24.01.2022 Clean up crews led by NSW Maritime are back out on the beaches and bays of NSW after several confirmed sightings of more debris from the APL England shipping co...ntainer incident that occurred in May. NSW Maritime A/ Executive Director Alex Barrell said teams to the north and south of Sydney were responding after members of the public sent through pictures and alerted the hotline late yesterday and this morning. We have multiple teams now cleaning up the shipping container parts, face masks and plastic food containers which have recently washed up at Cronulla and Boat Harbour, and around the Royal National Park at Burning Palms, Garie and Era Beaches, Mr Barrell said. Additionally, there are also confirmed reports of debris coming ashore at Forresters Beach and Maitland Bay on the Central Coast and as far away as Lord Howe Island. Sea conditions along with recent wild weather appear to have stirred up containers on the ocean floor. Skippers should remain vigilant and keep a proper lookout as there is now a greater possibility of encountering container pieces that are submerged, semi-submerged or floating. Modelling is being used to determine likely impacts with increased inspections being carried out as a result. Mr Barrell said while the reports of debris and containers had slowed considerably in recent weeks, clean up resourcing would be maintained as part of the NSW Governments commitment and responsibilities in protecting the coastline. NSW Maritime will continue to maintain the capability to quickly mobilise crews when notified about debris by members of the community, he said. The container ship APL England lost 50 containers 73 kilometres off Sydney in waters around two kilometres deep on May 24. Debris started to wash ashore two days later. Members of the public who find debris or see containers are asked to call 13 12 36 (Option 2) or email [email protected]

20.01.2022 More Kingfish Stocked Into Botany Bay! Approximately 600 kingfish are being stocked into the Botany Bay Recreational Fishing Haven, further enhancing local fi...shing opportunities for these prized sportfish. This latest stocking follows on from the release of 6500 kingies into the bay earlier in the year. Combined, these stocking events are boosting the kingfish population and will provide better fishing. All the kingies stocked so far were bred at DPIs marine hatchery at the Port Stephens Fisheries Institute, with fish in this latest batch averaging about 20-25cm in length. Survival and growth rates of these juveniles should be excellent. The kingfish stockings are being monitored by DPI researchers to assess distribution and survival of the fish in the system. Stay tuned for news on more stockings planned later this summer season. This marine stocking project is another example of your recreational fishing licence fees at work!

17.01.2022 RAP Ramps Up Fish Frame Collections Have you seen our DPI Fisheries Education Officers out and about at your local boat ramp recently? Over the past month, ...DPI staff have been visiting fish cleaning tables at popular local boat ramps during peak times to promote the Research Angler Program and to offer to collect your frames once you have finished cleaning your catch. Once the job of filleting the catch has been completed, most fishos responsibly dispose of the fish frames. But theres another option! Why not donate your frames to the RAP to help provide important biological data about your favourite species and to learn a little more about your catch? If there are no friendly DPI staff around to take the frames off your hands next time youre preparing a few fresh fish for a feed at the local cleaning table, keep an eye out for signage advising the nearest RAP drop-off location or check out https://bit.ly/39iUp0W for a full listing. If youre interested in citizen science, and are lucky enough to catch a legal mulloway, kingfish, snapper, dusky flathead, tailor, black bream, Spanish or spotted mackerel, donate the frame/skeleton at any participating RAP drop-off location. Each frame that you donate to the RAP not only lets you find out about your fish but also gives you a chance to win one of five $50 fishing tackle vouchers in our monthly prize draw! Head to http://bit.ly/2jDuviN for more information on how to get involved. The RAP is yet another great example of your fishing fees at work!

14.01.2022 It wont be the best weekend for boating, with rain on the way - could be time to rethink that trip on the water. A coastal trough is forecast to deepen into a ...low over the weekend and may bring rain, strong winds and rough seas to parts of the coast from late Saturday. Put your safety first. If you do need to head out, make sure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket and Log On and Log Off with Marine Rescue NSW. 06.01.2022 Secret Fishy Business behind closed doors continues, its not looking very promising for Recreational Fishing now, or into the future! Many Stop the Lockout page... followers would have run their eyes across this STL post below from August 13 2020, seeking public transparency, well #NSWDPIFisheries has slowly being updating such, so anyone can have a read and stay informed. RFA has continually persued the LACK of transparency of all #NSWDPIFisheries Committees, maybe its time the Fisheries #MinisterAdamMarshall stepped up to share his and this Governments Vision relating to our NSW Fish and Recreational Fishing for the next 1, 5 and 10 Years, encompassing our States 850,000 recreational fishers and their ~$3.4Billion dollar annual spend. It looks like Dusky Flathead are about to be dramatically reduced by 50% with the recreational daily bag limit going from 10 to 5, possession limit 10 to 5 most likely, and a slot size 36cm to 70cm, with no fish over 70cm. This matter along with others were to be discussed with our Commercial Fishers in August 2020. So what does the Dusky Flathead past and latest science, stock assessments and research say? Are Dusky Flathead stocks in that much trouble in our Shared Coastal fished esturay and ocean waters, our dedicated Recreational Fishing Havens, or both? What are the identified key threats or challenges for Dusky Flathead fish stocks, is it water quality, a productuve annual recruitment, or is it loss of critical flathead habitat, sandy flats, their food web and seagrasses or is it just fishing pressure? What is the past and annual overall Recreational Dusky Flathead resource value adding estimate, which each and every fisho reinvests by choice making to the States Dusky Flathead resources, every time they successfully return/release a large heathly female, or choose not to target that fish, what about adding every other sized flathead to that reinvestment calculation that is let go to live another day, to our states flathead fish stocks? At present the majority of Commercially fished Dusky Flathead are taken in our Coastal Estuaries and Embayments using dedicated flathead, or general purpose haul or set nets. Flathead of all sizes are also taken in the Estuary and Ocean Trawl, Beach Haul and Trap and Line Fisheries. How would the proposed 50% shared reduction or change in the Commercial Fisheries annual landed catch, effort or fishing method be managed? What are the scientifically reseached chances of a/any Flathead's successful survival when released, once its been caught in any commercial fishing method, like haul, set or trawl net, along a logical interaction catch timeline? How will dead discarded Flathead, of any size, be assessed and aquitted against our States Commercial Fisheries annual allocated catch? We all understand the principles of once any fish is dead, its lost forever to every fisher, fishery and the species resource stocks itself overall! And how would our Indigenous Fishers be encouraged to help Dusky Flathead stocks along? At least the Spearfishing Rep got his position "on the record" as not agreeing with the proposed slot limit and maximum size change. Every 'fee paying NSW recreational fisher' is a legitimate customer of NSWDPI Fisheries as the fee they pay is for access to the states publicly owned fish stocks. Maybe its time recreational fishers shared their thoughts/views/comments directly back to the RF Chairman and Committee Members as Official RFNSW Correspondence via its contact email address [email protected] . https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au//rec/licence-fees-at-work/rfnsw

02.01.2022 BOATING SAFETY ALERT Boaters in the Illawarra region have been asked to double-check that their VHF radios are switched off as a matter of urgency. A boat’s rad...io has been left on since early yesterday evening, meaning it has been transmitting non-stop for about the past 18 hours, which is interfering with VHF marine radio transmissions along the coastline from Port Kembla to Ulladulla. This is a public safety issue for boaters on these waters as the interference may mean radio operators at the Marine Rescue Port Kembla, Shoalhaven, Jervis Bay, Sussex Inlet and Ulladulla radio based cannot hear distress calls or other contacts from other boaters. This is particularly problematic if the boat with the radio on is sitting between the radio base and another boat in trouble. Boaters are urged to check their radios as soon as possible.
