03.01.2022 Ballarat Buninyong Branch Line affectionately called the Bunny Hop Line or the Bunny ! Ballarat people love heritage and steam trains! Dont we ? Here's Part ...1 of the story of the Buninyong Railway and more will be added at a sooner rather than later time :-) Could have been the saviour of the Eureka Centre? Approximately 12 kilometres south of Ballarat is a beautiful little town called Buninyong and for many years, Buninyong, with its own Railway Station, was connected directly to Ballarat via rail. At Ballarat Station, one could consign goods to Buninyong or buy a ticket and travel as a passenger with many stations and stops along the way, servicing outlying residents and industries. In 1885, Buninyong had an approximate population of 3000 and apparently 20 hotels. By the late 1880s, growing Buninyong had secondary industries and the need for a railway was promoted by the Mayor of Buninyong, David Mortimer Davies who also happened to be the Minister for Public Works in the Gillies State Government at the time. The contract for construction of 6.84 miles of railway was awarded to Messrs Lewis and Roberts on 13th April 1888, so 130 years ago just passed. The cost of the venture was about 9670 per mile and after the first sod was turned, Ballarat East residents protested vigorously at the thought of a level crossing in Victoria Street and eventually won with the original metal bridges still in place over the cuttings just near Rodier St. The line was completed on and opened for traffic on the 12th September 1889 with much fanfare including a procession led by the Sebastopol Brass Band and a massed choir who sang a song especially composed for the opening. This day was declared a public holiday in Buninyong and all the school children were given a free return trip to Ballarat. A local enterprising school teacher created a paper for the event The Buninyong Illustrated Railway News which sold out quickly at two pence a copy. The Mayor at the time, Cr P Hedrick also drove in the last rail spike. The Minister, Mr David Davies, addressed the crowd with the bold prediction that the line would eventually go down the Leigh Valley to the seaboard. Of course this never happened but he thanked and congratulated the people of Buninyong upon obtaining access to all parts of the colony. To finalise formalities, a banquet attended by over 200 people was had at the Buninyong Town Hall. The Ballarat Buninyong Railway line began at Ballarat Station, then continued past Ballarat East, and after travelling up the main line for a short distance, it crossed the mainlines in the vicinity of the Ballarat Locomotive Depot and under the King St footbridge and then Queen St Bridge. Just past the Queen St bridge, the track went into a tight cutting heading south that went under the Victoria St bridges and onwards to Eureka, where the line branched off the mainline into various industries in the area. The first offshoot was directly into the Eureka Stockade Park itself, across Charlesworth St, near the Northern end of the current caravan park and curved around in an arc. Excursion and picnic trains would take passengers from Ballarat to the lovely gardens, the Eureka Memorial and of course the swimming pool. The continuation of this line went through the park and actually crossed Stawell St just near the northern end of the current swimming pool and kiosk. This was the Eureka Tile Works siding and what a magical sight it was for a boy to be at ground level and see and hear these steaming, hissing steel behemoths slowly puff their way through the grassy park. Just beyond Charlesworth St the line continued to Eureka St and ran parallel with Rodier St. It was also less than 50 metres from the current Eureka Centre or MADE as it was known. Just a little bit North and West of the now Eureka Centre, the line crossed Rodier St into Cowleys Ironworks Mill. Cowleys manufactured boilers, steam powered machinery such as Steam Rollers and even 175 railway wagons for the Victorian Railways in 1915. Anyone who lived in the East would have heard the Cowley’s start, smoko, lunch and knock off whistles and the hammering of heavy steel which rang like a bell over the whole area. The whole area behind MADE/Eureka Centre, bounded by Eureka, Rodier and Charlesworth Sts was made up of railway sidings and platforms for loading and unloading and there were huge holding tanks for the petroleum companies inc Caltex, Golden Fleece and Esso. There were also at one time, holding yards and stock facilities for pigs that were taken to Eureka and then taken just down the road to George Farmers Eureka Bacon and Ham Company on the corner of Eureka and Joseph Sts. The Buninyong Line provided multi purpose railway access and vital transport to many Ballarat East industries as well. Next time , we will explore more about the Buninyong Line.
