21.01.2022 REMINISCING EPISODE 7 Back to my show horses I had brought a racehorse up from Bathurst to race in Brisbane and had him entered at the Gold Coast and while th...e horses were in the mounting yard there was a nice chestnut playing up a treat. It was one of Howard Wilson's horses. I won the race but that chestnut kept niggling me. That night I rang Howard up to ask if he would sell him to me, he said he was going to give him 1 more race. A few night's later he called me and asked if I still wanted to buy him, yes I wanted him. So I sent my daughter to pick him up, and when she came back she said Howard said I had to have this if I wanted him, and low and behold she had a pup, Howard said it wont grow too big. Yes a full sized alsation he grew into. CHARLIE. The horse was non other than the magnificent GLOWING PLANET. He started his show career and also ended it with ROBYN BARRY. IN 1988/89 HE WAS SUPREME Champion at every show he did on the New England run, he then went on to win his novice and open at Sydney Royal and then BATHURST after the Royal again Supreme champion. Robyn called him Basil Brush because of his beautiful lush tail. ROBYN brought him up to do a Brisbane Ekka but he developed a splint on his off side front leg half way down big as a egg. So no Ekka. Years before Sgt.Ron Livermore head of the mounted police in Sydney told me to use egg white and lemon juice on a splint .. so I did this and used to measure around the leg to see if it was going and sure enough I completely removed it. GLOWING PLANET stayed in QId took him to Greg & Mike Smith. There his show record continued and the horse he had often to beat for Champion was VIENNA WALTZ. Now Basil used to get very jealous of Vee so we had to put 1 each side of the truck and Basil always had to workout first or he would sulk and botch his workout. Then I let ROBYN take him to Melbourne with VIENNA AFTER DARK. At one show in Victoria Basil beat BB and Robyn said Basil just out worked him that day. He then returned to Tamworth and retired. He was a very quiet horse with a great personality, if you didn't feed him first the look he would give you was lethal. At Brisbane Ekka one year I had a thoroughbred mare in led class she had been Champion Thoroughbred at Toowoomba show. I sold her to a lady who wanted a led horse not a ridden horse. This mare won everywhere for this lady. And I in return bought a bay Galloway mare MERIAH from Margaret Begg and Vince Corvi at the show. This beautiful mare won numerous Galloway classes, then my son played polo on her and earnt a champion polo rug also. Milly was Warwick's first chukka horse and he never failed to score on her, she unfortunately lost the sight in one eye but played on for awhile, retiring to breed 2 colts to RED OAK sold both, then a filly to Getting Closer who Warwick rates as his best horse. Molly retired to breed a foal by VIENNA DECLARATIONS but we found her with a funny swelling around her neck, the vet had never seen anything like it. She did not know if it was a reaction to a bite or what so gave her a antihistamine injection. We found her dead 2 days later. That left us with 3 fillies by VIENNA DECLARATIONS, Jilly and Mezz have both been top polo ponies never had a days sickness in their lives the other sister DIVA got injured in a fence and has done nothing, we did breed a nice colt out of her but he died after weaning.. They are both retired now and Jilly was to be served by our new stallion BIG TREE by SNITZEL out of a OCTAGONAL mare but the drought and hot weather made us to not breed last season. We hope to put all 3 sisters to him this year before they are too old. This is a bloodline we wish to keep.
