24.01.2022 HIDDEN ADDICTION "Nobody in my daily life would have ever thought that I was using ice. Nobody," recalls Tahlia Adams. The 29-year-old was a self-described high-functioning addict, despite depending on the drug every single day.... "I was using for about ten years. And I used a lot. I would spend about $1,000 a week on ice," she said. But you wouldn't have known it. During her addiction, Ms Adams held down full-time senior finance jobs, completed a business degree and had a stable home and partner. When the pull of ice increased, Ms Adams took a hit in the morning before work, in the bathroom at lunch, and when she got home in the evening. "People think that an ice user is somebody who's crazy, like the crazy homeless person. Or the people who are stealing cars, or robbing old people," she said. "But it's not like that. 23.01.2022 DANGEROUS HEALTH EFFECTS OF METH CONTAMINATION "The adverse health effects of living within a methamphetamine-contaminated property are consistent. The impacts we are seeing are respiratory, cognitive and behavioural. These effects have included persistent cough, asthma-like symptoms, trouble sleeping, ADHD, decreased memory function, skin rashes, watery eyes, dizziness and blurry visionthe list goes on. Children tend to be more at risk of being affected by meth contaminati...on as they play regularly coming into contact with walls, floors and other surfaces. These effects have been noted in a family who have been studied after unknowingly purchasing and living in a home that was a former meth lab. Dr Jackie Wright is one of the leading environmental risk scientists researching methamphetamine contamination and its risks. She has spent roughly 78 years researching and completed her PhD in the area. She is still continuing her research to gather more evidence. This study was conducted on a Victorian family who purchased a home that was a former meth lab. This study highlighted the importance of testing/screening for meth and decontamination if necessary. The case study outlined when the family purchased the home in October 2013. Previously that same year, the house was owned by an individual who had methamphetamine manufacturing equipment and chemicals in the same property. The police seized the equipment and chemicals, and the owner was arrested. From here, the police followed the standard procedures, notifying the local council, indicating that the home was a former drug lab and posed a potential health risk to anyone living or going inside the home. The council issued a notice to clean up the property; however, the cleanup was not performed. It was not stated why the cleanup was not performed. This was when an innocent family of five purchased the home." 09.01.2022 HOLIDAY HOMES USED AS METH LABS - Families at Risk with Short-Stay Holiday Rentals Used to Cook Methamphetamine Being Left Completely Undetected. - "Let’s get straight into it. A significant number of short-term holiday homes are being used to manufacture Methamphetamine. Yes, you read that correctly, they are being used as meth labs. In May this year, an Airbnb in Adelaide was found to have a meth lab set up by two gentlemen who rented the home for five nights. The police... stumbled across the lab after responding to reports of a fire. The two men had only moved into the house just 24 hours earlier. They set up the meth lab within the property intending to set up the lab, manufacture Methamphetamine, pack up and leave within this short five day period being completely undetected, something that the Adelaide Police said isn’t uncommon in short-term rental properties. Meth labs don’t need to be a chemistry equipment style lab (like this setup); often there is no sign these types of drug labs even existed once they’re dismantled. What is left though is toxic, dangerous chemicals and meth residue for the next unsuspecting renter. This toxic residue can cause symptoms including persistent cough, asthma-like symptoms, trouble sleeping, ADHD, decreased memory function, skin rashes, watery eyes, dizziness and blurry visionthe list goes on. Although this incident is shocking, it is not a one-off occurrence. In December 2015, a similar situation happened in Queensland where police raided an Airbnb and found a meth lab set up for manufacturing meth. Not too long after this, in March 2016, an explosion occurred at the Meriton apartments in Queensland. It was said that a man was manufacturing meth at 5 a.m. in the holiday apartment when he was mixing chemicals that caused the explosion to happen. The detection, management, and cleanup of labs like these in Australia are almost exactly reliant on detection by law enforcement. By their one admission, this meant that 90% to 95% of labs go entirely undetected. While we should be concerned for the labs that will not be detected in the future, there is still an uncountable number of labs that have contaminated properties across Australia where no management or cleanup has occurred. If you’re spending all your money and resources on police to solve the meth problem, you’re not going to solve the meth problem. ... 06.01.2022 METH RESIDUE GUIDELINES Meth residue is toxic contamination that can affect human health dramatically. Specifically, young children and pets. The Australian Government (in its Clandestine Drug Laboratory Remediation Guidelines 2011) has set the Health Investigation Level at 0.5m (micrograms) per 100cm2 for meth on residential surfaces. Australian Guidelines for Meth Residue within a Residential Property is 0.5g/100cm2... Australian Guidelines for Meth Residue within a Commercial/Industrial Property is 10g/100cm2. Exceedance of this Investigation Level (IL) does not necessarily mean a risk exists but indicates the need for further investigation or action such as a NIOSH 9111 test. This guideline is set as a goal to receive a reading of below this national health investigation level (HIL) of 0.5ug/100cm2, the exceedance of this level is considered unacceptable. Help them open up by asking questions like "How are you going?" or "What’s been happening?" Mention specific things that have made you concerned for them, like "You seem less chatty than usual. How are you going?" IF THEY PUSH BACK If they don’t want to talk, don’t criticise them. Tell them you’re still concerned about changes in their behaviour and you care about them. Avoid confrontation. You could say: Please call me if you ever want to chat or Is there someone else you’d rather talk to? 2. LISTEN WITHOUT JUDGEMENT Take what they say seriously and don't interrupt or rush the conversation. Don’t judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them. If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence. Encourage them to explain: "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?" Show that you've listened by repeating back what you’ve heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. 3. ENCOURAGE ACTION Ask: What have you done in the past to manage similar situations? Ask: How would you like me to support you?" Ask: What’s something you can do for yourself right now? Something that’s enjoyable or relaxing? You could say: "When I was going through a difficult time, I tried this... You might find it useful too." If they've been feeling really down for more than 2 weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. You could say, "It might be useful to link in with someone who can support you. I'm happy to assist you to find the right person to talk to. Be positive about the role of professionals in getting through tough times. 4. CHECK IN Pop a reminder in your diary to call them in a couple of weeks. If they're really struggling, follow up with them sooner. You could say: "I've been thinking of you and wanted to know how you've been going since we last chatted." Ask if they've found a better way to manage the situation. If they haven't done anything, don't judge them. They might just need someone to listen to them for the moment. Stay in touch and be there for them. 03.01.2022 HIDDEN ADDICTION "Nobody in my daily life would have ever thought that I was using ice. Nobody," recalls Tahlia Adams. The 29-year-old was a self-described high-functioning addict, despite depending on the drug every single day.... "I was using for about ten years. And I used a lot. I would spend about $1,000 a week on ice," she said. But you wouldn't have known it. During her addiction, Ms Adams held down full-time senior finance jobs, completed a business degree and had a stable home and partner. When the pull of ice increased, Ms Adams took a hit in the morning before work, in the bathroom at lunch, and when she got home in the evening. "People think that an ice user is somebody who's crazy, like the crazy homeless person. Or the people who are stealing cars, or robbing old people," she said. "But it's not like that.
