24.01.2022 The Tamar river In Hillwood was beautiful and still yesterday morning, producing some sweet reflections. Our neighbour moors his boat right in front of our house, so at least I don't have to travel too far to take some photos!!
22.01.2022 My first offering for quite a while...... we've been renovating and my wife hid my camera!! ;) This is taking social distancing to the extreme! 2.00 am, Monday morning at 'Picnic Rocks', Northeast Tasmania. Not a soul for miles and miles, apart from the guys asleep on the two fishing boats, moored right in front of Eddystone Lighthouse, (the two red lights ruining my shot)!! ;) :) I've had this image in my head for quite a while now, but the weather gods have been letting me... down, when the other conditions have been just right! It was supposed to be clear on this night, but there was a bit of cloud around. It did clear though, allowing me to get a few shots-in. Stay safe everyone. Take care. See more
22.01.2022 Here's another image from my recent Tamar river night-shoot, here in Northern Tasmania. Sharing is great and would be most appreciated.
21.01.2022 I took a trip out to Four Springs Lake near Westbury, which is one of my favourite spots to photograph the setting galactic core. The water can be very still, allowing for some nice reflections in the clear water. There is a light at the end of one of the jetties, which I think, adds a little bit extra to the shots. :)
19.01.2022 Here's another image from my recent 'night-shoot' at Picnic Rocks, in the northeast corner of Tasmania.
17.01.2022 It was 4 o'clock in the morning and I had a difficult choice to make. Do I stay in this nice warm bed, or do I venture outside where it's minus 3, to sit on a tarp on our back paddock and photograph the back of the house!! A no-brainer for most of you I'm sure....... but I've had this shot in my head for quite a while now, only to be let down by the Tassie weather! Looking out of the window, the skies were clear, there was a perfect slither of moon rising in the east to light the scene...... it just had to be done! Hillwood - Tamar River - Northern Tasmania.
15.01.2022 This image is another one from my Bridport shoot on Friday evening (northern Tassie coast). Similar, but with different rocks! ;) This one was taken an hour earlier at 6:10 pm, a little further along the beach at 'Mermaids Pool' (what a lovely name). :) Again, the moon did all of the light-painting work for me.... Sharing is cool and is much appreciated. :)
15.01.2022 The freshest air in the world! (so they say). Cape Grim & the Dough Boys, Woolnorth Station, NW corner of Tasmania. Standing on the cliffs at Cape Grim at 2.00 in the morning was an experience I will never forget and is definitely one of the most exhilarating photo-shoots I’ve been on to-date.... By the way..... the tour vehicle to the left of shot was deliberately included in the frame, I thought it might add some perspective to the image and also bring some welcome recognition to my wonderful hosts. :) Talking of wonderful hosts...... a huge shout-out to Laura and Mark at 'Woolnorth Tours' who were kind enough to take me into the station during the early hours of the morning, thus allowing me to take these shots. (actually, that was mostly Mark)! ;) I also stayed in their lovely adjoining B&B, which is aptly named 'Platypus Waters' and is a terrific place to stay whenever you are visiting this part of Tassie. :) https://www.facebook.com/WoolnorthTours Getting back to the image...... the scene was lit exclusively by the moon, that was rising behind me. This is a six image panorama, shot on the 14/07/2020. Sharing is very much appreciated, should you feel the urge! :) Camera Settings for those interested..... Nikon D800E and a 14-24mm f/2.8 lens. Each image shot in portrait orientation at 14mm. f/2.8 - ISO 2500 - 20 secs each.
13.01.2022 Another morning....... and another early wake up! I decided to go back to Low Head...... because I love Low Head! The tide was quite high (3 metres), so I expected some surf....... but no....... calm as a mill-pond! This quickly became one of those situations where you try to make the most of the 'unexpected' conditions. There was a very thin strip of clear sky sitting just on the horizon. ... I timed this shot so that the sun would rise during the 3 minute exposure. After one minute up it came, but a bit brighter than I expected, so I decided to stop the exposure after two minutes, which as it turned out, was about right! More arse than class!! The sun then vanished up into the cloud. Sharing is appreciated if you feel the inclination. :) Many thanks. #tasmania #LowHead #discovertasmania
13.01.2022 We had a gorgeous sunset on the river last night.... :) Tamar River, Hillwood, Northern Tasmania.
11.01.2022 After using my trusty old Nikon D800E for years, I've been itching to give the new camera (Nikon D850), a bit of a run at the nightsky....... It was quite hazy last night, so not great conditions to be honest...... in fact, 25 minutes after this set was taken the sky was completely clouded over! The camera performed admirably though, and I was very pleased with the results. :) This is a five shot panorama image, taken just before 11.00 pm on the Tamar river in Hillwood, Northern Tasmania....... just up the road from my house in fact. Sharing, as always, is very much appreciated..... should you feel the urge. ;)
09.01.2022 A few 'new ones' from our hometown of Hillwood, in northern Tasmania. I say 'town'....... we have a coffee shop and a strawberry farm...... and that's about it really! The first of these shots is quite similar to one you've already seen, but was taken a few days later on a clearer night. The tide on the Tamar was higher, and the final edit is a bit better too I think. The other two images were taken on the river bank just in front of our place on a hazy evening. The haze ma...kes the stars look bigger and fluffy, (Jupiter almost looks like the moon)! I do love the effect haze can have on astro-shots though, as the galactic core tries to peak through. 09.01.2022 Here's another shot from my recent night-shoot at the Bicheno blowhole on Tassie's east coast....... and this one actually show's the blowhole! :) I flashed my torch on the water as it spurted-up out of the hole during the long exposure needed for the Milky Way. Sharing is appreciated if you feel it's deserved. #tasmania #discovertasmania... #bicheno See more
08.01.2022 Another shot of our beautiful Tamar river, here in Northern Tasmania. The water was quite still at the Deviot sailing club, and the lights from Launceston brightened the sky, to add a bit of extra contrast to that old jetty. :) Milky way 'core rise' was at about 8.00 in the evening, and I shot this at 35mm for a change, just to get a little closer to the action! ;) Sharing is great and would be most appreciated. :)
07.01.2022 Spent an enjoyable Friday winters evening on the beach in Bridport on Tassie's northern coast. It was lovely there....... but I had the place to myself for some reason! (Despite it being named 'Mermaids Pool')!! The moon lit-up the foreground nicely, accentuating those wonderful red rocks.
05.01.2022 Christmas Sunrise, from the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, Nabowla, Northern Tasmania.
01.01.2022 I woke up early again! No real surprise there. :) So I checked the weather and the tides and decided to take a drive out to Low Head, on the north coast of Tasmania..... with a coffee! ;) I used a 10 stop ND filter so that I could employ a really long exposure time of 76 seconds.....
