncertainty and fear. Look on us with mercy at this time. Be with the vulnerable, the anxious and those who feel in danger. Through this time, Bring out the best and not the worst in us. Make us more aware of our dependence on each other, And the strength that comes from being one in you, Through Christ, Emmanuel, God with us. Amen

06.01.2022 Season of creation - evening clouds, maybe with the promise of rain.

05.01.2022 The azaleas on the Charlton St side of the church are looking particularly beautiful this morning. I think nearly everyone stopped to enjoy them on their way out!

05.01.2022 July 25: Feast of St James The St James window is located on the northern wall of the church. Note the symbols of the St James iconography: travel staff, scroll of Scripture, and the shell design on the border of his coat - shells being the sign of a pilgrim. This James is the saint associated with the Camino pilgrimage route across Europe, which culminates at the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, where St James is traditionally believed to be buried. Matthew 4.18-22; Ma...tthew 20.20-28; Luke 9.46-56 Merciful God, Whose holy apostle Saint James, Leaving his father and all that he had, Was obedient to the calling of your Son Jesus Christ And followed him even to death: Help us, forsaking the false attractions of the world, To be ready at all times to answer your call without delay; Through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, Who is alive and reigns with you In the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, now and for ever. Amen. (Collect from the book Exciting Holiness)

04.01.2022 Roy Orbison fan and aspiring singer John, 71, is surprised with special guest performance of his favourite song, Pretty Woman. John had his dreams realised and ...shot to worldwide fame when he got to perform as Elvis for his friends at St Martins. Can we top that dream with a special surprise performance of Pretty Woman from an ARIA winning rock star Rai Thistlethwayte? See Thirsty Merc frontman's killer performance and John's reaction, coming Monday 14 September #ByRequest #AustralianMusic

03.01.2022 "O shout to the Lord in triumph all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness and come before his face with songs of joy." (Psalm 100.1) Collect for the feast of Christ the King: God of power and love,... who raised your Son Jesus from death to life, resplendent in glory to rule over all creation: free the world to rejoice in his peace, to glory in his justice, and to live in his love. Unite the human race in Jesus Christ your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (detail from the Te Deum window)

03.01.2022 31 August is the feast day of St Aidan of Lindisfarne (d. 651). Aidan was an Irish monk and missionary credited with converting the Anglo-Saxons in Northumbria to Christianity. He founded a monastic cathedral on the island of Lindisfarne, served as its first bishop, and travelled ceaselessly throughout the countryside, spreading the gospel to both the Anglo-Saxon nobility and the socially disenfranchised (including children and slaves). St Aidan is depicted here in our Te Deu...m window, holding a model of Lindisfarne Priory. The Prayer of St Aidan: Leave me alone with God as much as may be. As the tide draws the waters close in upon the shore, Make me an island, set apart, alone with you, God, holy to you. Then with the turning of the tide prepare me to carry your presence to the busy world beyond, the world that rushes in on me till the waters come again and fold me back to you.

03.01.2022 Look whats here - the new electronic sign is nearly ready!

02.01.2022 This Sunday, November 29 is the first Sunday of Advent. Now might be a good time to think about how you will prepare yourselves for Christmas. If you have never made an Advent Wreath this may be the year. https://www.mercyhome.org/blog/sunday-mass/advent-wreath/ (the article has a date from a previous year)

01.01.2022 Written by clergy and lay people across the Diocese, Sunday Devotions are short reflections based on the lectionary readings of the day, suitable for small group discussion or personal use.
